Fair price and layout
This golf course has no amenities to speak of like snacks etc it's just an unusual course to get a round of golf in at. I play this course occasionally on the weekends to avoid the high dollar and high volume of traffic of most other courses. The layout for the most part is fair and flows well and with many unique or unusual holes as well. Number 8 is the exception. A leaning fairway with OB on the right you could find if you try to keep your shot from the high slopes left. If you miss the green, which you can't see over the crest of a hill anyway, it will roll down the steep bank or be out of bounds right. Not really a golf hole at all to be honest. The rest of the course is situated near a lake with several holes that view it or are next to it. The layout is one that makes me wonder if the course was not once an upscale course. It's got the length and has (now empty) sand traps in all the expected locations but there is next to no money being put into it's care and maintenance. No sand in any trap or bunker. Some greens can be as much hard dirt as grass on some visits but the remnants of the type grass used can be seen and was probably well maintained decades ago? Nowadays some of the greens are as bad as it gets. The course is family owned I think perhaps left to a wife or someone who cannot or does not know how to maintain it but wants to keep it running. The clubhouse and parking lot are in similarly unkept but usable shape. The biggest drawback for me are the carts which are probably taking up any and all maintainance efforts that might be happening here. They are in sad shape for sure. So far it may sound like I'm trying to tell prospective golfers to stay away and for my own selfish reasons that would be ok to keep the pace of play good but for myself I enjoy the course. It has some beauty and a challenging layout with a set price of $25 all day everyday. So, if you just care about getting some golfing practice in that won't break the bank then an occasional round of golf on this interesting course would fit the bill. They have no driving range either btw but no worries just hit extra shots while on the course when time permits. For the entrepreneurs out there this course has potential and I expect will one day be sold as many in the country have done the last couple decades or so. It would be ideal for a housing development along the lake or better yet keep it as a golf course and restore it to what I think it probably once was, a high end track, based on the remnants of the layout.
Terrible Layout
This course needs to be blown up! The greens have too much slope and need redone. Number 4 may be the worst golf hole that I have ever seen!
Western PA Golf
This is a classic Western PA golf course. Uphill lies, blind uphill shots, sloped greens. Check all of the above. You cannot walk this course because it is too hilly and crossed a road four times.
Greens were lightning fast but rolling true. Bunkers are in excellent shape and the fairways are very firm.
A hidden challenge
They lay out if this course is extremely difficult with so many rolling hills and valleys. Bunkers, high grasses, creeks and ponds are placed very strategically as to where they would anticipate a shot to land, very well thought out course. Have an off shot, you're in for a challenge testing your true skill. The first 4 holes are some of the more challegining in my opinion. Greens roll fast with plenty of breaks and fairways are hard allowing for added roll. Course in very nice shape and very well maintained.
Very comparable to other top notch course in the Pittsburgh area, maybe even better than some highly rated courses the PGA has used. I bet typical player shoots 4 to 6 strokes over your typical handicap. Give it a try and see for yourself, you wont br disappointed.
Snails Pace
This course is in excellent shape , greens are fast and fairways are firm. The layout is poor because of the hilly terrain , some shots are impossible ! The pace of play was atrocious , no one out to ranger and had to wait on every shot. Some greens are impossible ,numbers 17 and 18 are a joke , both need redone.
