Disappointing Revisit
This is my favorite layout on Staten Island. I haven't played here in a couple of years so I decided to give it a go today. Weather was 89* and sunny.
Front desk folks are very good, professional and friendly. Best part of the round.
1st Tee: Course was full with a steady of players. I was a single and manager to get in line with two other gents. A fourth showed up and we played together with three carts. Very disorganized first tee. Every group had three or more carts. Inefficient use of resources and assets.
Pace of play: A lot of what I would call "Choppers" out in the beautiful weather. A lot of Seniors playing also. Those groups hate losing balls so they search every nook and cranny looking for that $1.50 Top Flite causing a long wait between shots. Round from 1st tee check in to finish was 5 hours, 20 minutes.
Course condition: Tees were not mowed and turf was sparse. Looking around, there are few greens that get sufficient light to support proper turf growth. Lots of crab grass, sand and bare spots on the tees. Fairways had lots of turf of various sorts but were in need of mowing. Rough was plush and someone was mowing. Greens were in fact green. Very slow and again not much speed. Don't suspect the mower heights were set for medium to fast greens.
Final thoughts: New carts were a big plus. Again, today was hot and humid and there was not a drop of water anywhere on the course. You bought bottled beverages at the first tee before you teed off or when you made the turn. Nobody in their right mind would venture to drink from the two sketchy moldy and unclean fountains if you could remember where they were.
This is a city owned, privately operated concession. While I love the layout, it is geared for the recreational golfer and senior citizen. If you want to play real golf and enjoy your efforts, look elsewhere.
Waiting for Inprovement
Well some work is being done on the course. Typical maintenance like sheeting tea boxes and cleaning up sand traps do not seem to even be attempted. This could be a very nice course given a little TLC and attention. Hopefully the new owners will take it seriously because American Golf has it in the last 10 years.
Wait to play
The course is in rough shape, I snagged a tee off special but at full price the course is simply not worth it. I do see they are working on some tees, but the course needs many weeks of good weather to start the grass growing. Greens have a ridiculous amount of top dressing, combined with the typical Neanderthals who never fix ball marks and putting is at best a crap shoot. I feel South Shore has the most character of any Staten Island course, but I would stay away for the time being.
It's a great course. Needs a little work especially on the greens & bunkers. To be fair it's early in the season to be too critical.
Tee times
My group, usually 3 or 4 players, plays here almost every Saturday year round. I and a friend come from Brooklyn while my brother travels in from NJ. I find it annoying and irritating that I can't book the following Saturday at the club house. How much of an inconvenience is it for the person in the pro shop. to make the tee time?
Yikes
Got a hot deal for $35 and might have overpaid after seeing this dog track. Tee boxes torn to shreds, fairways and rough was so-so, bunkers were atrocious, and greens were the worst I’ve seen in a couple years now. It felt like when you putt on aerated greens. Dirt / sand patches in the middle made it laughable.
We were just grabbing a quick round after work on a Friday since a family member worked in Staten Island and it’d take a lot for me to go back.
Need better management
The course itself is good for what it is. Decently fun hole layouts. The management was the issue. When you get there you feel like nobody works there. There was no starter so people where just walking up to the tee box and going, regardless of tee time. The pace of play was really not great. A combination of slow walkers and lack of authority from the starter resulted in a almost 6 hour round (on a short course). I think with better management and organization the course would be great.
Bad and getting worse
The place is a dump! I’ve been coming here for decades and this is the worst it has ever been. Several Unplayable greens and the whole course is not being maintained or cared for properly. On top of this, this is the company that took over this year and abruptly ended club membership. Now it’s an over priced, user unfriendly dump. Attendance is fallen way off as well. Just poor management all around by this group. Offer a new club membership to Staten Island residents and fix the darn course.
Slow
Course so slow, 3 tee time out and 5 hour round of golf. At $40 it’s overpriced they need people on the course to get groups moving along
For the price, wish it was better
One thing for sure is that getting rid of the memberships at this location has affected everyone going to this course. Another negative feedback is $20.00 per person for cart is absurd. A few greens were in terrible shape which affected getting better scores. Bunkers are always a nightmare, feels like you are swinging off concrete while in there. I know it’s a round in March but this is nothing new from this course.
Could not complete the round
1st 10 were ok the there were young kids all over the place. There was an 8some in front of me and a 6some in front of them. I walked back to the front 9 and there were groups of 6+ on most of the holes so I left. There was no Ranger or anyone to break them up or speed them up. Pretty poor. It was such a nice day to go and then....Poof!
Not worth the price when you can't complete the round.
I would not recommend anybody to play in Staten Island. They charge $22 for a cot. It is the first week of February. That is a big rip off. Three of the holes, a goose poop all over it.
