A Golf Course Derailed

My friend Nick had been asking us for years to come to his condo near Loon Mountain. He said there was a well known golf course just a few miles away. We were excited to then get a Sat. 10 AM tee time, until we pulled up at the course. We could see from the parking lot that time had not been kind to JOL. Then for $66. apiece we got 18 holes and a cart on what was allegedly a resort golf course and a some sales pitches from fast talking golf staffers. The course is squeezed in between some wooded areas, the Pemi River and a long stretch of semi-retired railroad tracks. Some of the holes are right on top of each other and balls fly blindly over the tracks prompting dozens of "fores!!" during a round. Our golf cart was hit twice by balls coming over the tracks. The course itself has been totally neglected. Weeds, crabgrass and dirt are more common than grass on the playing surfaces. Some greens and tees looked like they had been totally forgotten about. The highlight of the round was finishing in just under 5 hours and getting out of there. We felt completely taken for 66 bucks. I know most of the golfers are there on a stay and play package. It is their type of all inclusive, resort vacation and the quality of the golf must not be important to them. I would not recommend JOL to any other serious golfer, but recreational players may enjoy it for what it is or once was. This is one golf course that has clearly gone off its tracks.
