Here are nine reasons Big Cedar Lodge and Top of the Rock, located in the heart of Missouri's Ozarks, make for a golf getaway unlike anywhere else.
This year marks the 30th anniversary of The Oaks course at Tan-Tar-A Resort, making the Bruce Devlin and Robert Von Hagge design one of the most mature golf courses near the Lake of the Ozarks. It's also one of the best. Dense woods, multiple water hazards and a near-complete lack of flat lies demand precision from tee to green. A par-71 layout, it measures only 6,432 yards from the back tees, writes Kiel Christianson, but The Oaks plays longer than it appears.
Dotting the surrounding countryside at Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks are some 15 golf courses and more than three dozen resort properties that offer up some excellent stay-and-play packages. That helps make the Lake of the Ozarks -- the largest man-made lake in the Midwest -– one of America's great, unheralded golf meccas, Kiel Christianson writes.
