Work in progress
Played alone 1st one on the course. You can see it's well manicured, but needs continued improvement. Burn out spots on collars and some fairways. Some crab grass in the fairways. Greens in good condition but slow, even accounting for morning dew. All employees I encountered were very friendly and helpful. All facilities were clean and bright. Did not have any food or beverage. An enjoyable enough round of golf and challenging enough that I will go back . We'll see if improvement is continued. Worth the fee for a senior on weekday.
Wonderful views and course layout
Worth the drive to play this course. Great fun to play.
Awesome course. Beautiful, well kept landscaping
Front nine went fast. Had a complete logjam on the back nine. The 18th was the only bad hole, with some dead spots and chewed up turf.
Nice views!
This course is growing on me. I love the views and privacy of this little gem. The greens have been manicured very well but sometimes the fairways are not cut and the rough is just 'tough.'
Overall, other than the 9th hole, I really like this course. It is fairly easy and straightforward, but a fun treat, and some par 4-s are difficult to par, unless you can drop it on the green from 160 out without rolling off! Has a lot of potential to be a great course with some vision.
Dnt play late
was disappointed that golfers were allowed to play in tank tops.
No facilities opened after 5p m-my partner was a female -not good--no marshal, single in front playing 3 balls-held us a 2 ball up all day...
what a joke for a holiday
Nice course
Course was in excellent shape, had some nice distance from the blues. Pace was excellent. I highly recommend playing a round at the hawk!
In great condition.
Tee boxes need some work, fairways and greens are very good. Challenging but not hard. Great staff.
Love the Hawk
Hawk Valley has been my list of go to places for an enjoyable round. Nice conditions, plenty of challenges.
Good Course, Bizarre Patrons
Made the drive out to Hawk Valley from the Philadelphia area with my wife and buddy. This was our first time playing the Hawk. We got a great deal from Golfnow for a Sunday afternoon time so it was worth the hour ride to give it a shot. We had an interesting experience.
The course was a bit of a ways of the PA turnpike and is strangely placed in the middle of PA farmland. The smell of manure followed us through the round. I didn't mind it, but some might. As we arrived, there was a single younger kid running the course. We were told to load up and go and that we were on the tee. It seemed to be a first come first serve tee off because as we were gearing up some other guys hurried and zoomed right in front of us at the first tee. We got stuck behind a couple two somes which made for a bit of a slow start. The fairways played pretty well and the greens were very soft but were in good shape. The rough was not overly thick so you could recover if you miss the short stuff. There were guys fishing off the 6th tee box which made for an awkward tee shot on that particular hole. Played the front in 2 hours, which was expected for a weekend.
The back nine was where things really turned interesting. We teed off on the tenth hole only to find a group of 5 golfers suddenly in front of us. We played shot to shot for much of the back nine and they would not allow us to play through even though there was no one was in front of them. We would have skipped them but had never played the course before and wanted to play the course in its entirety. Made for an extremely trying golf experience. It came to a head on the par five 15th hole. They had just cleared the green and were dancing next to the hole for a minute or two. My guess is they were drunk or just being ignorant because they knew we were wanting to play through. My buddy let go his 5 wood from about 235 and it smashed down into the back of one of their carts. Clearly his fault for hitting into them but it made for an interesting interaction. One of the five proceeded to pick up his ball and drive it back to us 235 yards and threw the ball at him before driving off. The next few holes were extremely awkward considering that experience and they were sure to play the next few holes exceptionally slow. That combined with a woman walking her dog across the par three 17th fairway made for just an all out strange experience. The group of five eventually drove back to the 12th tee after playing the 17th hole to replay holes for free. No ranger present so they were obviously getting their money's worth and more. My guess is they are regulars that do this kind of thing quite often.
Overall, the course itself was your standard public track. No really memorable holes. The par four 9th has a nice approach shot over a small pond into a large green but other than that, much of the holes are straightaway. Some tight fairways but plenty are generous and wide open. For the price we got, we will probably head back out at some point to give the place another shot. Just beware if you are playing that the locals that play here can be a bit wonky.
Hawk Valley
Enjoyed the course, friendly staff, casual playing atmosphere (not too uptight). Very nice experience. Will return!
you won, be disappointed
I have been playing this course since the mid 1970, so it has gone through many different owners even the plans to bury it under a housing development. This plan could still happen but right now it's in great shape. They have made so many improvements to make the course more playable. Stopped for a an cheeseburger and fries turns out great and reasonably priced. Good menu from an array of sandwiches to your after nine hole hot dog $2.00.
This course has a nice mix in hole difficulty
Greens had been rolled and were fast the day we played. There was a lot of construction around the course (cart paths) and a fair number of greens had issues around the collars. Great course layout with wide fairways and monster size greens overall.
Excellent Course
I decided to give Hawk Valley a shot after reading other positive reviews and it did not disappoint at all. It was one of the best courses I've play so far. Course was in great condition for being October and the staff could not have been more friendly. I will definitely take the drive back out there again.
what a value !
It had been 10 years since I last played Hawk Valley and we got an amazing 19 dollar rate for a Saturday morning thanks to golfnow.com, so we took the hour drive from Philly to try it out.. I had read many positive reviews of the course and after playing here, I am in agreement..
The course was in very good condition and the fairways were firm and it made for good roll on tee shots. The greens held a well struck approach shot and putted true.. The starter said the greens were playing slower than usual but I thought they were of pretty decent speed.. The greens have plenty of slope to them and you must be under the pin to score well..
The setting for the course is nice and in a quiet area .Fall golf will be just beautiful here and I plan on going back for some here. The par 5's are all reachable in 2 for a good player and there are plenty of birdie opportunities on other holes too.. The course has plenty of sand traps which are in good shape and you can roll the ball up to most greens..
All in all for a course in its price range, Hawk Valley is a fantastic bargain and a pleasure to play.
Hawk is on the comeback!
I have always loved the challenge of Hawk's putting greens and club selection important fairways. Driver is not always the best choice on this course.
The new owners have been putting a huge effort into the course and it is paying off! Go Play!
discouraged
Didn't play, when we got there carts were lined up 6 deep, wasn't going to wait hour to tee off. looks like someone overbooked, went to foxchase in Denver instead.
Great Golf at Bargain Price
The Hawk is local course (to me) and I've played it on and off for over 30 years. Right now, the course in probably the best condition I've seen. We've had a cool rainy summer so far, and this course is very lush for August in the northeast.
Their are 4 sets of tees making the course playable for beginners and high handicaps, yet challenging for single-digit handicaps. Lots of trees decorate the course, but are, for the most part, trimmed out, so that errant shots can be found and kept in play.
Hidden Gem
Course is in the middle of Lancaster Cpunty, a bit out of the way. Course is in good shape and they are obviously working hard to make it even better. Played here twice in under 3 hours and love it
Nice course with open fairways
I was pleasantly surprised. This course was a lot of fun. Greens were fairly quick, but the fairways were wide and open, perfect for hitting my new driver that I have yet to master.
Money well spent
The owners have put a lot of money into this course over the last few years and it shows. Great condition and challenging enough to keep me thinking. Friendly staff and cold beer. Very fair price.
