I got to the course a little early. The course was relatively empty, so I asked if I could tee off early. The person at the desk would not let me tee off earlier than the reserved tee time because he wanted me to tee off with a couple other people who booked through GolfNow.
The other two ended not showing up on time, so he finally let me tee off. Unfortunately, they treat people who reserve through GolfNow differently because they are not paying full price.
Worth playing..
Although its pretty short, the greens are setup smaller and hilly. The greens were in excellent conditions so it's worth the time.
Open layout so you get away with a few shorts here and there and there are a few tight holes.
Great Day for a walk!
Oak Knoll is an older course that is currently bank owned and up for sale. The course is in need of some loving care - fairways were mowed but full of ruts on the back nine. The rough were extremely tall (much of it over 12") and was impossible to find errant balls. The greens were mowed and trimmed well - but needed to me rolled to smooth them out some. Lots of unrepaired ball marks on most of the small greens. I played this course many years ago when it was a jewel - it could be again with some care.
I have played this course before and considering the rough winter we just had the course was in good shape
Good for a middle of the road golfer
Greens and fairways are in good shape. some trees were cut down and left on the course causing hazards. The staff was friendly and accommodating. I enjoyed the experience. I have golfed oak knoll for 20 years I would say it's in good shape right now and I like the direction it's going in.
Struggling course
Our expectations kept getting lowered hole by hole as we kept seeing poorly kept grounds. Large areas of brown non bagged grass clippings were both unsightly and a hassle to find balls. Greens were struggling. Fairways were lined with wheel ruts from heavy machinery driving on soggy grounds. Overall, needs a new grounds keeper or investment to keep it nicer.
This course was in terrible shape.
The course was very poorly maintained. Grass was so high I lost 2 balls in the middle of fairways. The course needs a lot of work. Very poor value for the price.
Pretty much unplayable right now
I actually quit the round after 5 holes it was so bad, unplayable and was not having any fun constantly looking for ball in the unkept fairways. Its not ready for season yet.
I've played this course numerous times last year, never really any issues. We've had an awful wet winter spring, and its clear this course doesn't handle that very well. First really nice day in months weather wise so went out to play. Should've waited.
Course was like a swamp. Fairways were not cut very nice, tons of dead grass in the middle of fairways, so even a perfect shot would get lost in the dead grass. And missing fairway was even worse, rough was awful. Ground just soggy and squishy.at times felt like walking into swamp.
I've never before walked out of a round. Had to do that today. Frustrating to say the least. Players beware, course needs a good month of no rain to recover I'd guess. Play at your own risk.
Below average conditions
The putting green was closed. The greats were not rolled or cut and many bare spots. The fairways were in pretty good shape and the course was very empty. Overall not a great experience, however the course is not a bad one just not very well maintained compared to others in the area.
This course is a mature course
Enjoy playing here! Staff is friendly and helpful. Course is well maintained and in good shape. Maturity shows up in the trees all over the course. I will definitely return to this course often!
Nice open fairways
Really enjoyed Oak Knoll. Nice wide fairways that allow you to work on your game, instead of fighting to course layout. Fairways were in good shape, just a few areas of hard pan. A few of the greens had some grass issues, but still rolled true. A good experience and we will be back.
Pleasant course
They are working hard on the course and it shows. Fairways and greens in good condition. Not quite up to the standards of the best courses in the area, but well worth playing. Very nice, brand new electric carts. My only frustration has been the flow of play. I have played four times in the last few weeks using a golf now "hot deal". Three of the times I was the only one who signed up, so they put me out by myself. I prefer to play with other people in general, but all three times I rapidly caught up to groups in front of me. It was then either wait forever, or try to jump ahead and come back later and play the missed holes. This is not the fault of the course, just an observation of mid-week play in Salem.
Best Shape for this charming course in years
I have been golfing here since 2000 and this was the best shape this course has almost ever been in. They are keeping the watering and cutting up very well. The greens were very nice and putted very true, the past they have not always been cared for. They have a new crew running the show and they are on top of it. The course has new golf carts which was well over due and they are a very nice addition. I am sorry to say but this trip we did not eat in the restaurant and bar but the house is trying to build this back up some with fresh new staff and helpful folks. If you have played here in the past and were disappointed please give it another shot. The team is working very hard to bring this wonderful country gem back to a course worthy of your hard earned dollars. Good job current staff members.
Great Course
Staff always helpful working hard to improve and maintain this course
Extremely slow...indifferent staff
Using GolfNow I was put behind a scramble tournament that had 5-6 players per team. Several teams had beginners. I had a 10-15 wait on every tee box. I informed a course marshal who did absolutely nothing. It was near 100 degree heat, yet no drinks cart. All this for $34.00 walking. Needless to say, I won't be back.
Greens Not up to Par
In my opinion the greens have not yet recovered from the wet winter yet. But besides this still one of my favorite courses.
Should be closed for winter
I knew the course would be wet with the type of weather we've had this winter, but this course shouldn't be open for another month or two. The majority of the fairways are unplayable because of standing water and if you get in the rough you better have hip waders on. Even the tee boxes aren't really playable. I tried to play through it and find places to hit that weren't water logged, but I skipped 3 holes and walked off. Save your money, go to the driving range, and come back in May.
Never go back!
This course was totally unplayable. It was a swamp and some of the fairways were so wet they could not mow them and have not been mowed in a long time. Lost multiple balls in the fairway due to plugging beneath the surface or areas that were 6 to 8 inches long. First cut of ruff was 8 to 10 inches of grass laying down due to water. Miss the fairway and your ball was gone.
There was no mention of the course conditions, the only comment by staff was to see if we had a cell phone incase we got the cart stuck in the mud they could come pull us out.
The bunkers on the back were un groomed and full of weeds. This truly was the worst coarse I have played at age 59. We quit on 15 and went in. I guess the mud and grass slung down the side of the carts that were lined up at the first tee should have been a clue. We never made a mark on our score card it was that bad.
Clubhouse service, well lets say the bartender let us know that he was the cook, waiter and the bartender. Service, not so good. This place is in serious trouble and Golf now should remove it from their app. We only saw 3 other golfers on the course the whole day.
