Union League National Golf Club - Sherman/Meade
About
Featuring more than 100 acres of sand, Union League National Golf Club in Swainton, N.J., is a semi-private golf course on the Jersey Shore. It's not all sand, though. The luxuriant fairways could almost be greens. The North/South at Sand Barrens G.C. measures 6,969 yards from the longest tees. The golf course kicks things off on No. 3, a 401-yard par 4 and one of the most popular holes on the course.
Formerly known as North/South at Sand Barrens Golf Club and Union League National Golf Club - North/South.

one of the easy par 3's for the day. 210 yard to the pin and 180 to carry the water. Photo submitted by golfnut593 on 03/12/2013
Fast greens. Competitive but not to tough
Course in great shape compared to other courses in the area
Good for the time of year
Course was just aerated and they had a large crew working around the golfers that evening in preparation for early summer season when they are busiest. Enjoyed the course as usual and fairly reasonable for an even tee time
In good condition for the winter they had.
The course was in good shape for the time of year and the winter they had. I've played this course in season and would give it 5 stars across the board.
Greens where great !!!
I have played Sand Barrens in the winter for the past 20 years and have never found the greens this good.
Normally the greens are ok. My only issue was that the fairways were a little muddy but were still very acceptable for December 15th. Only a few holes were cart paths only. We had a great day and played 36 holes in less than 8 hours.
Just ok
Theirs just too much going on. Between the ginormous sand traps and trees. You better be one heck of a shot off the tee box. If u don't hit the fairway forget it. Staff is great. Hot deal was nice. I won't go back. Theirs to many other nice places to play down the shore. The prices down their are unbeatable right now. Do brigantine or twisted dunes. The barrens is kind of a bummer. Believe me your not missing anything. Besides your ball
great day
excellent day golf and weather
Looking for another chance to play.
Nice layout
Sand Barrens has a nice layout with it's 27 hole design. You can rotate on to the 3 different nines on different outings. Our West/North on Tues was under perfect conditions. The tee boxes, fairways were perfect. The rough was deep and thick and made your recovery shots hard. The only real problem was the greens. They were hard and really fast. I've played at Disney the day after the PGA was there and thats what putting here was like. As with most amateurs, we had a hard time with this
A nice play
My wife and I played Sand Barrens on 10/24/14 under partly sunny skies, mild temps and a bit of wind. The course was lightly trafficked and we had lunch before our round. The food was good, if a tad overpriced. The major disappointment was that you cannot purchase alcohol on the course unless you're a member or sponsored by one, as they have a "private liquor license". I'd never heard of such a thing, but it IS New Jersey, so nothing should surprise me....The course is about 40 minutes from the AC strip, but its a fast drive down the Garden State Pkwy. once you get out of AC. The staff was very friendly and apologetic about the alcohol policy. The starter was knowledgeable and personable and gave us a lot of useful info. The course was in nice overall condition. The carts had an unusual but nice GPS system. Much of the sand is aesthetic and not really in play unless you're really spraying the ball. The traps are full of shale though, so watch the clubs. We picked a lot of stones out before hitting. The greens had been aerated a few weeks prior, but were well healed and rolling smooth. They're huge and full of undulations too. We enjoyed the course a lot. It has similarities to Twisted Dune but is more of a parkland style course where Twisted Dune is more links style.
Like a Sponge
course absorbed a lot of water from weather and having been recently air rated.Greens were the fasted I played this year with tough pins. They had moved the tees forward because there was no roll, lots of plugging in fairways and first cut of rough. Still loved it very friendly staff. The cart path only was a killer next day.
not what I though it would be
I really expected a better course but this doesn't live up to the hype. Glad I played it but won't be coming back
Great course, a huge turn around
Conditions are excellent and you should give it a look
Great first time at Sand Barrens
I was anxious to try this course, and was not disappointed. The weather was great, and at noon on a Sunday the course was deserted. We played quickly, and found the greens fast and true, the fairways nice (though recently aerated), and the general views of the course beautiful. I loved it!
Advertising on the GPS - really!
Liked everthing but having to listen to ads on the GPS. Seriously- ads on the GPS while you are trying to golf. No! No! No!
End of summer fun
Played the course with my wife. Course was in good shape but round was slow. Lots of sand as the name inplies. Retired so it wasn't like we were pressed for time, but somebody need to tell a foursome three groups in front of us, "while we're young". The on course bathroom, women room was lock and didn't make the wife to happy and then to top it off at the end of the round we tried to buy a couple of drinks in the clubhouse. Couldn't because we weren't members. We were good enough to spend our golf dollars there but not good enough, to buy a couple of drinks. So we took our money and spent it elsewhere and may do so with our golf dollars next time.
Challenging course
Great course . loved the large greens. Traps were tough (hard as concrete) so I tried to stay out of them. Overall the couse was in great shape.
very well maintained
I would only play this course if you can get a deal on golfnow, its very long with many hazards. you must use some course management to really score well and practice your sand wedge before you go. kind of a far drive for me but I really enjoyed it at a great price.
Great value
Great value but sign up to become free social member at least a day before playing because only members can buy alcohol.
Great value
Beautiful scenery. Great layout. Highly recommended. For sure playing here again.
So glad to be back to the course I love
I've always been a big fan of Sand Barrens, except the past two years when things went a bit south. I'm so glad that they have been able to battle back from the stressed turf conditions and get the courses back to the outstanding conditions I knew from years ago. Played West-North combo this time out and had a hard time finding fault with any of the tees, fairways or greens. Greens rolled to what I guess to be about 10 and were very true. As with any public access track (and unfortunately many private ones nowadays) ball marks fail to be repaired and present their natural unevenness and delay of play while being fixed prior to putting. Staff from arrival, to pro shop, to food and beverage were all very cordial. Remember to apply for your free membership ahead of time (online) to Oaks Club if you want to purchase adult beverages. Can't wait to get back to Sand Barrens!! Highly recommend you make the effort to get there if you're in South Jersey / Atlantic City.
Vacation Golf
Great course if you are vacationing near by. I would make the trip down even if I wasn't vacationing near by.
