The management here sucks
The people that run this place have no idea how to run a golf course. lots of bugs, muddy bunkers, no starter, rude staff.
Fun Round on an Old Favorite
This was the first time in years that I played this course which was one of my most frequently played courses in my first 25 years of golf. There have only been a few changes and I would say they were mostly for the better. The course from tee to green was in good shape. Other than the greens it was a little soft due to abundant rain in the area. The greens were a bit hard and difficult to hold, at least for this group of seniors. Pace of play was good though we were relatively slow due to frequent ball searching. Seemed like we were the only foursome on the course. We let several twosomes play through. Blustery conditions aside, it was a fun round played with old friends on an old friend.
Sporty Track in E-PA
Came as a single and was paired with another player. I usually defer to my playing partner which tees to play from. He suggested the Tips and I agreed, though reluctantly, since many folks play from tees inappropriate to their skill level. Iron Lakes is not long but has many mature trees guarding the fairway and off the 1st tee my new companion was off in the trees on the right. He hit a great recovery shot to the green and we were off! We both played under 80s golf though I made the only couple of birdies on the round. Even with the wind howling at times, we had a lot of fun. The management decided to let out 2-somes all day and we played the course in under 4 hours. Greens were great as was the condition of the entire course.
Course was nice, leagues got in the way
I booked a 1:52 tee time on golf now for $17 so I can't complain about the price for the course. The condition of the course was great. The part that was really frustrating was that when my group finished on the 9th hole, there was a line of carts on hole 10. Leagues go off the front and back 9's from 4-5:30 every weekday. In hindsight, that has to be the reason the tee time was so cheap, but it would have been nice to know that you need to make the turn in under 2 hours to play a full round.
Iron Lakes was a Steal
Iron Lakes CC is a fun and challenging track. Good variety of long and short holes, with some dog-legs, elevation changes, traps and water. Many of the greens have some serious rolls.
The back tees (blue) were only 6,000+ yards but had a 127 slope, which I think was deserved.
Cart paths are pretty rough.
My $17 Hot Deal was a steal.
A Great Local "Go To" with some Issues
Iron Lakes (formerly Twin Ponds which reference the two par 3's with water separating the tees and the greens) is a course that has a variety of layouts and some elevation changes.
PROS
Short par 4 that can be driven but with huge risk/reward (#17)? Got it. Long par 4's that leave more than an 8 iron in? Sure. A 90 degree dogleg right par 5? Uh huh. I enjoy playing here, the fairways are wide enough to be forgiving but errant shots could play into the trees that are placed in the rough but are recoverable. The course is in overall good shape with how much it is played.
CONS
Some of the bunkers are in complete disrepair and the cart paths in some areas are disintegrating. Another complaint is that the water Igloos around the course were empty and were far and few between. No halfway house, just a brick shed with two vending machines. Pace of play can be an issue since the course likes to pack 'em in.
FINAL
Despite the above CONS, I continue to come back due to price, staff friendliness and the variety the course offers. I hope that some money is pumped back into improving the course and facilities so it can be an even better experience.
Iron Lakes.
Fun drives, get to fade this one draw that one. Straight away bomb it. Fun water hazards. Every course needs water hazards.
Worth it for $30 or less
Very nice course and decently manicured. Greens were a touch hard but rolled true. Front nine is short but the layout is interesting enough to give you different approach shots. Back nine is a little longer because of water hazards and doglegs off the tee. Three of four par threes are relatively the same yardage. Pro shop is extremely friendly. Overall a nice course if you get a reasonable price.
Excellent Course
This was my 3rd time playing the course but the first time playing it in season. The course was in excellent condition. A very interesting course with fun layouts. 17 & 18 are especially enjoyable holes with challenging hazards to navigate. The staff was super friendly. Can;t wait to go back!
Early in the season
No bad , but early in the season . Needs a couple of weeks of warm weather.
Worth your time. I'll be back soon...
I played Iron Lakes on a very windy March afternoon, enroute home to Binghamton NY, from Atlantic City. The course was very lightly trafficked and I was hitting the ball reasonably well, so I was able to get around in 2 hours and 15 mins for (18 holes!).....This was due in part, as well, to the tees being moved forward, as they prepped the formal tee boxes for the upcoming season. I only encountered one temporary green, however. The design of the course is interesting and challenging, with a lot of hills and valleys. There is a pretty stream that winds through the back 9 and culminates in a large pond on the final hole, which is a longish par 3 over water. There's also an island green which incorporates the stream (#16) and it's arguably the course's most spectacular hole. I had played here once before, several years ago, and can say that things appear to have improved since then. That said, the pro shop/clubhouse is a bit underwhelming. The staff, however, were cordial and the carts (surprisingly electric) were aging, but reasonably well maintained. There is a restaurant on site, but I'm not sure it was open yet and I didn't have time to check it out. I plan on returning in April to give it another go.
VERY NICE COURSE
This course is pretty much in the eastern center part of Pennsylvania. Having said that, it's the middle of winter here. We had a three day warm spell so " GO PLAY ".
The course was in fantastic shape, as though it was the middle of May. I couldn't get over the conditions of the greens, they were actually green. I could go on and on but won't. Just in a word, FANTASTIC, for February. The man behind the counter is a pro at customer service. I'm sorry that I didn't get his name, he deserves a mention.
Great course for the money
Iron Lakes is a fairly challenging course, but can be scored well with fairway shots. Water comes into play on 5 of the holes. Greens are always in good shape. The Grill Room is a great place to have a beer & get some good food after a round. Usually open year-round, weather permitting.
Very Satisfied
I was most impressed with the condition of the course considering all the heat and how dry it has been through out the valley. Fairways and greens were in great shape. Best I have seen the greens. I have not played here in quite a long time and I really surprised . They are doing something right.
Highly recommend
I really enjoyed playing at the course and my gosh have I improved. I hit it ove the water! The first 20 years are pracitce!!!!
