Gary Player declined the chance to design San Lameer Country Club in the 1990s, believing there wasn't enough land for a quality course. South African architect Peter Matkovich proved otherwise once a bit more land was acquired, creating a target test of golf in the jungle-covered hills overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Zimbali Country Club was built north of Durbin, South Africa with conservation in mind. Zimbali means "valley of flowers" in the Zulu language. The 6,524-meter golf course was designed by Tom Weiskopf in 1998 to live in harmony with its natural surroundings overlooking the Indian Ocean along the Dolphin Coast.
Perhaps no golf course in the world generates such a difference of opinions as Durban Country Club, a George Waterman design that has hosted 17 South African Opens.
