Union League National Golf Club - Meade/Grant
About
West/North at Union League National Golf Club measures 7,092 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 137. Located on the Jersey Shore, Union League National G.C. earns its name with sand everywhere, in traps and bunkers. West/North gets the sand rolling on No. 4. Big hitters can make it to the green, but the rest have to navigate past an ocean of sand. The West/North ends with nine holes considered the toughest at Union League National. Two holes stand out: No. 16, a long par 4, and No. 18, a par 3 that requires a carry over a pond to a peninsula green.

Must play!
Sand Barrens is back! After suffering poor course conditions for the past few years this course is absolutely fantastic now! 27 holes on site, we played north to south. Big greens, immaculate conditions, rolled true, undulating breaks. Fairways in great shape! Waste bunkers can be challenging if you stray off the fairway but most fairways are big enough to be forgiving. $78 greens fees are a little steep but given the other courses are in the area it is worth it. Definately a must-play if your're looking to play anywhere south of Atlantic City.
What a good golf course !!!
There are no negative comments to say. For sure we recommend this golf club to any addicted golf players who enjoy the nature, be in good company and likes to play with moderate challenges.
The only bad comment is the starter and the marshall havent like to be in the good moods!!! They were unceremoniously and stricts.
Great Layout, challenging course
They really did a nice job with the space for this club. Unlike Avalon, the holes have nice separation and you don't have to fear an approach shot hitting you in the head when you tee off from the next hole. The sand is prevalent, but can be avoided with solid shot making. Overall, the course was in great shape and we have a lot of fun playing it. Sorry I have missed out on this course for the last five years, but I will be a regular now!
Outstanding day.
Thanks Will be back more this summer. Conditions and pace of play were terrific Jeff Jax. Ocnj
Excellent
Look forward to playing it again. The course had challenging holes great condition and they kept the pace of play moving. I would suggest it to anyone knowing that on holidays it will be busy and play could be slow.
A nice afternoon...
I enjoyed the course but I wouldn't say there is anything that makes it stand out.... Except for the over abundance of sand - like... To the point of ridiculous.
Most if te holes were fair tests if your game. I played from the tips and found the yardages off the tee to be way off. The course is NOT as long as it claims. Yardages from the fairway seemed accurate.
The yardages may seem like a small thing but it scews the handicaps, which is a pet peeve of mine.
But nice people. Nice place. Okay conditions. A nice afternoon.....
Sand Barrens Revisited
Had not played the course in about a year and half, due mainly to the poor conditions the last several times I played there. I decided to give it another shot and was pleasantly surprised about the improvements on the course, it was in much much better condition. If the trend continues I would play there again regularly. The course is an interesting layout and with continued TLC could be a worthwhile regular play spot.
The Sand Man Got Me Again
Played the South-North combo of the three nines. Course was in excellent condition. The SB’s distinctive pebbly bunkers (waste and greenside) are all over the place and are best avoided. Many pine tree-lined fairways and some significant contours on the greens. This course always seems to beat me up. (I think the slope ratings are understated.) But I’ll definitely return to SB, especially at a $30ish Hot Deal price.
They don"t call it the Sand Barrens for nothing
We played the West/North most fairways were ample .Only in 1 Bunker sand was iffy. Others in group were in quite a few times complain sand was inconsistant . It was a Hot day so they were watering greens so they were a little slow, but everyone of the staff members we incountered were very friendly and stopped what they were doing and waited to resume what the were doing. It's funny because we had commented the last time we played at another club the workers were cutting grass and trimming and never stoopped even when we were on the greens.
Golf and nothing else
Bring your own food. Bring your own beverages and don't plan on the staff to even notice you are there. Can't serve beer unless you're making your tee time today for sometime in 2016 Overall course in decent shape for the price and relatively easy to play. Hazards at the average golfer driving distance all over the course and no way to figure this out until you hit into it. No visible maps on scorecard. Just not the amenities and service you would expect from a resort town golf course in peak season.
some disappointing problems
No cart going around for beverages. Cannot take your own into the course. Cannot buy alcoholic beverages unless your a member. The halfway house closed before we made the turn. Water on the course was warm and had bad taste. Very disappointing on a hot day.
Sand City
I knew I was in trouble as I drove into the long entrance to the Sand Barrens. I saw more sand traps and sandy waste areas in their landscaped entry then I see on my municipal course.
On the first hole I found three areas of sand on my way to a double bogie. I guess I asked for it, as you let us know that we are in store for acres of sand.
The course was beautiful, everyone went out of their way to be friendly and courteous.
I felt like I was at a private country club. Their was very little play. We played at a nice pace, seeing very few other golfers.
We never saw a ranger or starter, but never needed one.
The only negative comments I would make is that the cart paths could have the directional markings freshened up to guide players around the course, and the facility was understaffed for this time of year. Great Course.
Great Experience at One of My Favorites
I really enjoyed this course because of the layout and the course condition. The fairways and greens were perfect, the rough was a little challenging but do-able. The course was quite empty and felt like a private course. I had a 12:45 tee time on a Monday.
Nice Course, but Slow Pace
Sand Barrens is a very nice place to play. I would definitely recommend to anyone, but we had one problem. There were no rangers on the course, which in turn had a few foursomes playing very, very slow. Every time we shot, we had to wait 10 minutes before our next shot... We have never played anything like this before and took us over 6 hours to play!!
Very pleasent
Play here often. Course right now is in very nice shape. Like the fact of 27 holes. Makes each round a new experieance. As summer comes on course can show signs of trouble. So get out and enjoy
Long rough
I have liked this course since the original 18 opened. For this round however the rough was pretty long, and made for tough conditions around the greens for recreational golfers and lies in rough off the fairways either produced a flyer or you were luck to be able to advance the ball 100 yards. Not a criticism of the course, just the conditions the day I played. I am sure weather was a factor for the rough not being cut unless there is an important outing/tournament being played there in the near future.
very nice track
Great golf course with very interesting layout. It was in very good shape but please cut the rough .
Great layout
Always liked this course. Like going to the Carolinas for the day. Doesn't feel like South Jersey. Not flat
The feedback that we can get through these reviews is often valuable. The good reaffirms our commitment to excellence, while the not-so-good offer us the opportunity to see where we can improve. Normally, we do not reply to any of them, allowing the comments to stand on their own for our customers to judge. However, once in a while, it is necessary to correct glaring inaccuracies. This is one such case.
There is no need to bring your own food: Sand Barrens offers a full-service restaurant and Grille Room. Food, beverages and snacks are also available from the starter and, in-season, at the Half-way house.
Our staff always strives to provide the most courteous and attentive service in the industry—a fact in which we take great pride.
Like many golf courses in NJ, Sand Barrens operates under a NJ Club Liquor License, which by state law requires a three day waiting period before alcohol can be purchased. Since the vast bulk of tee-times are made more than three days in advance, this really is not an issue. After that initial period there is no restriction.
There is a map prominently featured on the scorecard.
While we welcome ALL comments in our effort to provide the best golfing experience at the New Jersey Shore, we felt the need to correct these inaccuracies posted in an anonymous “review”
