Enjoyed this course. Great shape, highly recommend it.
Excellent course conditions; big improvement from last time I played...
Played 5/7 and it was shocking the change of condition this Grey Fox has gone through. Tee boxes and fairways near perfect. Greens are in very good condition with the exception of a few spots along the fringes on only a couple of the greens. Bunkers were well cared for but still have a few stones but not anything like I played last time.
Will be interesting to see how the greens hold up in the heat as I think these are still bent grass. The Red Fox has Bermuda. Hopefully they keep up the maintenance and and maybe go Bermuda on the Grey at some point. Highly recommend this course now.
Good value for the money. Nice layout and course in pretty good shape for the weather.
This place is a gem, they over seeded for winter, great staff and well worth the price
Greens were very uneven with many bare spots in the peripheral portions. Beautiful surroundings and great value for Area near Pinehurst. Played another course, more than twice the cost, but only better greens. Fairways were comparable.
This course is challenging and also a lot of fun! Great pace of play and the course was in superb condition. I have now played both grey and red and I liked the red a little better and because the greens were in better shape. Loved every minute!
We played on the Grey course after heavy rain. The design was excellent, but the course was too wet, particularly the greens. I played from the back tees, and as you only got what you hit due to the wet conditions, the course played quite long. This could be an excellent test, if only the underfoot conditions were better, and more people played to allow them to spend more money.
OK for the price
Fairways and rough were in pretty good shape; sand traps were more like a beach. Was no real hitting sand; surfaces were hard and rocky.
Greens were mostly in poor shape; greens on the Red Fox course have just been converted to Bermuda; I would guess that these are to follow next summer.
I like the layout; the mix of holes is good; par 3s and 5s are challenging to a 17 handicap player. Lay up and bring your short game.
Good Course, As Always
Great course for a golfnow.com Hot Deal. Always play it when I'm in Pinehurst. Fairways in great shape. Greens were a bit rough. They need to upgrade to Championship Bermuda like most of the other area courses are doing.
Pro shop guy was great. Very friendly. Recommended restaurants, etc. Even held our tee time while we ran across the street to get a burger before the round. Would recommend this course. In August, its always wide open in the afternoon. Didn't see but a few other golfers on the course (hot day). Grey Fox is on my list each year. Can't afford the big resort but I like the woods, seclusion, elevation changes, etc of foxfire anyway!
WELL MAINTAINED COURSE!
Played the Grey Fox as the Red Fox was closed for maintenance. The course was well maintained! During our round, the flight in front of us was a little bit however was still within the time limit. We finished 18 holes in 3:15 minutes which was still pretty good although we could have been done much sooner. Overall a good round!
Foxfire Golf & Resort – Pinehurst Area Golf at Its Best
Foxfire Golf & Resort just outside Pinehurst, NC exemplifies what Sandhills golf is all about. Tree-lined fairways, large elevation changes and lots of sand is what you’ll find on either of the Gene Hamm designed 18-hole championship courses. Golf Digest has awarded Foxfire Golf and Resort 3.5 stars in their Places to Play Guide.
The fairways on both the Grey Fox and the Red Fox courses follow the natural contours of the land and play through natural rolling hills, sandy soil and multiple lakes. Players must avoid numerous strategically placed bunkers and natural hazards as they make their way up – or many times down - to large, elevated greens.
Although it doesn’t require you to carry a pond or creek off the tee, water plays an important part in Number 2 being handicapped the toughest hole on the course. You’ll really need to favor the right side of the fairway to avoid the water that comes into the middle of the fairway from the lake on the left. From there, you’re looking at a long, uphill approach shot to a large green with a false front that is well guarded by bunkers. It plays much longer than the stated yardage on the card – (390 yards/White Tees).
The par 5, number 9 is a 490-yard par 5 that can be reached in two if you can keep it on the right side of the fairway, past the dogleg. A small pond guards the layup landing area on the left side and you’ll need to fly your approach shot onto the green as it is surrounded by sand on all four sides. The green is relatively flat and good scores can be made here.
Foxfire has some incredible membership opportunities that give members access to both of their 36-hole Pinehurst facilities – Foxfire and The Country Club of Whispering Pines. As a member, you’ll receive unlimited golf, full access to the practice facilities including unlimited range balls and full access to other Brown Golf-managed facilities in NC, SC, FL and PA. All for one low, monthly rate.
Foxfire and Whispering Pines also offer stay and play packages that include accommodations, golf and meals.
Nice course, good value
Course was in very good shape for this time of year. Greens were especially nice. Interesting layout. Very enjoyable to play.
Needs new staff
Showed for a 12:54 tee time, rolled up to the first tee and saw THREE groups in line yet to tee off. I tried to reason with the lady in the pro shop to let us tee off on the other course which was just finishing off a shotgun start, she rudely stated that we can't do it, even though no one had teed off the first hole for 30 min. She then stated that she can't be a starter and run the pro shop at the same time, so she just told us to find an empty hole and start there. that took us 20 min, had to rush to start on he 16th hole to sandwich ourselves in between two groups. Very frustrating day, this place is going downhill fast, needs new management!
