Santee, S.C., is a small village of just about 900 residents, but thanks to Lake Marion -- one of America's 50 largest lakes -- Santee is easy to find. And with affordable courses such as Lake Marion Golf Course and Santee National Golf Club, the village is a must-find. Santee's courses, all within a few minutes of each other, are good but won't make any Top 100 rankings, and that's just how its clientele likes it.
Located right in the heart of South Carolina off the main Interstate 95 artery, Santee's golf courses receive a lot of traffic, even if they don't get as much publicity as nearby hotspots Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head and Kiawah Island. You won't find the names of celebrity architects or eye-popping slope ratings splattered on scorecards, but you will see plenty of happy golfers on the area's rolling, sandy-soiled fairways.
Going to Hawaii, Arizona, Palm Springs or South Florida in the winter is, for the most part, a pretty expensive proposition. But those are far from the only options for golfers who dream of teeing it up when much of the country is covered with snow.
There is golf beyond Hilton Head Island, Myrtle Beach and Kiawah Island in South Carolina. Plenty of it, in fact. And while it's not quite on the level as the aforementioned famous destinations, it's a great value and probably worth considering if you're looking for a laid-back buddy or weekend trip. These are the mostly unsung courses of the Gamecock state and well worth exploring.
