Revival Golf Course at the Crescent

Clubhouse and grounds staff are always excellent. Newer carts are in good shape as well. Tee to green, the course is in excellent condition. Tees and fairways have plenty of grass on them, and give nice lies. Bunkers are kept up well and have good amounts of sand in them. The bent grass greens are showing considerable signs of stress from the summer heat. There were a few on the front nine, along with #16 that have significant issues. They were syringing greens during my round, doing their best to keep them alive, so the desire is there, but it's just so hard to keep bent alive in this climate. I would give the greens a chance to recover before playing here again.

Revival Golf Course at the Crescent

Played Revival for the third time this year. The staff is great, and the club has recently updated their cart fleet. The course conditions from tee to the green were by and large great. Tee boxes and fairways are in great shape. The rough is lush, but fair. You can play out of it, but it will test you. Most of the greens are fine, but there are some that are experiencing issues. The 5th hole had a temp green, as the regular one had been completely resodded. The recently reclaimed front of the 3rd green is showing signs of stress again, unfortunately. A couple of others also showed signs of stress from the summer heat.
If you haven't played here recently, they have converted #4 to a par 5, and #6 to a par 4, flipping the par on those two holes.

golf play

Played this course several years ago when it was in need of major repair. What a difference it is now. Greens are in great shape, fairways are kept mowed. Several areas are still being worked on and will be part of the course soon. Course is kept clean. short rough is maintained. Sticks are kept picked up. Was a great experience.

The Revival At The Crescent Update

Wanted to give an update on Crescent, as it's been over a year since the last review was posted. The club has new ownership and a new name in 2017. It is officially called The Revival At The Crescent. The new ownership has put a lot of resources into bringing the course back from the edge of death. I found all but one tee box in great shape. They were as lush as any I've seen this summer. The fairways as well, save the 6th, have finally recovered from the winter kill of '15. The weather has allowed the bermuda to thrive. The greens have never really been an issue at Crescent, other than the 3rd, and that is still the case. The greens were spongy underfoot and rolled fairly true. There were a few unrepaired ball marks, but nothing too bad. The club has done a lot of work on all green side bunkers. They have redone the drainage in the bunkers and added new sand to them. They play as bunkers should now as opposed to the rock hard dirt that they were before. It appears as if they are letting several fairway bunkers that don't really come into play transition into grass bunkers. There are new gas carts with usb charging ports. Additionally, there were coolers of cold water at several spots around the course, a welcome addition on a hot day. Sprinklers had distances on them and their was new signage everywhere.
The club does still has work to do. The front half of the 3rd green has been transitioned back into fairway, leaving a really small target. There is also a decent size portion that is under repair. It sits so far back in a wooded area, that I don't see any way they can get air circulation back there other than bringing in fans. The 5th tee, 5th green and 6th fairway also need work. They sit down in a low area and don't get much airflow, either. The tee had more grass on it than in years past, but still had some bare spots. The green had a few bare spots that need to fill in. The 6th fairway also has thin/bare spots throughout the landing area and isn't nearly as lush as the other fairways on the course. (I probably shouldn't complain, as I managed to eagle the hole!) The club never had complete cart paths, and while it wasn't a problem 15 years ago, the lack of maintenance of the dirt cart paths over the years has made them almost impassible. Driving on the grass is much easier. The edges of bunkers need to be worked on as well. Areas of the course that aren't directly in the line of play, but could see an errant shot are the last piece of the course to come back.
All in all, the club has made great strides to make the course playable again. Continued efforts in that same vein will bring it close to the condition it was in during the mid-'00s. Weekday rates range from $34-$22, and the course is well worth that at this point.

Golf Buddy

Nice course. A bit rough but improments are being made.
We use a golf buddy. When u roll up on 9 the GB will say it's hole 18. Go with this yardage. An viceversa when u come up on 18 and the GF says is hole 9. We thought 9 may use to have been 18 and vice versa. But the employee said that it had not. Not sure why it's like that.
But we liked the course ok an would return again.

Nice course. The rough loves to collect balls.

The rough is deep Bermuda that makes it difficult to find wayward balls even when you think you see where it went. But you can usually find it. Point is to keep your eye on where it goes or you will need luck on your side finding it. Course is laid out pretty well and the area is relaxing. A couple holes need work (fairway grass missing and greens with bare areas).

The staff went above and beyond for me and my experience!

This was my first time playing the course, and I didn't happen to have my golf clubs with me. I needed left handed golf clubs and the pro shop was currently out of left handed sets. So the man running the front desk went above and beyond for me, he called up someone who lived on the golf course and found a way to get me a set of clubs. He went and picked them up personally and delivered them to me. My group still got to our tee time on time. We had an wonderful time. The course was filled with challenging holes within its unique layout. We had a wonderful time! Looking forward to going back!

The course has an excellent layout!

