The Club At Shadow Lakes
About
The Club at Shadow Lakes sprawls across lush, rolling hills sprinkled with pristine woodlands. Formerly a private golf club, Shadow Lakes is now public and open year-round though the club still has a membership who gets preferred tee times. The golf course is challenging with not only the trees and hills coming into play, but water hazards and strategically placed sand traps as well. It is a layout that rewards accuracy off the tees over distance. Golfers will have to strategize and shape their shots in a variety of ways on this tough golf course. The ninth is one of the most memorable holes at Shadow Lakes. This seemingly easy par 4 is tougher than it looks, requiring a downhill layup and then a second shot that plays across a pond to the uphill green.

Solid Former Private Course
Course was actually built in two phases. The original 9 holes were built in 20s and the second 9 was built in the 70s. Original 9 plays on the better terrain and Had the better greens. The newer 9 is on the flatter land and the greens are much more bland.
Worth a play if in the area, but not worth going out of your way to play.
not happy never going back
Payed full price for a Sunday afternoon. The fairways hadn't been cut in over a week. The rough hadn't been cut in over two weeks. The course was dry so the only excuse for not cutting the grass is they didn't care.We spent your lintier round trying to find balls in the high grass. We weren't the only ones having this problem because we kept finding other peoples balls that were lost. The course had a general unkempt look about it. Weeds growing up around tee boxes around stone walls .The hole course said to me we don't care pay full price anyway.
Great Experience in a Country Club Atmosphere
Overall a very enjoyable experience! Interesting layout, challenging but fair. Some beautiful holes. I recommend highly.
Great Course
Shadow Lakes was in excellent condition after having 2 inches of rain previous night, greens were in excellent shape ran true ans fast would reccomend a must play
Shadow Lakes in August post rain
Course didn't drain well, not an immense amount of rain but fairways were sloshy. Overall course was in less than average condition, a slight disappointment
Nice Course
Staff was very friendly, pace of play was great 3:15 for our twosome, and the course was in great shape and fun to play.
beautiful course
The course is well laid out and in perfect condition. Fairways are shaped and kept well, rough is kept in good condition. Trees and water come into play on numerous holes but are mostly to the side and not in line with the target. The course had some problems with standing water and mud in the spring, but that has been cleared up since then and the course is now plush. We played the senior tees, which are fairly short but still challenging. I highly recommend this course.
I'd play it again
My first trip to the course. The course was in good shape. Friendly staff. Pace of play was excellent. Started at 1pm and we were done in 3 hours.
very nice
Nice conditions, beautiful greens, very flat course for western PA. Tree lined fairways are tight but open. Mature trees eat up your balls so I had to punch under a few times. Nice electric carts. Alot of sand traps but they were in great condition. Would play here again for sure :-)
Great hidden gem
The course was exceptionally well maintained, country club quality greens and fairways. The layout was fair--a mix of challenging and scoring holes. And an abundance of level fairways--not always easy to find in western Pa.. The staff was professional and friendly. A real hidden gem as a private course now available to the public. A nice new option for western pa golfers who rotate through the better public courses in the the summer. Don't know about weekends, which I imagine might get congested, but great course and deal, especially on weekdays.
boom
great challenging course. very well kept. great staff/
Great golf experience.
OUTSTANDING COURSE, I REALLY ENJOYED THE DIVERSE SETTING, 2 AND 9 CAN BE REACHED IF YOUR A BIG HITTER, PAR 3'S ARE CHALLENGING , ESPECIALLY 215 YD NO.10. WATER AND BUNKERS IN PLAY MOST OF THE DAY, DEMANDING GOOD SHOTS, BUT VERY ENJOYABLE TO PLAY EVEN FOR A NOVICE. I MET MATT IN THE PRO SHOP, FROM THE START HE WELCOMED US AND HIS STAFF WAS OUTSTANDING. DEFINITELY PLAY THIS COURSE, YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!
Very pleasant surprise after difficult weather
This course was once a local country club and still maintains some of those amenities unlike other many former clubs. My only other visit was in off season. Today was remarkably different. Friendly greeting in lot to take my bag to a cart. Very easy and welcoming check-in. Advised for path only due to extensive rainfall prior. Course held up extremely well, particularly greens. A very enjoyable round and will no doubt return and bring friends.
The Golf Pro Very Mean
The golf Pro at this course was very rude. He came out and blamed us for driving up a hill and leaving marks, when the hole was down hill. We stayed on the cart path the whole time! I will never play there again.
Pleasantly surprised
Based on what I was told the course looked like a year ago, we were pleasantly surprised. It was in great shape for this late in the season. You can tell they are working at upgrading their maintenance. Nice facilities and staff.
Great greens, lots of bunkers, old school layout, terrific staff.
We started playing Shadow Lakes a few years ago. It quickly rose up the ranks to one of our favorite tracks.
The conditions are excellent. There are always maintenance guys mowing, blowing raking or rolling something.
Played from the men's tees this course is a challenge, played from the tips, it's a beast.
While good drives will give you a perfect lie in the manicured fairways, errant tee shots will end up in a bunker, behind a tree, or at the bottom of one of the many beautiful lakes.
The true-rolling greens are large, but well protected by bunkers. You can be on in regulation and still walk off with a bogey due to the distance and slopes of many putts. Your green reading ability will be put to the test as subtle breaks are prevalent. Get above some of the holes and you'll be hoping for a 3 putt!
The pace of play is usually great. We play Saturday mornings and are usually done in less than 4 hours. Once in a while you'll get behind some boobs who have no pace of play clue but, unfortunately you'll see them everywhere.
The par 3's are a test of your long irons. I've used everything from a 6 iron to a driver on the tenth hole.
The par 4's are about as varied as golf holes can get. Some require grip it and rip it tee shots, while others are long iron placement shots. Lots of bunkers, lots of trees, lots of fun!
Par 5's: Although at one time or another I've birdied all of them, I have never reached any of the par fives in two shots. (YMMV) I've been close, but no cigar. Lay up to a good number on your second shot and you'll finally hit a full wedge at this golf course.
Other: Two large putting greens and a driving range are right there for your warm ups. Snacks and beverages at the turn either in the bar (smoking hot bartender), or at the seasonal snack shack, beautiful, clean restrooms. Although not golf related, there is a beautiful restaurant and a banquet hall upstairs. The restaurant food and service is great
Location: Shadow lakes is west of Pittsburgh about 15 minutes from the Greater Pittsburgh airport. It's 2 minutes off the Aliquippa exit. Easy in, easy out.
Staff: Extremely friendly and accommodating. The guys in the pro shop are knowledgeable and efficient. You can get from the parking lot to the first tee of in under 3 minutes (I've done it). It's a privately owned course run by the Maggs family. It's nice to be able to deal directly with the owner for outings and events.
Shadow lakes is really one of the best kept secrets in the Pittsburgh golf arena. If you live in the Western Pennsylvania/Eastern Ohio market and haven't played this course, you're missing out. If your visiting Pittsburgh, it's close enough to the airport to sneak in a round during a long layover!
