About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2019.
Hawthorne Valley Golf Club in Solon is a Donald Ross design that is considered one of the best public golf courses in Ohio. Since opening in 1926, the course has undergone several improvements over the years that have built upon its longstanding reputation. It became more challenging while maintaining its classic design. The layout features numerous strategically placed bunkers as well as water hazards on several holes. The greens and fairways are also kept in immaculate condition. The final trio of holes is the most challenging on the course. The 16th is a long par 4 with a sloped fairway, and there is a lake on the left side of the fairway on the 17th. Hawthorne Valley Golf Club's finishing hole is a tricky par 4 that doglegs left and plays uphill.

Reviews
This course needs work. Seems like they are letting it go.
If u play the red tees the course is marked incorrectly a lot of holes.
Worth the play
Good price for the money. Pace of play is great. Only compliant is no sand to fill divots, and carts are pretty beat up.

Hawthorne was recommended by several golfers as a premier course. I arrived and teamed with two other golfers who knew the course. Hawthorne has a great layout with elevated tees and greens. Unfortunately the course was not in 4star condition. You can see it was at one time a premier course and the potential is there; it needs a lot of work. I would rate it a 3 star course. Still a good deal and a fun layout, I hope the owners continue to invest in bringing it back.

Very Good Course, Weekday morning round in 3 hours
Hawthorne has a fairly challenging layout with some quirky holes (#11 immediately comes to mind). Three of the four par 3's are very challenging and the last five holes are very challenging as well. Davey has kept the course in very good conditions, but the amenities have suffered. On a Thursday morning, two weeks in a row, we played as a twosome in about 3 hours. With the special this week on Golf Now - it was a great deal at $22.
DavidMillstone,

Hawthorne Valley - hidden gem
Hawthorne Valley is a very nice public course and the clubhouse is under new food/bev management. The course is in excellent shape given all the dry weather this summer. The greens roll well and the course is overall a good test.
The red tees have been moved up quite a bit (shorter yardage than card) but we never found out why as this may be temp tee boxes.

Thank you for the excellent 5-Star review! We appreciate you calling us a "hidden gem!" Come play again soon!

Amazing layout
Finally was lucky enough to play this course..the value for the money was absolutely amazing. The greens were excellent, and rolled true. Cannot say enough about the layout...classic Donald Ross. The course is just under 6400 yards, but it plays much longer. Shot selection and shaping is key! Can't wait to get back!
cocheeze15,
Thank you for the great 4-Star review! We are glad you enjoyed the layout, and that you found value in the course. We look forward to seeing you out there again soon!

thoroughly unimpressed
nothing about this course is country club quality. you can obviously tell how downhill it has gone since opening to the public. their two longest tee boxes, blue and gold, play from the same distance on 16/18 holes. the greens on 7 and 9 were under repair so they had temporary greens marked about 25 yards into the fairway. the clubhouse looks like it's been abandoned for years. nothing about this course impressed me and i doubt i will play here again.
mtjaskiewicz,
We are sorry to see this review come in, but please know that we are not a country club. We have changed our name to golf club. We hope you give us another shot soon, so we may exceed your expectations for next time.

Beautiful old country club
We enjoyed our round at Hawthorne Valley. It's a great Donald Ross layout with all of the feel of the old East side country clubs in Cleveland. Everything about our day was perfect.
dandjmorse,
Thank you for the excellent 5-Star review! We are happy you had a perfect day at the course. Come play again soon!

Dont spray it here!
Nice Donald Ross design, fairways were decent, rough was long and the bunkers were a little inconsistent. Greens were nice, medium pace. It was 90 degrees so some on course water would have been nice! Never did find the bar area. Would play again...

Unfortunate slide
Too bad the course looks like it's being taken care of with the bare minimum of efforts.
Dear u813761549,
We regret to see this review come in, but do hope you give us another shot soon so we may exceed your expectations. Heavy amenities have been removed from the club due to it being a public golf course compared to a country club. We are excited to re-open the course this past spring and understand there will be challenges along the way.

What Happened? ?
I play this course a few times a year. It is one of my favorites in the area. Today was my first time there this year. Noticed alot of changes and none were good.
Gone are the club boys that used to pick up your clubs in the parking lot. They no longer have water, snacks on the course. Didn't even have a starter. Looked like the staff was all but gone. The course was not to its usual good condition. The bunkers were full of water. It would be a shame to continue to neglect this great course like this. I was very disappointed.
Dear u000006645701,
We appreciate your feedback. We are happy to learn we are one of your favorite courses. The heavy amenities have been removed from the club due to it being a public golf course compared to a country club. Unfortunately, the old business model forced the course to close at the end of last season. We are excited to re-open the course this past spring and understand there will be challenges along the way. As play continues to increase we will continue to add amenities, but you are correct, it’s not what it used to be but we don’t view that as a bad thing since it's all on the path to improvement.

