Hocking Hills Golf Club & Urban Grille (formerly known as Brass Ring Golf Club) has a traditional layout that measures in at just under 5,400 yards, but it feels as though it is much longer. Jack Kidwell, a name easily recognized by anyone who has played golf in Ohio, designed the course. The undulating terrain has interesting elevation changes and white pine trees that line the fairways. It is a layout that demands accuracy with small greens and narrow fairways. Water hazards also come into play on a few holes as well as strategically placed bunkers. Tucked away in the hills of southeastern Ohio, the golf course offers scenic views of the Hocking Valley. There are many challenging holes, but the course is still gentle enough for beginners. Hocking Hills Golf Club & Urban Grille offers one of the best golfing values in the area.

It's ok

I walked but the golf cart situation is silly. It's cart path only with the carts having GPS and shutting down if you deviate from the cart path. This seems totally unnecessary for a course that's in just ok shape. It really lengthened the round because of all the seniors struggling to walk the rugged terrain. Also no driving range. I feel like the fact that it is in Logan and there's not much competition is the reason they can get away with it. It's a shame that they don't maintain it better because I think the layout is not something you see much of in central Ohio. If they did something about the carts I'd consider coming back. As it sits, I can't see making the drive to Logan to play a 5 hour round at what is essentially an overpriced muni with a unique lay-out.

Yikes

Hadn't played this course in about 20 years and it's gone way downhill. They mow the fairways and rough with a bush hog so not a real golf mower and with all the crabgrass you couldn't really distinguish between the two anyway. With such a dry summer there were still somehow standing water spots on some holes too. The greens were somehow hard and slow. I'd give them a 2 and the rest of the course a 0. I'd expect a place like this to be no more than $25 for 18 holes but paying $39 there is absolutely no reason for the course to be in that bad of shape. It did look like they were putting a lot of money into a revamped clubhouse/restaurant that could end up pretty nice so maybe once that's done they'll switch back to the course itself.

Avoid

Very poorly maintained. So poorly in fact that there is a dead animal on the very first green that has clearly been there for several months. Tee boxes were covered in crab grass. You couldn't distinguish the fairway from the rough. The course was hard to navigate, even with the map. The greens had not been rolled and were spray-painted. Pitch marks never repaired and turning black. Golf cart's do not operate well, requiring you to pump the petal until it engages. The cost is way too much for the quality.

Puzzled

Let me first start by stating I was vacationing from South Carolina, I say this because we have tons of lovely courses in our state. However, my partner is from Michigan and he has the same views as myself. I have played several nice courses in Michigan. This course surprised me in every way. Not in a positive way, I will make bullets to get my point across.
1) Absolutely terrible conditioned course for July, We lost about 10-12 balls in the middle of the fairway. The rough, fairway, and fringe were identical. Absolutely horrible! This is similiar to a $10.00 course where I come from. Completely terrible they can't cut the fairways better. Also, they utilized a cartpath only for this lettuce infested course. I was completely blown away. Why? This course is in such bad shape why would you possible keep carts off????

2) I gave the staff friendliness a good rating because they were friendly. Especially the bar/kitchen staff, Heather I believe is her name, really worked hard and the food was good and beer is cold. Beautiful grill/bar area. Very very clean. Also, the gentlemen working on the course were very courteous each time we were up to hit, they would stop running equipment to allow us to play. Well done guys.

3) I paid 32.00 to play here, way overpriced. Just not good at all. not for these fairways. Zero water or coolers on the course for the players, no signs warning you of steep hills, faded signs at each green which makes you have to guess quite a bit for hazards.

In closing, this course has potential to be beautiful with some of the views from a few tee boxes. However, the manicure was just so bad. I may be biased being from the South and looking at Bermuda all the time but I was very puzzled. My partner is from the north as well and was just as frustrated. Let me also mention I am a recreational golfer so I do not play "elite" courses just average to above average and every now and again a super nice course.

I would not recommend playing here until someone with a good golf sense understands how to best reach your players.
