There are two golf courses on the property of Putterham in Brookline, both of them historic. Only one of them, though, is open to the public, the municipal Robert T. Lynch Municipal Course at Putterham. The course, which dates back to 1931, actually borders the famous Country Club at Brookline. It plays around 6,400 yards from the tips, but with elevated greens, doglegs and a variety of holes, it challenges players of every level.
Red Tail Golf Club in Devens has soared above the competition to became the best public golf course in Massachusetts, according to Golfweek's 2013 state rankings. Located roughly 45 miles northwest of downtown Boston, Red Tail delivers moments of sublime scenery mixed with the terror of trying to execute a shot over a gaping bunker or deep ravine.
Tom Fazio's Oaks Course doesn't play second fiddle at The International Golf Club & Resort outside Boston
The Oaks golf course has a more scenic and pleasant resort feel of the two designs at The International Golf Club & Resort, located roughly 45 miles west of Boston. Once word gets out that The Oaks is open to all, the Tom Fazio design could make a run at the nearby Red Tail Golf Club as Boston's premier public playground.
The Port Course might be slightly tougher than the Starboard Course at The Captains Golf Course. The two municipal courses owned by the town of Brewster, Mass. in lower Cape Cod feel almost like mirror images. But there's little doubt that the best golf hole on the property is No. 8 on the Port Course. Jason Scott Deegan shows us no. 8 and much more of the Port Course in this photo gallery.
The Starboard Course is the older of the two layouts at The Captains Golf Course, which features 10 holes from Brian Silva's original routing built in 1985 and eight more when Silva returned to design a second layout in 1999. This unique mix of new and old melds seamlessly into one of the best public golf courses on Cape Cod.
