Thorn Apple Country Club
About
Thorn Apple Country Club is perfect for long hitters with the back tees stretching to over 7,000 yards, but there is enough variety in the layout to appeal to a variety of tastes and skill levels. The Jack Kidwell design features generous greens that are easy to hit balanced by challenging fairways. The club claims that if you can hit these fairways, you can hit any fairway. Water is a prominent feature of the golf course. A whopping 11 water hazards lurk throughout and come into play on most of the holes. There are also a few strategically placed bunkers to watch out for. There are a number of tricky holes, including a demanding 245-yard par 3. During a round, golfers might catch a glimpse of the redtail hawks, ducks, and geese that Thorn Apple Country Club shares the landscape with.

Not friendly
The people who run this place need to relax. I called and booked a tee time for three and briefly mentioned I’d have my 4 year old daughter with me. I didn’t think twice after doing so as I often take her with me and every other course in the area is more than happy to accommodate. Most pro shop staff are happy to see a young girl who is excited to get into golf, as that helps continue to grow the game.
When me, the two I was golfing with, and my daughter showed up, the people in the pro shop informed us we were paired with a 4th. No problem at all, I get that you need to get all spots filled. We simply let them know that the person who was paired with us would need their own cart since my 4 year old daughter was riding with me. Honestly, the manager (or owner? Gray-haired older man) made a scene. Finally when my group said we would just leave, they let us go out, but continued to badger us about it. The guy said “we better not see her hitting any balls out there.” Dude, she’s 4 years old. She can barely lift a club but she is showing interest in the game and spending time with her father.
FURTHER - the gray haired man approached me when we were on the green for hole 2 (right by the club house) and started to lecture me about how I need to take the golf cart keys with me every time I leave the cart because my daughter could take over the golf cart and crash it into the club house. Are you kidding me? He was not friendly about this either.
The guy who got paired with us that we didn’t know remarked about how ridiculous they were acting. All it did was make everyone uncomfortable.
I won’t come back here to golf, and my daughter won’t either when she’s old enough to actually play. We will stay in the north Columbus/Delaware area where they are happy to see little girls who have interest in golf, not make them feel bad for coming out to the course.
Great course, horrible staff
The title says it all. This is a great course. Worth the money? That's debatable. But it's in good shape, and I felt like it was easy enough for bad players, and challenging enough for good players. It's wide open, and flat, but a small creek at the right distances on certain holes can create a challenge. The food in the clubhouse was very reasonable in terms of price/value. Now the bad part. The staff is horrible. Rude at first when we paid. My group got yelled at for driving too close to the greens, and we almost never left the cart path. Then we got yelled at for pace of play. My group was playing ready golf, and we all happened to hit bad tee shots on 16. The ranger came up to us saying we were playing too slow. The group in front of us was a twosome that was a complete hole ahead, and the foursome behind us was still on 15 green when we left 16 tee box. Keep in mind this is on a Sunday morning which is primetime for hackers. Bottom line, the guys that run the place are complete A-holes. My group (foursome) finished 18 in 4 hours and 5 minutes and that's including 10-15 minutes at the turn. How is that for pace of play? So all of the reviews about the staff online were validated. I gave this course an honest, and fair rating. Great course, horrible staff. As much as I'd like to go back, and redeem myself on a few holes; I will NEVER give them my money again. Go play Mentel instead
Solid and fun course
Solid course the greens could be kept up a little better but I think it’s fun and pretty challenging.
Dangerous
This was the first time I played this course and it is not worth the money.
First of all, the grass is far too long. If you hit your ball out of the fairway, it’s extremely hard to find. But, most importantly, there are three holes that are dangerous as the green from one lines up directly in front of the tee box of the other. If you’re teeing off, you are in danger of being struck by the golfer who is hitting his ball to the green he’s playing. Those holes are 7 & 8, 11 & 12 and 17 & 18.
In review, the course is flat, the greens are in good condition and the fairways need to be for manicured as mentioned above.
Mid day round
Hit the ball pretty well on a cool fall day. Putting was an adventure as they have begun to aerate. Still managed to sink a 40 footer for birdie. The course is so long, it makes it tough to score. A couple of the Par4’s would be Par 5’s at most other courses, and the Par 3’s are a test for sure. I’ll be back for the test again,
Decent but not coming back
Overall, decent place to golf. Holes are a little too long for my preference but overall, maintained well. My biggest issue was the starter/owner (old guy). He was very pushy and not very polite. I was first told i wasnt allowed to bring my lunch cooler...which had only water. No drink cart was going around either. He then proceeded to yell at us to get on the tee box and start to not hold back the other groups. The group in front was 200 yds out.... I won't be back.
Poor customer service and safety
I have played this course many time with a normal, OK rating. Sunday I brought my father to play and we tee’d off 45 minutes late because no carts were available. Tee times were not regulated and it turned to be a free for all. Luckily we were able to receive rain checks as we decided to only play 9(turn around was backed up due to poor pace of play and timing).
I went tonight to redeem a raincheck and when I returned my car window was shattered. It was still surrounded by other cars, people mentioned they saw something suspicious but no one would give the police a statement. My wallet and property was stolen, but my alarm went off although none of the staff reacted. After 3 hrs of reporting and finally getting towed, not one of the staff members said sorry, explained show they tried to help or mentioned they needed better security. Only the bartender said something while i was on hold with my insurance company.
Very displeased with the service and security of this course. Will not be back.
Long but Wide Open
I like this course but there isn't a whole lot to it. You can make a lot of mistakes and get away with them since it is fairly open.
