Very mixed feelings
First off, this is a beautiful mountain course. The staff are pleasant and casual. The setting alone makes this course worth playing. Many narrow fairways make for a challenging course, and none of the Par 3's are simple.
The day we played the fairways were in great shape, and the greens were good although very, very hard and fast. The tee boxes were often more sand than grass though with a liberal sprinkling of grass seeds.
It was also sad to see poor etiquette on such a nice course; very few people seemed to be raking or fixing their divots.
Lastly, it would be nice to see some beverage service here. The club-house pub is often very crowded as it serves the whole Sapphire Valley development (which is huge) so it would be nice to be able to order a beer without all the hassle of waiting up there.
As expected
Course layout and staff attitude are great. Conditions and maintenance are not. Tee boxes and bunkers are terrible but greens are playable. Maybe summer will be better?
Go here if you want interesting layout and cool Mountain Views. Don’t expect much more.
The leaves on the fairways was an issue. The greens were very slow.

Course was in decent shape, greens could have been better.
RO
Staff was great, course condition could be better.
Great layout, but the conditions were a bit disappointing.
Traps are basically unplayable, fairway grass waning unacceptably, but it is a fun course with great potential. Put some money back into the course...please.
Fun & frustrating
A true mountain course so for us FL flatlanders it can be frustrating selecting just a club to hit….. up hill, down hill, side hill, etc. Have played here many times and so we eliminate the frustrating by not keeping a cumulative score. We even switch which tees to play per hole. We just enjoy the scenery and the challenge. Have fun. FYI, conditions fluctuate because of the challenges of maintaining a mountain course AND inconsiderate players who don’t fill their divots w/provided sand.
Could be better
Full disclosure. I love this course, I grew up on this course, and I learned to play golf on this course. My sentimentality is why I always recommend it. The course layout and the mountains and the views are fantastic. And it’s the only public course in a 25 mile radius.
With that said, the staff was friendly, the carts were nice, and fairways were in decent shape. The greens were 40$ green fee worthy, not 95$. The tee boxes were absolutely thrashed. The sand traps were water logged.
I’ve played worse for sure, a lot worse, but not at that price point. It’s just not playing like a 90-100$ course, it’s playing like a 45-50$ course.
I’ll be back but it’s turning into Stockholm Syndrome.
RIP Sapphire Mountain Golf Course.
Stay away
Do not waste your money….that is what I told my friends. A basic 35$ golf course charging way to much due to the area!
This course was terrible
I would never play this course again. The only good thing about this course was the friendly staff. But otherwise it was bad. The conditions were terrible I don’t think they own a lawn mower. The fairways grass is super long and the pin locations are penalizing. This course if in good shape could be really good.
better than expected
cart path only day I played. greens were pressed and mowed. speed was OK.. fairways were rolling. rough could be punishing. saw 5 deer. condition was not as good as it could be but greens and fairways were very playable. would play again.
Better than it’s reputation
Played the course on August 24, 2023. It’s much better than it’s reputation. The greens are in excellent shape. The fairways are neatly cut. The tee boxes well prepared. The one thing to mention is that all sand traps are not attended to. When checking in, I was told that the local rule is a free drop when you end up in a trap. Obviously not a great solution. But other than that, it’s a great course. Gorgeous views, challenging holes that are all different. An incredible shot onto an island green. Worth the money. Despite the flaw with the traps.
