Hawthorne Valley Golf Club in Solon is a Donald Ross design that is considered one of the best public golf courses in Ohio. Since opening in 1926, the course has undergone several improvements over the years that have built upon its longstanding reputation. It became more challenging while maintaining its classic design. The layout features numerous strategically placed bunkers as well as water hazards on several holes. The greens and fairways are also kept in immaculate condition. The final trio of holes is the most challenging on the course. The 16th is a long par 4 with a sloped fairway, and there is a lake on the left side of the fairway on the 17th. Hawthorne Valley Golf Club's finishing hole is a tricky par 4 that doglegs left and plays uphill.

Hidden gem
Nice course that I had not heard of before I found it on Golfnow. Good course with some interesting holes. Challenging but fair with smaller but smooth greens. Definitely recommend you give this one a shot.
Hawthorne Valley
Great day at Hawthorne, as always the course was in phenominal shape ...
Great track only issue is they need some help w their bunkers, of course the 10 days of rain may have had something to do w that too ...
Plenty challenging and always a great test w perfect fairways n greens .
Nice Condition if you stay on the fairways
The course is in great condition, but you are going to spend a lot of time looking for your ball if you don't hit it on the fairways. Balls just sink into the rough and are very hard to find.
Simply Great
Great course . Very well maintained! Will be back!
Needs work
Played under wet conditions but the overall shape of the course was not great. The bunkers lacked sand and they were still working on edging and shaping up the bunkers. Tee boxes we're decent and the greens were in fairly good shape.
A Donald Ross Gem
Hawthorne is one of the best public courses in Ohio. It is a Donald Ross design that opened in 1924. The layout is not long but very demanding and tight--lots of doglegs. Small greens. Conditions are average to above average. The course is hilly and similar to Manakiki. Pace of Play was stop and go, but I still got done in about 4 hours as a single on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. The back 9 is not as tight and you can hit driver more. Regular rates are about $65 but you can get GolfNow Hot Deals for around $25 around noon most days!
Very narrow, small greens
This is definitely one of the tighter courses in the area no question about it. You really don't need to hit driver more than three or four times even off the back tees, definitely a course that rewards accuracy over distance. The greens here are some of the smallest I've ever seen. Overall an interesting course
Classic Donalkd Ross when you make a miostake it often costs more than one shot
It has the feel of a private club. The course is very well maintained. Definitely the best public course in NE Ohio
Best Golf Course I've Ever Been To
The moment I walked into the Pro Shop the staff treated me very well. Course conditions were perfect. The course layout was interesting. They even give you little pretzels, water and ice one a few holes. The putting greens, fairways and rough were cut thoughtfully and in great condition. They have a driving range with markers at many distance points and they also have a practice bunker! Seriously, this place is awesome.
Very nice!
The place is very nice . They even offer bagels and juice in the morning for free...which public other course offers that!!! Ice, water and pretzels on the course. Facility very clean. Holes very well kept....a must go.
Beautiful Course
This is a great old course that is in great condition this spring. Greens roll well, and overall the turf is beautiful pretty much everywhere. I have 2 complaints about this course. One, there are no stakes up yet, so finding yardage on a cart path only day is difficult. Secondly, they have a lot of old trees, some of which need to be taken care of a little better. More often than not on this course, you will be contending with the trees.
The trees natch the style of the course, however, as it places an emphasis on shot making. Many holes with doglegs, and plenty of places to lose your ball, will certainly keep you thinking all day long, and this course can really beat you down if you're not striking the ball well, or are making bad decisions.
The greens on this course are the smallest I have ever seen, and nearly each green is as such. Lots of break, and pretty fast in the summer.
This course is really growing on me. If you're up for a challenge, you're in for a treat on this awesome Donald Ross design.
nice holiday
everything about this course was good with the exception of the lack of yardage sticks .
we had to hunt for sprinkler heads....few and far between
The course has character.
The course has a variety of holes requiring different skills and strategies. Several holes require "home course knowledge" to know what shot to use as there are several blind tee shots and hidden greens.
small greens
greens tiny... I mean tiny! puts a nice premium on iron play and your short game.
Donald Ross Design must play
This is one of those courses that is a must play for everyone. It is challenging and you will use every club in the bag. I nice variety of holes with dog legs going both ways, up hills and down. All par threes will give you a different look and shot too. Course was in great shape and greens were rolling nice.
Thought I might catch a quick round, but....
While the course was pretty quiet on the front, there were numerous foursomes on the back. Couldn't pair up with anyone, only one group let me through and gave up after 15 holes.
Greens were OK but a bit raggedly looking. Course was wet the day before and they probably shouldn't have let people out. Oh, well.....
Very impressed!
After driving past this interesting looking course for years, just got the opportunity to play this week and was very impressed. Playing from the whites, the course requires shot making and not just length. The greens have nice breaks to them and are a fun challenge.
Will be back!!!!
Great Experience!
Hawthorne Valley is a course everyone in the area should play. Even with golfnow.com it was a little pricey for regular play but a couple of times a year it is worth the splurge. The course was in great shape. The greens were the best I have played all year. They had some speed to them. Most of the greens this year seem very slow even when dry. We never had to wait for a shot and finished in just under 3.5 hours. The layout is great. Many dog legs and interesting choices off the tees for the big hitters. Every time I play the course I learn something new.
Beautiful Design, Pretty Nice Course
This course isn't one of the best in the area, but it's quite good. The real strength of the course is its design. It's a Donald Ross design, which speaks for itself with regards to its greatness. Based on the number of places the name "Donald Ross" appears around the course and pro shop, it seems like the course management knows that it is the course's strongest asset, which it is. The design is great. It's not a long course, but it's narrow and it has a lot of strategically placed bunkers. Considering there were not a lot of bunkers on the course, I was surprised at how many times I ended up in the sand. The course is scenic and hilly, making great use of the terrain. The condition is pretty good as well. The bunkers and fairways were very well maintained, but the tee boxes and the greens were a bit beat up. However, they were still good. There are only two main negatives that I can think of: the price and the clubhouse. I think the course was a little overpriced. I paid $60 for 18 with a cart and I think that is a bit much. Also, I think that the clubhouse is in desperate need of some updating. It's pretty dated and tacky, and I think a little updating would go a long way. Overall, it's a nice course and it's worth playing, but it isn't one of the best in the Cleveland area.
Good Country Style Course
I heard about this course a lot.
But I didn't play there before because it's green fee is a little more than I want to spend.
When I went there, I could understand why they are.
It make me feel like I am in a private country club.
Their Staffs were kind and the preparations were a lot better than I could expect on any other courses.
The course condition was excellent.
Most of holes you can not see the green, but if you consider that as a challenge then it's okay.
Front Nine, we played less than 1 hour and 30 minutes, but back Nine took 2 and 1/2 hour.
I wished there was a ranger (usually I don't want to see a ranger) who could make a speedy play.
Maybe one slow played group was there yesterday.
