Winding Creek Golf Club
Played Winding Creek for the first time on Sunday. It checks most of the boxes you would use to define 'muni.' This isn't a bad thing, per se. You have to traverse your way down a couple of narrow roads and past a church to get to it. There was the normal Sunday morning group getting ready to go out, and the pro shop staff did a great job in getting me out in front of them. I had the course open and to myself for the rest of the round.
There is a putting green outside the pro shop and a driving range towards the back of the parking lot.
Course knowledge will definitely help you out here, as there are definitely 'hit it here, not there' places on this course. The overriding theme of the course are that there are no flat spots anywhere, with the exception of tee boxes. Every lie in the fairway will be either uphill downhill, or side hill. The same goes for the rough as well. There is a fair amount of elevation change on the course, and quite a few doglegs. Some holes cut through trees, while others are exposed, almost links-like. A creek comes into play on the 2nd hole, and a pond on the 16th. Those are the only two water hazards on the course. The teeboxes were OK to a little shaggy. Fairways had plenty of grass on them. There were a few areas in the rough where large sections of turf had been replaced. There were also uncollected grass clippings in the rough, but they did not affect play at all. The rough was thick enough to be a hindrance, but not thick enough where you could not find your ball. The greens are fairly large and undulating. They had been punched fairly recently, so it was tough to tell how well they rolled, but they seemed to be a little above average as muni greens go. The bunkers were very well maintained and had plenty of soft sand in them.
Not ALL Bad
Ridiculously slow on the front. When you have three groups waiting on the tee just about every hole …… makes for a long day. Taking just under 5 hours to play 18 holes is insane!!! Layout is actually pretty cool minus the dumb second hole. Tee boxes were all just about trashed … cigarette butts and beer cans laying around (not to mention the 15 cans I had to remove from the cart we got at 8:15 a.m.). All that said, the golf course itself is fun to play and allows for misses without those crushing your round.
Decent place to play
Played on a Saturday so the pace of play was really slow. It’s a challenging course. Played in March so there wasn’t much grass. Most of the cart path is pretty rough. The pro shop is decently stocked and the staff was friendly.
Winding creek
We always enjoy plaiying Winding Creek, but this time they did not let Golf Now know that they had punched the greens the day before. It should have been an alert for me before I booked around.
Winding
Don't be afraid to play this course. Water doesn't come into play much unless you really hook one. Hilly course gives you some great views of the course.
Hope to play it again.
Wear A Helmet
Greens in good shape. Fairways and tee boxes are good for this time of year. That being said, you start right off with a blind tee shot that thanks to a ranger, keeps you from being killed. This course has many blind shots, not just off the tee but from fairways. Club selection very hard as every green on top a hill into the wind. Placement golf on steroids. The slow pace of play comes from the difficulty and the group in front of you. I actually saw a guy in front of me hit a driver backwards! He would swing 3 times and only be 100 yards off tee. None of the 4 broke 100. For God's sake take a double or triple max and pick it up. The course conditions, price all good. The design horrible and pace of play unbearable.
Overbooking
Not a bad course. I can only tell by the 3 holes that I played.
It took 1 1/2 to play 3 holes. I had to leave.
There was literally 2 foresomes on the second hole waiting at the tee box.
More fun than it costs!
Fun challenging course. Plenty of elevation changes to keep it interesting. If you’re precise or can move the ball off the tee, this is a great course especially given the $35 weekend w/cart fee.
Fun golf course. Have played it many times over the years. Pace of play can still be a "challenge", as we weren't affected because we went out early, but we did see a 6 some that was holding a bunch of groups up
Fun course but...
Fun course to play but pace of play on weekends is soul crushing. Ranger was trying though.
slowwwwwww...
Very short course (about 5,000 yards from senior tees). SLOW as molasses! Didn't see a ranger until 18th hole. I was part of a twosome, having to wait behind a foursome for the ENTIRE back nine! Out there for almost 5 hours! Debating whether to go back there again in near future.
Overbooked
The course is in much better shape but the waiting time for a Thursday was alot. I thought it would be better on the back 9 but it was even more backed up. There were two foursomes and a twosome waiting at #10 . I left and feel I should get a 9 hole raincheck.
Improvements
Winding Creek is a favorite local course, and they have made a couple of changes since I last played, they have all new carts and have recently added new sand to the bunkers.
While it can be congested on weekends, it is my favorite course for a quick paced mid-week round.
Slow greens
Greens are typically really slow and this round was worse plus we were not told they just aerated. They were extremely bouncy, slow and rolled terrible. This course is inexpensive and therefore a lot of new players so the pace of play is slow. Just be prepared to spend 5 1/2 hours on the weekend
