Union League National Golf Club - Sherman/Grant
About
Union League National Golf Club on the Jersey Shore is a course that earns its former name (Sand Barrens), thanks to the varied sand traps and waste bunkers. Designed by Dana Fry and Dr. Michael Hurdzan, the South/West Course measures 6,895 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 136. The front nine is a little open and has more undulating greens than the back. Look for No. 4, which plays 439 yards and is one of the course favorites. It gets no easier on the back nine, which finishes with two challenging par 4s.
Formerly known as South/West at Sand Barrens Golf Club and Union League National Golf Club - South/West.

Sand Barrens is Back!
I have been playing Sand Barrens since it first opened, and have always enjoyed the layout. Over the past few years, however, the condition of the course, especially in late summer, has not been good. There was some sort of fungus that caused the turf to pull up in clumps.
This is not the case this year, the course is in fine shape. We played in late morning the day after overnight storms. The course was wet, cart path only, water in the traps. In spite of these conditions, the course held up well. The greens had not been cut or rolled that day, so they were slow and bumpy. I look forward to going back to play in better conditions.
Sunday
Flew through front Nine only to get completely jammed up on back. Played a few days earlier and greens were in great condition. By sunday, they tend to be a little beat up.
Sand Barrens is Back!!!
It's taken awhile to get the course back from two years ago but the new management and the returning staff are a welcome sight !! I love the new rough design strategy that the new superintendent has implemented. Welcome Back I missed you Sand Barrens!

Sand Barrens South/North
Nice layout, great pace of play but the greens were a bit bumpy and the sand is very rocky. Overall a good golf course to play
Great Course
Every time I play here I am not at all disappointed. Great course and staff for the money. Some challenging holes and pace of play is fantastic.
What a gem...
Excellent golf course...very reasonable on price. Love that they have 3 nines, so you never have to wait. The staff are very friendly and gave us Xtra towels in case it rained. Has a great bar with drafts and good food. Greens are true and much better than previous years. I would like them faster, not that they are slow. ..just like fast greens.... Can't wait to go back!
Good day
Great course. Great pace of play. Great condition. Can't wait to play again
challenging course
S-B course in beautiful condition. Played on a Friday afternoon in summer no wait great pace glad they have three nines-no six hour rounds!
Not the same
Just is not what it used to be. Always thought it was over designed with too many bunkers; why a bunker 120 yards off the tee near the woods? Already a terrible shot by what surely is a high handicap golfer... Anyway combine that with less than average conditions just is not fun. Wish it was better. Still will be back.
Very nice course in good condition.
Sand Barrens was in very good condition. Very large greens. One was a double green that the GPS gave a distance to center of the double green. One of my playing partners had a 125 foot putt. Other greens were large also. We had many putts over 50 feet. Neither cart could get the GPS to work. There are three nines that criss cross. Markings for next hole should be better. A lot of waste areas (hence the name). Definitely worth playing.
Great Shape
Course was in excellent shape and the sand came into play on almost every hole as expected
A Jewel at the Jersey Shore
I can't believe I waited so long to play Sand Barrens -the course is challenging but fair, in great condition, and they have a very friendly staff. Will be playing this every year during my Shore vacation!
Water am I nuts
It was cart path only and the water system was running got me
Ed
Over priced for the quality of course. Not as well kept as in the past
Great course
Despite 5 inches of rain the day before the course played very well. The course was in nice shape.
Jag
The course was in great shape and we played in under 4hrs. Shocking for shore golf.
Great value through Golfnow.com
I have played this Sand Barrens numerous times and enjoy it each time. Reserved through the "hot deals" so I played it last-minute at a great savings. Weather was clear and hot. Bag drop-and the clubhouse staff were friendly and professional as always. The starter John was less-than-cordial and rather unpleasant. the course itself is beautiful with true fairways and enormous greens. It's not particularly long which suits my game. There were no refreshment carts along the way and the stand at the turn was closed around 4:30pm. Alcohol is not served to the general public here. I had to backtrack to the clubhouse for a soda where the disinterested hostess and lack of bartender was a turn-off. What made this a good round however was the condition of the course and the huge discount I received. The carts used to be equipped with GPS monitors and the course was much more high-end in it's attentiveness. The course itself though is still a nice day.
Late Tee Time Deal
We got a good deal starting the course around 4 PM! Fairways were laid out nicely as well as the greens were outstandingly playable! I did fairly over average at this course even though the pace of play was over 6 hours into the dark. But it was worth the price!
Too many similar holes
I play SB about once a year and am always underwhelmed. The first holes are the same, there are two dogleg right holes that are the same, the par 3's (outside of the one over water back towards the clubhouse) are very forgettable and similar - no real memorable holes.
It's not a bad course, but when you are charging such a high fee and there are other options around, it is not at the top of my list down the shore.
practice facilities are nice - range, putting, and chipping areas.
Some narrow areas to drive the ball, and the wind was blowing good when we played and the tree lined shoots can make it even more impactful.
