Were coming Nov 6 / 10 th this year and were trying to get some golf in, were staying at the Old Course Hotel for 4 nights and were trying to find other things to do.

Visit The British Golf Museum.
Play golf at Crail Golf Club then
go to Anstruther for some fish&chips
at the Fish Bar or in the Spindrift Pub.
Anstruther is 20 minutes from St Andrews.
Watch some Scottish Football.
Buy a kilt
Learn to play the bagpipes.

Having the good fortune of living in Scotland I am always interested in reading views from our valued friends and visitors. Howard makes a good point about not spending a lot of time travelling, can I go further and ask is there a better range of courses, at least mileage and lowest green fee anywhere? Incidentally I notice the Eden at St. Andrews is not mentioned very much, it hosted the junior championship this year and although under the shadow of its immediate neighbour (the old) do people not play it or not enjoy it ? Keep on coming over and enjoying our courses!

Just returned from the Open.
Squeezed in rounds at Crail (just before John Daly) and the Senior Open qualifying courses at Lundin and Ladybank(not a links course but a good test). All of the courses are above all great value for money!!!

Most recent trip (Jun2018) was Peterhead, Cruden Bay (twice), Royal Aberdeen, Panmure, Kingbarns (twice), Crail, (Balcomie and Craighead), St. Andrews Old Course, St. Andrews Jubilee Course, and Carnoustie. My perfect trip would be:
North Berwick (twice)
Gullane (#1 and #2)
Carnoustie (twice)
St. Andrews Old Course (twice)
St. Andrews New Course
St. Andrews Jubilee Course
St. Andrews Castle Course

The courses that I'd most regret not playing are Cruden Bay, Balcomie, and Panmure.

I find the west coast courses overpriced and the northern courses take too much time away from golf just to get there.

My son took me on the golf trip of a lifetime for my 70th birthday. Played 6 courses over the course of 10 days.

Royal Dornoch
Castle Stuart
KingBarnes
The Castle Course
St Andrews (The Old Course)
Carnoustie Golf Links.

Also enjoyed the food, beer and Scottish hospitality. It doesn't get any better than this, especially when you can share the experience with someone you love.

At 64 years old my perfect golf week is staying in the Old Course Hotel for the week and playing The Old Course, The New Course, The Castle Course, Kingsbarns, Crail, Carnoustie and Panmure. Sleeping in the same bed for the week works best for me now. I have done the play/travel/play/travel (8 times) and that was fun for a young man but now I want a full Scottish breakfast, 18 holes of golf, a pint or two at a pub, dinner, and a nightcap before bed. There is so much to enjoy outside of golf in St Andrews! There is nothing like St. Andrews for a week of golf!

Sounds like you've got the setup! I'd recommend the Monifieth Ashludie course if you're looking to branch out around there.

Here's the itinerary I put together for our family group without the aid of any travel services:
Day 1: Arrive in Glasgow and play Turnberry Ailsa in the afternoon
Day 2: Turnberry Ailsa in the morning and Prestwick in the afternoon
Day 3: Royal Troon Championship course and then drive to St. Andrews
Day 4: Carnoustie twice
Day 5: The Castle Course (Because you have to play one other St. Andrews Links course to get on the Old)
Day 6: The Old Course in the morning and Musselburgh Links in the afternoon in the rain with hickory shaft clubs
Two of us walked and carried the bag for all the rounds; OK, I felt it on #17 of the 2nd round at Carnoustie.
We could have played Muirfield also on Day 5 but we didn't want to do 36 the day before the Old Course.
By far the most fun was Musselburgh in the rain with the old clubs. Perfect ending to the trip.

Nice West-to-East action there and yeah Musselburgh with the hickories I can attest to as well.

I've played around forty courses in Scotland. I think my favorite short trip would be Western Gailes, then take the ferry to play Shiskine, ferry to the Mull of Kintyre to play Dunaverty and Machrihanish, then the ferry to Islay to play Machrie. So much incredible golf!!!

Wow! Off the beaten path

Askernish and Colonsay are on the wish list for next trip. REALLY off the path!

I have sort of done that one! One of my trips was: Troon, Irvine, Shiskine (12 holer), Machrihanish and Machrihanish Dunes. Machrihanish (old) might be my favourite in Scotland.

We played all of those courses on our most recent trip in 2012. We only got to play Troon because a member heard us talking about our travels all over Scotland while we where at the pub and invited us to join him! I loved Irvine, too!! In fact, that's the towel I have on my golf bag. The front nine at Machrihanish is the best nine holes in the world. The last two holes there keep it from being the best in the WORLD, in my opinion. Mac Dunes is such a long trek. We were so tired after 36 there.

I’ll be brief:
Of the three trips I’ve done, the last was the most memorable...
Flew into Glasgow, drove to St Andrew’s stayed in Craigmore House.
Day 1 - Carnoustie
Day 2- Old Course (swept the dew!!)
Day 3 - Muirfield and Gullane No. 1
Day 4- North Berwick
Day 5 - Kingsbarns and Dukes at StAndrews was just a toss in)
Day 6 - Royal Dornoch
Day 7- Castle Stuart and Nairn

I liked the Duke's as well. Certainly pleasant and different.
