Fairways?
So I don't know if all the rain the previous week had anything to do with it, but most of the "fairways" were more like the first cut of rough at a lot of courses. The rough was 2-3" in most areas but it was not uncommon to see it higher than that. Greens were in good shape.
I was disappointed in the overall conditions as was the twosome that was playing with us.
Excellent
Staff very friendly and helpful. Starter was very knowledgeable and friendly. Gentleman at register super nice. Course was packed and still played in only 4 and a half hours. Greens were fabulous especially for this time of year. AA plus..
Good Saturday made better
I hadn't touched a club since October 2017. Chosing where to play your first round can set the moral tone for the rest of the year. IRON LAKE had a Hot Deal and I snapped it up. Got partially there and realized I left my golf shoes back home. Needless to say my planned chipping and putting session flew out the window. I called the club-No Answer - OMG must be packed and I'm going to miss my tee time. Left an message and hustled to the course. The Pro shop was super accommodating - got out with minimum delay. There is plenty of challenge here for the first round of the year. Enjoyed it in-spite of a 5-some that I ran into. Definitely part of the rotation.
An interesting course
I've played Iron Lakes a couple times before, with the most recent being 12/1/17. Considering the time of year, the course was in decent shape. We had to play from the "winter tees" but we understood the reasoning and it didn't detract from the round. The greens were in nice shape and the bunkers were better than expected. The fairways were decent and the rough playable. The carts (electric) worked but are aging. We were able to have a drink in the restaurant afterward and were happy with the staff and selection.
Good time
The course is in great shape with some challenges that added to the enjoyment. The course wasn't crowded which made for a relatively quick round (about 3 hours). Hitting into the rough made it an adventure finding the ball so I guess the moral there is don't hit into the rough. Nice place and the staff were friendly. Worth the time to give it a play.
Interesting course
Nice layout challenging holes. The bunkers need sand. Staff was friendly. Greens were in great shape.
Area return surprise
First time playing this course while returning from Arizona for a high school reunion my brother recommended this course. Rough had its challenges but if you hit fairways there wasn't much to hitting greens, the greens were rolled to a moderate speed without much slope, and easy to read. Elevated tee boxes and the mature tree, the water holes were a very nice fit for this course lay out. We had a very nice day playing this course you'll find it to be rewarding as well.
Fun tines
Played for the second time this year. Greens we're firmer than I remember with more false fronts I enjoyed discovering additional neuances this course offers. Staff was super friendly.
Terrible Experience - Not family friendly
On a Sunday evening as a family we decided to take our two year old with us for 9 holes. There was no one at the course...it was absolutely empty on the front nine except for one walker. Before we even entered the Pro Shop a gentlemen working comes out of the door and states "sorry to say you cant play with riders" and I responded what do you mean I will pay for them to ride. He said "these are the owners rules and you cant play". After much back and forth I decided to leave extremely disappointed. I am appalled by this attitude as a 32 year old young professional who understands that golf courses are closing all over the country and we are trying to grow this game. I was trying to expose my family to this great game and am a scratch golfer that understands certain rules and would never bring my family out during a busy time of day and would play nine holes in an hour and a half. The fact that this golf course wouldn't allow us as a family to enjoy the game of golf is disgusting. I cannot comprehend what this issue would have been with us riding 9 holes while nobody was on the course.
I will never play here again and hope to spread the word of how this establishment is operating. We will see how long they stay in business if they don't allow us to expose the next generation to their course or the game. Allentown municipal allows you to play and pay a small fee for insurance purposes for riders, which I will gladly pay and believe we should pay. Cheers to those who are focused on the next generation, the play 9 initiative, and everything the USGA and PGA are doing to grow the game and get families involved. Boo to the gentlemen running this place. Let's all make sure we put our best foot forward to bring the game back and not see another course close!
Golf at Iron Lakes
I always played this course at least once a year over twenty years ago. On my last visit to PA I decided to play the course since it changed ownership years ago. I was pleased to see the course in very good condition, much better then when we played it in the past. The Club Pro was very friendly and even offered me a free bottle of water from the cooler.
Nice course with recent upgrades make a vast improvement. Old original nine holes are short. The "newer" nine holes are much more difficult.
Like most public courses, the sand traps are