Gotta hit it straight
I was very impressed with this course. Very tight and hilly. A few blind shots on some of the holes. If you have a higher handicap, this may not be a course for you. My scorecard took a beatin'. The greens were fantastic. Now that I know the layout a little bit better and have a better picture in my head of where I want shots to land, I think I'll have a better round next time. The staff there is beyond nice. Food and drinks are very reasonably priced. I do look forward to playing here again.
06Mustang,
Thank you for the excellent 5-Star review! We are glad you enjoyed your round at the course from the layout, to food & drinks, to the quality of our staff. We look forward to your next visit--practice makes perfect!

good course
played with a coupon but I wouldn't have paid $53 regular price on a Saturday or Sunday to play there
Thanks for your feedback. We're glad you enjoyed our course and hope you decide to come back and play with us again!
No Water
It is preposterous that there is no water to drink or purchase from a cart. Otherwise, this is a wonderful course, one of the more difficult and interesting courses in the area. Requires players to hit a wide variety of shots, with very little margin for error.
Thank you for your review and feedback. We are pleased to hear that you enjoyed our course, but will take your feedback into consideration regarding the water situation. Please come back and play with us again soon!
July 2016 Hawthorne
It was a 90 degree temperature day and the course has no on course water to drink and no cart which drives around to purchase drinks. Pro shot has been moved upstairs which makes if difficult for some to climb the stairs. No bathroom or Porta-potties on back nine. I have played this course often over the years and this year there has been a significant decline in customer service.
Thank you for your review and feedback, Paul. We will take all of the information you have given us and address it internally, as making our golfers happy is our #1 priority. We do hope you decide to return in the future and give us another chance.
Not what it was
I was hesitant to book a round here given the recent closure then re-opening under new management. Having played this course many times over the years I had become used to a great golf experience. Sadly that is no longer the case.
The great layout of the course remains but the greens aren't what they were and neither are the sand traps. Pace of play for my mid afternoon tee time was slow. This can be traced to the fact that the course didn't have a chance to "open up" since they are way low on carts. We waited 25 minutes for ours.
Packfan35,
We appreciate you taking the time to give us your feedback, though we are sorry to learn you did not have a great round with us this time around. This is not the usual experience we provide our golfers. We hope you come back soon, so that we may exceed your expectations for next time.

Interesting Times at Hawthorne Valley
Let's start with the course itself. It's a classic Donald Ross design. Lots of thinking on the course to set up your second shot. Great hole selection and the course is in overall good shape (although a bit of TLC would take it to great shape). Front 9 are fairly flat but the back 9 is where things get fun with lots of elevation changes and not a flat lie to be found almost anywhere. Not for beginners.
The rest of the experience is interesting and worth knowing as it'll help explain things:
1.) the course used to be private and closed for a moment in winter 2016 due to financial issues. In the early springs a management contract was signed with Davey Golf to manage the course and reopen it for 2016.
2.) With that, the place still has a bare-bones feel. It used to be a grand scale country club but now just a shadow of itself. The bar area is really nice but that's about it for the clubhouse. The bathrooms are just hallway bathrooms, the pro shop seems like it's retrofitted into a former restaurant space, and not much else going on.
3.) One thing I found odd was the concession prices. Lots of prices were really good ($3 for a 16 oz Coors Light) but others were baffling ($5 for a hot dog).
4.) It's a cart only place. It's so walkable so hope that they change this thinking
5.) The course had no water coolers anywhere and there was no cart girl. So hopefully you brought your own water bottle. Why they can't invest in a few 5 gallon water coolers and stands is baffling. From what I can tell, coolers and stands start at around $200 so this is an easy upgrade.
6.) No bathrooms on the back 9. You've been warned.
7.) No range facilities. Looks like this has been an issue from day one as there's 5 mats at the corner of the parking lot but they're not in service. How can you open up a country club but not have a serviceable range?
8.) Bare bones staff so that means no starter and no ranger which leads to a bit of a mish-mash on the course. For instance on Sunday the pro-shop sent out a 2-some sandwiched between two 4-somes.
If you find a hot deal for this I'd grab it as even with all of the warts, the golf here is actually pretty good.
u00000920078,
Thank you for your in-depth review! We appreciate all of your feedback on each point, and will look into these as we strive to keep improving. We are glad you found value in the course. We look forward to your next visit soon!

Fun track
Fun course to play , but it looks like the course/ facility's have one foot in the grave . Course used to have good practice facility, but this is not the case anymore . Set up if course makes you think and is fun to play . I would play again , not bad for 34$ . I would like to see water to drink on the course.