Fairways are looking great, some areas are still bare from previous year winter kill but are starting to come back...with more watering they would fill in, tee boxes need a lot of water, they are hard to get tees in the ground, greens roll smooth and are quick but have some bare and bad spots starting, inside staff are very friendly, just needing watering at night to soften up greens and tees and this could be the best course to play within 50 miles of Salisbury.....

A Hidden Jewel

Cresent, is a hidden jewel. I love the layout. The treelined fairways remind of of old school golf. The staff is friendly and always courteous. This golf course demands every shot in the bag. My only regret is the condition of the fairway bunkers. Can't beat it for pace of play the greens roll true and you have to bring your A game.

This course has a great layout with some challenging holes.

The Greens are perfect and most of the fairways are in great shape. The tee boxes, areas around the Greens and the bunkers needs improvement, but overall the course is in good shape. We traveled 35 minutes to play this course and we had a great time. Will definitely play this course again.

Just a little more work

Easily the most fun layout I have come across down in NC. Staff in the shop were extremely nice. Greens were a touch slow, but true to the putt. Fairways as stated by a few others could use some more time, but you can tell they are trying to get them in and you can tell it is starting to come around. I got a great deal to play there and I can't wait to go back. A really fun layout and great people.

Need Water?

Very poor conditions. Tee boxes were rock hard and mostly thick grass and or just dirt patches. Most fairways were either large areas of dirt or ground under repair. Even a few greens had bare spots and seemed like nobody has mowed or manicured in quite awhile. I feel bad for the people we were paired with that paid $36. Used to like this course but seems quality has gone down while price has gone up. Never again even at the $11 rate.

Course conditions continues to improve every day. It's not perfect but much improved over past. Excellent layout. Working hard to regain trust of players with limited resources. Focusing on greens first which is evident. Water and summer heat are improving fairways daily. Out of play natural areas being established. This is a championship golf course layout in the City. Increased play will ensure continued improvement. Rates very cheap for this tract. A great value course. Play it and see for yourself.

GREAT LAYOUT & FRIENDLY STAFF

GREENS ARE VERY GOOD. MOST FAIRWAYS HAVE GOOD GRASS IN MOST "LANDING " AREAS. THE ROUGH IS "ROUGH". COULD BE DIRT,CLOVER OR WEEDS--THUS THE DEFINITION OF ROUGH. MOST FAIRWAY BUNKERS NEED A LOT OF WORK WHICH WE PLAYED AS GROUND UNDER REPAIR. GREENSIDE TRAPS WERE RED DIRT AND A LITTLE HARD, BUT NOT THE WORST I'VE PLAYED. YOU CAN TELL THEY ARE DOING SOME WORK TO IMPROVE CONDITIONS. THE BIGGEST GRIPE WE HAD WAS THERE WAS NO WATER COOLERS ON THE COURSE. I MENTIONED IT TO THE STAFF AND HE SAID THEY HAVE NO PROBLEM PLAYERS BRINGING A COOLER WITH WATER. WILL DEFINETELY GO BACK AGAIN.

Great greens

Haven't played this course in several years. Always enjoyed playing there but had heard that the course was in terrible shape until recently.

Good news : The greens were great. Best greens I've played this year (and I've played some high end courses).

Bad news : Fairways and rough were not in very good shape and there were weeds growing (rather high) everywhere.Bunkers are orange dirt. Needs real sand.

I hope that the new ownership has the means to bring this course back.

Rebirth at Crescent?

If you scroll down you will see my review from approximately 1 year ago. At that time, I'd pretty much left Crescent for dead. Since that time ownership has changed, and based on their reply to my review, and other more recent reviews. I decided to venture back out to the course to see for myself. The first good sign was simply the fact that there were cars in the parking lot. The last few times I'd played Crescent, I'd virtually had the course to myself. The clubhouse has also been cleaned of much of the clutter that inhabited it. The staff was friendly and attentive. As far as the course goes, improvements have definitely been made, but there is still much work to do to restore Crescent to its condition of 8-10 years ago. The greens are in excellent shape, as evidenced by my 5 straight one putts to finish the round. The 3rd green has even been reopened, although they have abandoned the original front quarter of it. That makes the hardest hole on the course that much more difficult. THe greens were also largely free of unrepaired ball marks, which also made them roll smoother. Hopefully the condition of the greens are an indication of things to come for the rest of the course, as it needs it. The fairways still haven't recovered from the winter kill of 2015. The fairways on the back side are in better shape than the fairways on the front, but they all need a good deal of work. Weeds need to be eradicated, more seed needs to be planted, and irrigation applied. The teeboxes also need a great deal of attention. None of the ones I've played had been mowed in a while, and weeds had overrun most of them. The same goes for the rough. I was in two bunkers, neither of which had any appreciable amount of sand in them. All of them need extensive amounts of maintenance. The course also needs to take care of the little things such as bunker rakes, ball washers, sprinkler distances, etc. My review may seem overly negative, but the course had fallen so far that there is a lot to fix. I am highly encouraged by what I've seen to this point on the greens. Hopefully the new ownership will continue to devote time and resources to bettering the rest of the course.
