The hidden jewel
I played this course last year in the Spring and just yesterday. The transformation that was starting last year has accelerated The course's conditions will be peaking in a week or two. The owner is sinking money into the course and you can tell. There are several blind shots that requires thinking about what to hit and sometimes hitting less than the driver on several of the par fours. The greens are beautiful and can get quite fast. Well placed approach shots and pitches are a requirement to keeping the score down. Many long shots to the green end up with a pitch from the bottom of the hill. Challenging and fair.
Awesome course
This course was very challenging, although from what I'm told it is much easier now since they have taken out some trees. Fairly long course and in great shape for the time of year.
Excellent outing!
This was my second opportunity to enjoy a fantastic round of golf. The course is equally as beautiful as it is challenging. Staff is always very welcoming and also very informative. Looking forward to my next visit already! GOLO or Go Home!
Course is in great shape
Haven't been there for a couple of years. Fantastic transformation with the shape the course is in. Fairways, greens, emenities were all very nice. Well worth the price to play!!
Not for beginners
Ever have one of those days when you should have stayed home to do the honey do list instead of golf? Well I did here. Everything else was great but my game that day. I was horrendous. Could have used a little help, but you don't get any on this course. If it's not on the fairway that ball is gone. Course was in good shape and I will go back there another day and give it another shot.
tight squeeze
18 holes of golf, fit into a 16 hole sight, The course winds along the side of hills, with a creek/stream following with you for most holes. An good course to play forward on your first visit, (shot makers) I played with some senior regulars who showed me the way, I can't imagine how many balls would have gone away, had I play it back. Greens were just punched, but they did it with play in mind, used some kind of sand injection that kept them playable. They were fast and undulated, good fun.
Fun course in good condition. I enjoy this place.
I've played here 3 or 4 times now, and I've got to say this is one of my favorite courses in the area. It has a great mix of holes and challenges, it's in great shape even though we've been in such a drought, and it's got some great views, too... plus, the price is very competitive. It takes me 25 minutes to drive there, and it is well worth the drive.
Accuracy really pays off here
Course in the best shape in years - better than most courses within 25 miles. Greens roll extremely well yet many have tiers and lots of subtle breaks. Hit to the wrong part of the green and you'll likely 3 putt. Very friendly staff. Great layout except for #1 hole, which the owner intends to change back to the original design. While fairways are generous, if you miss them, there will be a price to pay. Miss the green to the wrong side and you will also loose a stroke recovering.
A phoenix has risen.
It has been several years since I played River Oaks (after playing its previous incarnations for a decade and a half). The last time that I was on this course, it was in horrible condition.
Well, the owner has spent a considerable amount of money and time to refurbish the course. What a success -- this course has risen like a phoenix from the ashes. The course was in very good shape, particularly compared to many local courses in the Charlotte to Hickory region. Greens -- very good and true, fairly fast, and extremely consistent (a couple with minor issues, but nothing that affects play). Fairways -- very good. Tee boxes -- good, some a little sparse, but they are juggling the tees to promote growth. Bunkers -- okay, maybe a little inconsistent (some compacted, and needing more sand). Clubhouse -- very nice, such an improvement on the previous trailer. Restaurant/bar -- again, very nice. Practice facilities -- a work in progress. Driving range provides an aerobic workout just to access it -- could use a way to drive down closer to it. Practice green is very good, and representative of the greens on the course.
This layout has always been quite challenging, particularly with elevation changes, some moguls, strategically placed bunkers, and a few blind shots. A long hitter can overpower some of the course by flying some of the trouble spots, while the normal golfer has to be more strategic. In some respects, it feels like a mountain course.
This course is definitely worth the drive to get to it (about 45 min. from Huntersville/Cornelius). The owner is really to be commended -- his labor of love has made this a course that is once again a great place and great value to play. I highly recommend that you give this course a try.
Great Course.. Be Careful if it Rains
Very challenging and enjoyable course to play. If riding in a cart and the weather is a little wet, be very careful on the hills. No. 10 is a very steep down hill slope, making it very difficult to control the cart under wet conditions. Be aware and check the weather before playing.
Staff very friendly, and the course is in very good condition.
Good course at a very reasonable price
Last played at the course over 3 years ago when it was declining - it is now a very well maintained course (greens were excellent) in a very pleasant place to play - the course rewards good shots without penalizing you too much for poor ones - will be back there soon!
River Oaks
Course in great condition. Have made a lot of improvements since I last played the course. Will be back again soon. You won't be disappointed.
Great Value
Tony Henderson has a great piece of property for a golf course. Rolling hills and pretty trees. Great value!
Significant Upgrade in Past Couple of Years
Had first tee time and arrived early. Started round at 6:35 AM and finished in 2 hours and 40 minutes as a single. Given the significant amount of winter kill around Charlotte courses, the turf conditions were very good. Bunkers had drained well from the rains the day before and sand was overall pretty soft. Only complaint is the greens were severely ball marked and pretty slow. Course has started an aggressive tree removal program (on-going it appears) which has provided improved sight lines, more sunlight and therefore dryer turf. For rack rate of $33 on a holiday morning this is a great deal.
Great value
This course will be a top contender in the near future!!!!
What a find
About 10 miles out 40 off of 77. Our course had been aerated so we looked for somewhere different to play. Greens were near perfect, fairways were great and bunkers properly maintained. Lots of blind shots, elevation, dog legs and winding creeks to keep you on your toes. You'll definitely improve by many stokes after your first time there. Beautiful private setting on par with some of the best in the charlotte area. Great value for the money and they actually appreciate your business. We played during drought conditions but the course showed no signs of it.
Nice Course, Friendly Staff. Great Greens. Great Value. Overall, great course.
Played on a Friday morning. Had 1 1/2 " rain night before. But course held up nicely. Its a $25 course all day long. Great value. Would not pay more but that goes for any course. Overall it was a great experience. Last time I played the course, it was North Carolina National and it was ok. The owner was great and the grill staff (not sure her name but pretty sure she was manager) was extremely nice and very outgoing. It was a little slow pace of play because we had a twosome infront of us that rather talk than play golf. Not the course to blame. That happens everywhere. But my biggest complaint is that this course has a lot of blind shots. Very challenging to say the least. First time playing the course is almost impossible since there are not yardage marked for layups. Would be nice if on the tee box they would tell you the distance to layup areas. It may take several rounds before you figure it out. Did almost get hit on one hole. But again that was because the twosome in front of us were too busy on their phones and the twosome behind us were not paying attention. But again overall, a great course and layout. Will definitely play again as long as the price doesnt increase. I'm cheap.
Nice Surprise
River Oaks was in the best shape I have seen it in a number of years. we were able to play early in the morning and finish around promptly.they are doing some improvements to the course including taking out a number of trees and if you can overlook those I think you will really enjoy your round there. kudos to the staff for being very friendly and helpful.we were very pleased with the condition of the Greens some of the best we've seen this time of year.
Great course!!
Not sure about the recent reviews calling this place the worst course ever. I thought it was a great course. There are elevation changes on almost every hole, so proper club selection is a key. The greens were excellent, and the fairways were in great shape. Tee boxes were hit or miss; those in secluded spots were a little bare. This is not a walking course. There was some evidence of recent tree removal, but nothing that affected play. The course wasn't overly busy on a Sunday morning, but it seemed like all of the groups were in the same spot. The ranger did his best to keep everyone moving. I will definitely come back.
Beautiful
They have worked really hard on the maintenance of this course and it shows. Fairway's and greens were in great shape. I will playing this course again very soon!
