Crystal Springs Golf Club
About
Crystal Springs Golf Club in Hamburg touts a reputation of being not only the most challenging golf course in New Jersey, but also one of the most challenging layouts east of the Mississippi. The site filled with water after its use as a limestone quarry in 1929, which formed the natural springs on the 10th hole that the course is named after. The layout is definitely a shot-maker's course. Carefully sculpted mounding that frames the fairways and greens defines each hole. There is also tall and gnarly rough treacherously guarding the tight fairways. The golf course sits just a few miles from New Jersey's highest point, sprawling across an undulating terrain that makes it difficult to find an even lie. One of the most notably difficult, and subsequently the most talked about, holes is the 11th. The hole is perched atop a cliff overlooking the Windsor Quarry.

Ridiculous Pace of Play
Over three hours to play the front nine. Greens were hard but slow, like they haven’t been aerated this year. Some tee boxes and fairways beat up. I think due to sheer volume of play. Layout and difficulty fantastic. Beautiful surroundings and facilities. Made the 6+ hour round tolerable.
Good shape. Punishes you when you miss a Fairway
Too many uneven lies. Miss the fairway/green, even by a little, & the course punishes you. Some Fairways are cut so tight it takes an absolute perfect shot to not be in the rough.
READ THE FINE PRINT
If you book this course through Golfnow don't forget to read the fine print. That's the hidden print you will not see (unless you click on the little "i") which tells you there is an extra $3.00 charge booking through Golfjnow. And, the $3.00 will not appear in your Golfnow reservation email. Now, if you go over to "tee off dot com" they clearly show and tell you about the funky "$3.00 Resort Fee". What do you get for the $3.00? No clue. Parking is terrible, can never find a seat at the bar. The food at the restaurant is overpriced rubbish.
Been playing this course for 30 years. I love the challenge. However, be prepared because there are not enough rest areas if you have to use a bathroom. Chances are you won't' need too because the beverage cart seldom comes around. And, if the cart does come around its will surprise you, literally, just as you are ready to swing on the T box or sink a putt.
The staff driving around seldom has etiquette.
And, if you are playing this week, the greens were drilled and sanded.
Yeah, they 'teed me" off this week. lol.
Great course but not better than wild turkey
We started at 8:10 this morning and was done at 12:30 which was fantastic. We started on hole 10 which made us fly by.
The one issue was the course didn’t have directions from the 10th hole tee box back to the club house. Once we finished hole 9 which was our 18th today, we found it hard and confusing to get back to the club house. We easily wasted 10 mins driving around the course for no reason. Please address this issue.
If your not a accurate golfer don't bother small tight fairways pin location was very tough beatifiul maintained course. Lots of moguls on every hole
Reintroduction
I hadn't played Crystal springs in 15 + years. The routing is totally changed and the character altered due to the total lining of the course with housing. It was somewhat disorientating at times, to be honest. What hasn't changed is the challenge poised by the course. It is a penal as I remember it, even for what appeared to be a well played shot. Being a resort course you expect a little slower play by it took almost 6 hours to get around. The ranger was no help pushing the band of hacks in front of us reducing the enjoyment not only for our group but for every foursome behind us.
Great value
Not an easy course by any means but it's in great shape and you can't beat the value. Not overly long but you have to hit your targets. Greens are very true. Nice layout, will definitely be back.
Tight Tight Tight
One of the narrowest courses I’ve ever played but an enjoyable challenge. The greens at little over protected with sand. Really enjoyed the scenery. The par 3’s are great. Course was in good shape. Biggest complaint was the pace I was by myself and still took 31/2hours .was not busy but with no ranger people don’t feel the need to let you play thru or move at a decent pace.
Spring Training 2019
A nice day, the course a good challenge, conditions were fine considering it is March. The pace of play, slower. 4.75 hours for 18.
Staff was excellent from registration, to setting up our cart, on course staff and then assisting at the end of the round, friendly, professional and helpful.
In good shape for Nov.
Crystal Springs is a rather odd layout. Having said that, this time of year it is a good deal in good shape with good amenities and a good staff. Pace of play is usually a little slow so the lesser traffic of autumn really helps. Worth doing for a change of pace from the ordinary. One note: beware of special rates for aerated greens because they tend to overfill the holes and it’s like putting in a sandbox. Still, it’s worth checking out most of the time.
Very tough course!
I love Crystal Springs because there's hardly anyone EVER on the course .. partly owing to the fact that it is an extremely difficult course. However, the conditions are always very good and the staff and amenities are always top notch. An unbelievable value for under $30!
Must play
Everyone is afraid of playing this course because they think it’ll be too hard. Yeah you might lose 2-3 balls but it is a lot of fun to play and it’s very well kept.
