Winter means southwestern U.S. desert golf is in prime time, and there isn't a more prestigious desert golf destination than Scottsdale, thanks to a huge and diverse collection of upscale resort and daily-fee courses to go along with some of the most luxurious spas, hotels and restaurants in the west.
The greater Phoenix-Scottsdale area is deep enough that you can name your price, but playing the best courses will cost some coin. But we've learned about one intriguing week when you can save money - substantially in some cases - during the coveted peak season: Scottsdale Golf Week Jan. 7-13.
The event is aimed at kicking off the area's true peak season with a bang. Various hotels and courses throughout the valley (even those well beyond Scottsdale city limits) are participating by offering deals. Our own Golf Advisor Getaway is taking place that week and will be all-in on the fun, too.
I scanned Scottsdale Golf Week's extensive list of special offers; here are a few standout deals:
You can play 18 holes of championship golf, lunch included, for $55 at Starfire Golf Club. It's one of the better value courses near the heart of downtown Scottsdale.
Grayhawk Golf Club is on the short list for best semi-private, 36-hole facilities and this "Spend the day with us" package delivers a real member-for-a-day experience complete with food and merchandise credits.
Maricopa's Ak-Chin Southern Dunes is one of the best high-end value facilities and tee times are discounted 25% further during the week. Wickenburg Ranch Golf & Social Club, our top-rated course for conditions in 2017, is also offering 25% off tee times. 36-hole Troon North is offering 20% off your second round.
The Phoenician is eager to show off its new lean-and-mean 18-hole routing, reduced and optimized from the former 27 holes, and is offering an unlimited golf package. (We're sending our own Mike Bailey out there this month to check it out and will report on the changes shortly after).
In addition to saving money, there are various off-course activity specials offered around town. You can browse the full list of deals and events at ScottsdaleGolfWeek.com.
One more thing: don't confuse Scottsdale Golf Week with the Waste Management Phoenix Open week Jan. 28-Feb. 3. That is generally the toughest week of the year to hunt for deals on accommodations and golf, especially when the Super Bowl is in town.

I'm always surprised when Wildfire doesn't get included. Great course at a reasonable price.
Palmer and Faldo both are good tracks in amazing condition every time I've played them.
