Stay & Play For Way Less Than Usual This Summer At Stowe Mountain Lodge

There's an odd mathematical equation that pertains to golf resorts. It's attributed to Mike Keiser, of Bandon Dunes fame.

Don't worry – it's not the least bit technical. You'll actually find it kind of interesting.

Here it is:

1 + 1 = 3

How the heck does this work?

A golf resort with one awesome course is likely to be popular enough. But as fun as it might be to play that one course over and over again on a vacation, most golfers want some variety.

So when a golf resort has two courses, it tends to do as much as three times as well as it would have done with just one course.

Hence, 1 + 1 = 3.

That proposition tends to become even more attractive when a particular resort's two golf courses are very different from one another.

Stowe Mountain Lodge is a prime example of this.

Its two courses – the modern, private (but playable by guests) Stowe Mountain Club and the classic Stowe Country Club – form one of the strongest one-two combinations in the northeast.

They are the centerpiece of one of New England's finest resorts.

More on Stowe Mountain Lodge

Northern Vermont has long been known for world-class skiing, but it continues to emerge as a tremendous summer and autumn destination as well. The mountain scenery, wildlife and outdoor activity possibilities once the snow melts are wonderful.

It's with this in mind that Stowe Mountain Lodge emerged in 2008.

The Lodge comprises more than 300 rooms, suites and residences in an impressive array of layouts that will appeal to couples, families and traveling groups of golfers. The accommodations range from well-appointed guestrooms up to three-bedroom suites; the Front Four residences range up to four bedrooms, and the Lodge's Mountain Cabins even include a five-bedroom house for rent.

These spaces all exemplify the new "Vermont-Alpine" aesthetics of the resort, and lend a cozy feel to a stay at Stowe Mountain Lodge.

Rest is important, because there's plenty of golf to play (especially when you can Save up to 45% on Golf).

The headlining course available to Stowe Mountain Lodge guests is the spectacular Stowe Mountain Club, a Bob Cupp design that opened for play in 2007. A private members' club, this course does make a handful tee times per day available for guests of Stowe Mountain Lodge.

Stowe

Stowe Mountain Club is a true mountain golf experience, where the miles-long views of the mountains surrounding Stowe will etch a place in your memory. As you play the course, be aware that accuracy takes precedence over brute force. That said, there are a few holes where a well-timed heroic shot can pay big dividends. One of these opportunities comes at the par-3 sixth, with an angled, hourglass-shaped green set on the far side of a lake. If the pin is in the back, golfers can take on the fronting bunker and, if successful, they'll watch their ball funnel close to the hole for a potential kick-in birdie.

Check out what Golf Advisor reader ‘Wally537' had to say about his round:

"An absolute spectacular experience. Amazing layout, with even more amazing views. A definite fun and challenging course. IF you check your ego and listen to the yardage book advice and hit the recommended tee shot, even a casual golfer can have a great experience here."

The other course visitors love to play, Stowe Country Club, is more traditional in nature. Originally designed by William Mitchell, Stowe Country Club is less mountainous than its sister course, with a compact routing that makes for a great walk or ride through some sterling Vermont parkland. The Country Club also boasts an expansive practice facility that is perfect for honing any golf game.

Stowe

Golf Advisor subscriber ‘tdonovan777' had the following to say in praise of Stowe Country Club:

"I have been going to Stowe Country Club on an annual weekend getaway with a group of 16 for the past 5+ years. Our group has a range of handicaps between 5 to 20+ and all of us enjoy the layout and challenge of the course. It isn't target golf and it isn't easy. Since we have been playing at Stowe, the course has always been in great condition. With the lack of rain in the Northeast, I expected to see it affect the course this year but it was in great shape. Our contact, Josh and the whole staff is extremely friendly and accommodating. There are spectacular views and the locals/members are kind as well."

These are just a couple of the overwhelmingly positive perspectives on these two courses, courtesy of your fellow Golf Advisor readers.

How To Get To Stowe Mountain Lodge

Northern Vermont has a reputation for being a bit on the remote side, but visitors to the area tend to remark on how much shorter the drive feels, thanks to the gorgeous mountain scenery you'll take in on the way there, no matter which direction you're coming from.

Boston is a three-hour drive from Stowe, with cities like Providence, Hartford and even New York City just a touch farther away. Montréal is just over two hours away. Luckily, Vermont's interstate highways are super-smooth and easy to travel if you're coming by car.

(Insider tip: if you're traveling to Stowe from points south, you'll be peeling off I-89 in the town of Waterbury. Here, you can stop at the Ben & Jerry's ice cream factory, which offers guided tours and one of the brand's famous "scoop shops." It's a must-see stop on your way into or out of town.)

Flying is always an option, too. Vermont's capital-city Burlington International Airport (BTV) provides daily service to and from major cities like Atlanta (ATL), Charlotte (CLT), Chicago-O'Hare (ORD), Detroit (DTW) and Washington, DC (IAD, DCA). Service from the New York-area airports (LGA, JFK, EWR) is also available. Stowe Mountain Lodge is just a simple hour's drive from Burlington's airport.

Why You Should Book Your Visit ASAP

Stowe Mountain Lodge is beautiful, cozy and easy to get to, with two excellent, complimentary golf courses for you and your group to explore and enjoy. Best of all, it's surprisingly affordable, thanks to the resort's "Tee It Up" package, available now.
