Renovation is 5 Star!
I've played this course for over 20 years, it is the best it has ever been! Today was the first day since the renovation and it was awesome! Cosmetically the greens still has some growing in to do, along with some fairways and waste areas but it was amazing! Get out out and play it!!
Construction
Golf Now didn’t tell me this was under construction - course will be amazing once greens are finished. Stopped playing after the first hole when I realized that there were no greens… I’ll come back in 6 months to check this out.
Staff is friendly -
Great Layout
Classic Donald Ross layout without the resort cost. New owners investing over a million in renovations so there is some construction on the course with modifications to first two holes. Can't wait to return when its all finished.
A True Delight
I was pleasantly surprised to find this Donald Ross gem. The layout is now one of my favorites. With the expected improvements coming to Southern Pines this is certainly a bucket list course in the Sand Hills. The greens can be a bit challenging if you are not below the hole. The fairways were in nice shape for November golf .
Really great greens
This golf course has really good putting greens. Bermuda tiff and large undulated surfaces. This course is worth playing just for the putting greens alone.
Speed of Play
After the 1st hole had to wait for every shot. As we finished the round we noticed there were two foursomes backed up on the 2nd hole. Is this a case of overbooking golf packages?
Half way house only took cash.
Played here with my dad twice in the last 2 weeks. Compared to the other Ross courses in the immediate area, for the money, Southern Pines is hard to beat. Sure, it's not meticulously maintained like No.2 or No. 4 but it doesn't cost anywhere near those either. It's in better than good-enough condition. We were asked to keep carts off fairways as much as we could, as they just overseeded for the winter, and the fairways had filled in significantly since our previous round 2 weeks earlier. The Bent greens were all in excellent shape and the layout is, IMO, as good as any Ross course I've played. If you're in the area and have any interest in non-resort courses, play here. The mgt team behind Pine Needles and Mid Pines just bought the course, so it won't be this much of a screaming value for long.
Did They Lose Their Maintenance Budget?
It's hard to really pan a golf course - from staff friendliness to the course conditions to the all-around "experience". But this one really failed on almost all counts. For a course with some renown, I wonder if they are in financial trouble. I've played munis which look like Augusta compared to this course. They didn't want us driving on the fairways to "protect them". Not sure why you protect mud with some thin grass. Bunkers looked overgrown and had no care shown to them. (I hit out of plain dirt on two). The fairways were possibly the worst I've ever played on. The greens were lush, but trying to hold on to bentgrass in the area without the budget to maintain, meant putting on molasses. Honestly, they were the "best part" but that's not saying much. The staff friendliness was lacking and it's almost as if they didn't want us there. (with exception of very friendly help at the small turn house). It really was sad, as we had high hopes for the Donald Ross course but save your money. By contrast, we played the next day at nearby Longleaf which was awesome: friendly and professional staff, well-maintained course (with fantastic greens and fairways), and a great all-around experience. Wished we had simply played there twice!
Course is in bad shape right now
This is a course I love and have played multiple times. I live in the area and is one of my favorites to recommend to people. Especially since it is usually one of the better bargains in the area. However, it is in rough shape. The greens are dying and have lots of bare spots along with the fairways. Putting is almost impossible to keep a ball on line. I would wait till later in the winter for the bent grass to come back to life to play this course.
Great Day to Play
Awesome Labor Day to play, golf course was in very good shape. Tee time after tee time and still played in under 4 hours. Layout of this course is very good, challenging but fair.
Great Donald Ross Course
Excellent golf course. Great layout. Excellent greens. Very challenging. If you like a Ross course, this is a classic. Very nice people. Looks like the new owners are starting improvements. Already a great place. Will be interesting to see the progress.
