Sugar Isle Golf Course
About
Sugar Isle Golf Course was designed by Jack Kidwell, a familiar name among southern Ohio golf courses. Water is a prominent feature of the course, Kidwell incorporated it on more than half of the holes. Some 20 white sand bunkers are strategically placed throughout the layout, providing a scenic contrast to the water and lush greens. For an added challenge, many of the fairways are lined with mature trees although there is some room for error, which makes them more accessible. It is a course that will make you think but it is not too intimidating for beginners. The versatility makes it popular for outings and tournaments. Sugar Isle has even hosted the area's high school programs for more than 30 years. In addition to the golf course, there is also a driving range and large putting green.

Very slow pace of play
Not sure what the deal here is, but the last 5 or 6 times I've played this course, the pace of play is horrendous. Worst in the area for sure. Which is a real shame because the course itself is setup very nice and well maintained. As long as you don't mind sitting for 10 to 15 minutes after every hole to tee off, you'll enjoy this course.
Fun Day
The greens ran a little bit slower than my home course but they ran true and and in great condition. Fairways were wide with a few that were tree lined and some ponds. Layout was very playable out in the country. A nice and interesting course to play. Very friendly staff!
Don’t land in the sand
For the most part I enjoyed our time. There was a ranger that followed us around the front 9 but we had to ask him to say something to the good old boys in front of us who were so slow. I said that I would never play out of the sand if I landed in one because they were full of rocks.
Grazing pasture for goats
Horrible shape and pace of play. Horrible driving range and old golf carts. Now I see a hot deal for 50 bucks...that is criminal. Where have all the recent reviews gone. This place is the worst course in a 50 mile area. Even old abandoned courses would be a better deal.
Kicked off after playing ~ 2 holes of 18
I would not recommend this place as the staff here are not friendly at all or even understanding.
We went as a group of 5 people and booked two separate tee times with 2 of the 5 teeing off the first thing in the morning at 7:09 and the other group tee time at 7:18. As a group we watch each other at the green putting (Never had more than 3 people on the green at the same time). Once everyone was finished with the first hole, we continue to the second hole and the first group hits ahead of the second group as we are supposed to. By the time the first group finished and the second group got to the green, we would again watch them putt (again never had more than 3 people on the green).
As our last guy goes to putt his ball, the "course ranger" comes up and tells us we are done and to get off the course and he says that we are parked too close to the green and that it would be a warning; however, you guys are kicked off the golf course anyways so it doesn't matter. We asked why and he says "you guys are not supposed to play as 5 and have all 5 people on the green." We never had more than 3 on the green at a time. Then continues to yell at us and tells us to talk to the guy in the shop as he is the one that told the ranger to kick us off the course.
Anyone would be mad in this situation as we never received a warning, but soon to find out as we got to the shop the guy behind the counter said "I gave you guys your first warning when you first entered the shop" (in the shop? before we even teed off?) and then he said he gave another warning after our first group teed off and our second group began hitting as the first group was half way down the range. (Note: they wouldn't hit us as we all are beginners and none of us would be able to hit that far) The first warning pretty much indicates that we were already being targeted as soon as we walked through the door and the "second" warning is plausible but it wasn't indicated as a warning (you should literally say this is a warning if it was even a warning).
The way that we were playing to that point was not slowing anyone behind us down as “we” had two tee times and stayed within those tee times and if they thought that we were slowing them down it’s probably because we are beginners and take way more hits than people who have been playing the game for a while. Also, since the second group teed off maybe 3 mins after the first group teed off (~7:12), we were actually teeing sooner than our allotted time.
I understand kicking people off your course if they are not taking care of your course or destroying it, but we were not doing any of that. Also, as I mentioned we were the first tee off in the morning with no one ahead of us, if we were slowing people down then why not give us a warning and tell us to skip up a hole instead of kicking us out? This whole situation seems like we were targeted for no reason since we walked in the shop. The hostility took place as soon as we walked through the doors to pay for our game. And once again we are all new to golf (and new to the course), you could've just told us the rules so we can learn instead of kicking us out and pretty much robbing us.
TLDR: We paid about $200 for 5 people and it felt like we got targeted as soon as we walked in the door and after we played almost 2 full holes of 18 before we got kicked off the course with no warning.
Great Layout
Hadn't played this course since HS golf but I forgot how much I had loved the layout. We played the Blues and the course plays shorter than the yardage suggests in my opinion and it's very get-a-ble if you know where to place your shots if that makes sense. What makes this course so challenging are the putting greens. Lots of slopes and speed changes that are hard to judge. Would have to play quite a few rounds to get used to them. Course was in great condition except a few of the greens seemed to have little rough patches and feel bumpy but otherwise it was a great round and I will definitely be back this year!
Hi Farlow32. We appreciate you leaving a review and rating us. We will inform the entire team, so they know their hard work is paying off. We look forward to having you back!

Nice for the price
The course is well kept and in good shape. The front nine is a nice layout. The staff was very friendly and the rates are reasonable. Good value for the money.. I will play this course several more times this year with no regrets.
SLOW PLay
Course was busy due to the great weather which was not the problem. The problem was a couple groups ahead of us were so slow because they spent so much time looking for lost balls. 1 guy went over and was looking about 100 yards out into a cornfield. A ranger came out once and moved them along for a hole or 2 but then he disappeared. If proper course/time management was followed it would not have been an issue. We could only play 14 holes because it got so jammed up on the back 9 we just left. I won't be coming back here for quite awhile.

great day
We had a good day but we had to play the back 9 twice because of league play and then staff working on the front 9. It kind of takes away from the experience of playing 18.

Where did these guys come from?
I have played this course several times this year. Your course is a great course and plays tougher than you would expect. The one thing that keeps Time from ranking this course higher is that no one manages the people coming onto the course. Every time (5 thus far) someone has jumped on the course ahead of us without any regard to the pace of play (twice on 14, once in 10, and twice on 15), get a handle on what’s happening.

Absolutely love this course. It is my favorite one to play in the area.
Great course in the country
Sugar Isle is a great little course in the middle of the country. The layout is great and course is in decent condition for this early in the season.
Worth the $12 deal.
It’s a nice little course for beginners. It’s a very easy layout with very few places to get into trouble. Check your cart’s brakes before driving off because they don’t take care of them.
One big pro: they allow you to byob.
Not a 4 star course
One problem with ratings is that those who rate often don't play on more expensive and higher quality courses, especially true when the course in question, like this one, is in a remote area.
