Nice course
The day we played it was in the 40's and the wind started up by the 8th hole. The back 9 it was tough with the 17 mile an hour winds, and cold weather. Going this Thursday again, suppose to be calmer and in the low 50's.
Favorite course
The course is newly reopened after the greens had a meltdown earlier this year. They had two temporary greens on 4&5 but I imagine they won't remain that way as soon as next week possibly. One of my favorite courses to play in WNC. You can usually get it on GolfNow for a cheap price which makes it even better.
Best Bang for the Buck
GN red hot special $10 plus small fee. Lowest price and best golf I have ever had!!!
Great Course, Great Views, Just Beautiful
The course was in great shape and we had little to no pressure. The back 9 had great views of Lake James and the Mountains, just a beautiful course with nice folks running it. I can't wait to play there again.
Marion Lake Club
Very friendly staff, great views. They are replacing all 18 greens gonna be closed for about 3 months, but when they are complete this will be a fun little golf course.
Will review again
Marion Lake Club is a nice track, a bit off the beaten path. My son and I drove the hour and ten minutes because I kept seeing the tee times under the "Hot Deals" with golfnow.com. and a golfer I know said the course was a decent destination. In all fairness to the staff...they are super friendly, by the way, the fairways and tee boxes were all in pretty good shape. They had a catastrophic chemical event earlier this year with their greens and they were decimated...auto-two-putt became the rule of the day. Greg said they were closing the course for the next three months to re-seed and get the greens back into shape. (Wish I'd known that before making the drive.) Other than a closed snack bar and the horrible condition of the greens, we had a pleasant day of it. This course struck me as a "locals favorite" and two groups of ladies playing made it feel like they were "members"...and "special"...snotty old wenches playing (thankfully) only nine holes. We will definitely make a return trip in the fall when the greens are back. I think the course would be worth the drive when it's in top notch condition. Nice views of the mountains and Lake Nebo made for some good scenery. Good looking little club house will have decent menu and good beers when they open back up.
Worst Greens Ever
The greens at this course were practically non-existent, just bits of grass among dirt. Nobody in the pro shop informed us before the round, nor is there anything in the GolfNow listing about the poor conditions. Would not return.
Great views of Lake James
The course was in good shape except for the greens. They were treated with a chemical that killed some of them off. Other than that, a fun course.
Marion Lake
For $11 to play 18 i thought was a steal. The course is a fun, challenging course. Whenever we arrived we saw the fairways and tee boxes in pristine condition. But once we got to the #1 green it was a joke. This course needs to shut down for a month to redo every green on the course. I have never seen such poor management on a course like this. I shoot in the mid 70s and i shot in the low 80s because the greens were HORRIBLE!!!!! whenever it takes you 3 putts to putt the ball 2-4 feet its time to pick the ball up and go home. Worst conditions ive ever played on. What ticks me off is they need to tell golfnow and the customers before paying or playing about the conditions. We would have went somewhere else. You definitely need to ask the condition of the greens before you even attempt to play here. It will take a few weeks to bring the greens back so beware!!
Horrible Green Conditions
We've played at Marion Lake numerous times in the past and have always enjoyed the facility. Not this time. Greens were in horrible condition. I was disappointed and embarrassed by the condition they were in. . I took a friend along to enjoy the course for the first time - what a waste of my travel time and even the decent rate from GolfNow. Until greens are in better condition I cannot recommend.
Mr kong
Horrible greens nooooooo grass all crack dirts only
Great Course
Great Course that is fun and challenging to play with steep terrain on some holes. The greens are currently in terrible shape but its apparent that they are working to bring them back.
Had a wonderful time
Friendly staff and beautiful scenery, will play here again
Great
Great course for the money. Greens are in great shape the staff is very friendly and treats everyone the same. Great views on back 9.
This course has great view.
Course has nice green but fairway need to be better. Front 9 hole is not bad but back 9 hole is too close to each other..
Greens were like a pool table Great Shape
Putted and rolled true fairways and rough were great for April
Great day
Diamond by the lake
This is a challenging course with beautiful views.
Late Winter Review
This day was set for course maintenance for all greens. Heavy sand on front nine greens and work being done on back 9. This required playing front 9 two times. To be expected, fairways were recovering from winter conditions making fairway shots like hitting off the sidewalk. Hole placement on greens was mostly center of green making for better putting but still difficult with sand.
Don't waste your time! Go somewhere else!
This has got to be the absolute worst golf course I have ever played in my 24 years of golfing. The fairways are Bermuda, but very thin and lies were horrible. I always play as it lies, and I felt like I was plowing the garden all day.
The layout of the course is very confusing for the first time player: lack of signage as to where some of the next holes are, some backtracking from green to next tee box (green at 2 to tee at 3, where you have to cross train tracks, and green at 5 to tee at 6) which can lead to some serous congestion, and a shared fairway for holes 14 and 15. And because #6 isn't well defined, I pulled my tee shot over into #5 fairway and a group behind us had the audacity to pick my ball up and put it in their pocket. When I confronted them, they said they never saw my ball.
Oh, and the kicker is we had to wait for about 5 minutes for a train to pass through after hole #7 before we could get to #8 tee, another example of not a well planned layout. Also, you have to cross the road to get to the back nine, and cars come flying over the hill so don't dilly dally around when crossing!
The only good thing I can say about this course is the view from the green at #17. You're looking over Lake James at the Linville Gorge Wilderness Area, one of the prettiest backdrops to a hole I've ever seen. Too bad it was wasted on such a horrible course. Even though I managed to beat it around for a 75, I won't ever go back and play this course even if they let me play for free.
