Very solid Course
Greens 4.5 bermuda type, been dyed/painted since likely had previous freeze in this area
Fairways 4.0 only # 10 had some issues, could play the ball down.
Bunkers/traps 4.5 very well maintained and good consistency
Layout 4.0 good variant of holes, with uniqueness of most holes. Nice elevation changes, but not too harsh.
Cart Paths 2.5 Like most asphalt paths in this region, get bumpy with time, especially with roots beneath the paths.
Clubhouse 3.75 Very nice staff, Appears to have basic snacks, and not meal type food.
A gem
This time of year our Western NC courses normally show their wear and tear. Fairways are typically weedy and thin, and greens are questionable. Cleghorn couldn't have been more different! The fairways were plush Bermuda, but they weren't mud bogs. And the greens were undulating, true, quick, and consistently maintained. I don't recall seeing a spot of burned out turf or ratty green anywhere.
The layout is up and down (as advertised) - you won't get many flat shots. But most lies were level, allowing you plenty of opportunity to get a good swing on the ball. Tee shots are fair - there is room to spray the ball a bit. But the rough and woods are thick. Anything far offline is probably going to be lost. The greens offered many tiers with some tough pin positions possible (we saw some). We had to play for the ball to roll out a little more on the greens than is normal at some of our other area courses, but that added to the challenge. The overall setting is a beautiful old plantation, and it offers some pretty stunning views.
We'll be back!
Mountain Golf at it's Best
I have been playing this course for ten years or so,(except when it was closed for two years pending the outcome of a legal dispute).I took my golf buddies from the UK here twice in the last couple of weeks and they loved it. A beautiful, testing course which requires staying in the short grass or pay the price. The course is in excellent condition thanks to a great course superintendent and his team. The greens are the best that I have played on this year. Very friendly staff. I drive 33 miles down the mountain to play here. The green fees will not break the bank either..
Favorite
This is my favorite course around here. Greens are excellent and putt true. Layout is great as you can use all your clubs. Staff is awesome and friendly. Price is definitely fair and I always have a great time playing here. Course has always been in great shape. Will come back many times I’m sure!
Great place to play
Fast greens, nice fairways, nice layout. I play a lot of course’s in the upstate SC Greenville, Greenwood,Travelers Rest, Spartanburg, Simpsonville, & Newberry . This is the best of all the places I play and only 52 minutes from woodruff sc & 35 minutes from Greenville . You can also use your fairway woods MORE THAN 1 time
Fun course....wish I played better!
Course is in good shape greens are excellent....some of the sand traps are bad....typical for a mountain course. Fun place to play.....great stone work with plenty of great views.
Good short track
Nice shape, mtn golf. Fun layout. Good grill area.
I'll be back
Haven't played course in years but the greens are still in great shape and fast. Fairways are well manicured. Course is hilly so shot placement is vital on some holes. Love the scenery.
Great course to learn on
Best course in the area to learn on. Not because it's easy (it's definitely not) but because the rangers never come up and tell you to speed up your game. I've played several other courses in the area and believe me, I'm trying to play the best I can but when the ball goes wonkers, it slows you down. Take plenty of balls as there are many holes where you either have a great shot or the ball is forever lost in the woods or water!
Great Golf Course
Cleghorn was an interesting course that was in great condition. I booked a Golfnow Hot Deal for a buddies trip to the area, and we enjoyed playing here. The greens were firm and recently verticut but rolled good. Fairways were almost perfect and rough was all cut to a uniform depth. The course has numerous doglegs and a lot of undulation. Beautiful course.
In Good Shape
I try getting out to Cleghorn a couple times a year. In the past the course conditions have been hit and miss. However, the newest owners are doing a great job of keeping it in good shape. There were some fairways with a few bare spote, but overall the fairways were full and cut, and the tees were in good shape. Like most courses in the area, the bermuda in the rough is really thick this time of year. The greens had been punched about 3 weeks ago, and werent quiet healed all the way up-probably at about 80 percent-but they rolled pretty good and at a nice pace. The layout is awesome, thats never been a problem. So if you get a chance go give it a play.
Beautiful but very challenging course.
Course is in great shape except for greens still healing from being punched. Tough course with dramatic and picturesque elevation changes.
Hot deal, warm greens
I got a Hot Deal for $12 to play this course, and was excited due to having played the course many times. Stopped in to play on the way to Lake Lure for the weekend. The staff were very friendly and the clubhouse had been updated since my last visit. He tee boxes and fairways were great, just as I remembered. The surprise came when I got to the first green. It appeared that the greens had been punch recently. The greens had been sanded, and the holes had filled in pretty well. I found that the greens still putted well and my ball was not really affected., although they were a bit slower. I didn’t score well, but was no fault of the course. Can’t wait to go back.
