Mastodon Golf Club
About
Situated midway between Hebron and Newark, Mastodon Golf Club (formerly known as Burning Tree Golf Course) is an 18-hole layout whose location has unique historical significance. In 1989 while digging a new pond for the course, a crewmember discovered fossils of the extinct American Mastodon. Although the original skeleton resides in Japan, the course is home to a full-sized replica as well as over 150 other replicas of both dinosaurs and Ice Age mammals. The museum-quality replicas make the golf course a fun place for families. In addition to the natural history lesson it offers, the course also provides a relaxing round that players of any skill level will enjoy. The regulation-length course has a classic layout that is both accessible and a fair challenge. The affordable rates make Burning Tree even more appealing.

Never Again!
Tee boxes needed mowing, need more signs to guide you to the next tee boxes, cart path was a maze. Greens patchy.
Thanks for your participation at our course and posting about us. look forward to seeing you back out.
Overall a nice course
The course itself appears to be somewhat of a work in progress. The layout can be challenging to follow in spots but it's a nice mix of short and long holes with some nice challenges. Overall it's a nice course and very affordable. The staff was great! Will definitely be back.
Would not play!!!
I called the club house for the course conditions and was told that it was playable. I only played 5 holes because the course was in such bad shape and had a lot of standing water on the fairways. I would never recommend or play here again. Also the signage was very misleading to where the next hole would be.
I am sorry to hear that someone provided bad direction in terms of course condition in December during your round. I hope you give us another chance in the golf season when we are at our best. I really hate seeing your post and grades based on a winterized course. We stay open through the winter for the die hard golfers that simply want to get out and have some swings. I apologize if any of my staff provided you with a different perception of our course during the off season. I am interested to understand what you found poor about our amenities as we have a full bar, billiards, virtual golf, darts and a friendly staff. Hope another chance is given when we are at our best in the golf season.

Appreciate your review and your business.
Nice Greens+ Fun layout
Nice mix of holes with smooth greens.Staff provided map of layout which came in handy. You can tell improvements and course maintenance is in the works. Course management a must to score well especially on back nine. Some holes are close together but as long as etiquette and awareness are used not a problem.Enjoyed our round and will play again.
golfing
course was different in its layout. Remined me of the extinct Estate Club with all the holes intertwined. the fairways need some water on them. Clean the course up and mowed it regularly it will be nice course.
Everything You need for Golf & Fun
Good course overall. Great price for virtual golf, with pool tables in clubhouse. I will be back.
Nice day and course, watch when/where you cross!
Course overall was good!
One of the most challenging parts was figuring out where the next tee was located and pay attention to crossing another hole. Improved signs or direction would improve play.
Jurassic I guess
I don’t know if they pump the smell in to remind you of the age of the Mastodon or if it’s the cow farm adjacent to the course, but wow…not for the weak of stomach! The fairways are reminiscent of a quaint Colombian airstrip from the 80s. A fair amount of bare spots, so you can’t play the ball down. The rough is an exotic mix of what appears to be fescue and crab…not sure how to judge how the ball will react. Bright spot is you don’t have waste time or energy fixing pitch marks as no matter how high I hit the ball I was unsuccessful in creating one. Downside is holding shots is pretty comical, even for a single digit player. The core clientele, from what I can gather, don’t adhere to a strict dress code, unless that dress code is cutoffs and sleeveless shirts. There’s a ton of options at lower and higher prices you’d probably find more enjoyable.
Not real happy about having to leave front nine because they had a league night
Simple Layout
Layout was simple allowing much easier holes. Course had many spots with standing water. Course was well groomed. Greens were quite slow. Water features were a nice addition to the relatively flat course. Pace was quick and easy to get a round in under 3 hours.
Leo; This is Al Schultice the owner of the mastodon. Thanks for coming out. I realize you provided a poor rating for condition. I would like to explain that we have winterized the course and have no grounds crew working in Feb. on course conditions so please realize we are not at our best on Feb. 26th when you were out. Look forward tos eeing you back in the April/ May timeframe as it will be different.
