Not worth the $ today
Course is Ross so good character. But not well conditioned and aerated greens. I got $50 worth of golf for $86.
Hard to justify the $$
Was told only when we showed up to play that the greens had been aerated the week prior, so their rate was cut in half to $84 per person. Not sure it is worth the price. Disappointed with the tee boxes, and the greens were challenging (as they would always be with any areified course). Hard to accept that this course is one of the "top resort courses in NC."
Nice, picturesque course to play
I had a family member from California who had never been to our place before, want to play a very nice course. We arrived and found the greens were sandy and very bad to putt since parts of the greens had more sand in places which made the speed different on each green. I really like this course normally, but the price was too high for the condition of the greens. This is a picturesque course, but the price of $130 to play is too high for the local golfer. This course should have a local fee like Las Vegas, Orlando, Williamsburg and Palm Desert, California. The cart persons were very nice. We love to play this course and recommend visitors to enjoy a gorgeous course with lush fairways. Hole #4 needs to make it a 5 par for seniors like me who drives the ball 200 +/- yards and take 3 shots to reach the green from the senior tee box.
Very nice course
Played very early in the season(March). I would assume it will be absolutely beautiful when everything is in full bloom. May be a bit short for some ling hitters but still fun to play. Staff was great.
Would definitely play again if in the area.
Fun Donald Ross Course.
The course was in great shape for this time of year. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. It's definitely a must play if you are visiting the Asheville area.
This course was very scenic
My friend and I enjoyed the speed of the greens, but you had to make sure you left your approach shot below the hole or you are 3 putting. We found the players ahead of us were kind enough to allow us to play through. We loved this course and played an extra 9 holes. The staff were very nice. I will be back on March 24 with a family member from California who has never been here before. My son plans to bring several golfer friends on March 25 he has 2 slots.
Always a pleasure
I am a five handicap golfer, and I appreciate a course that is as beautiful and well-maintained as this one. Staff is super friendly. I couldn't ask for more. Can't wait to come back.
Great winter golf
The course itself is a classic Donald Ross design. While it is "short," it plays long enough in the winter as you have no rollout on your drives. The overall course for mid-February was great, and I am looking to come back in a few weeks and play again once the course comes alive.
The staff is wonderful and the pace of play was well under 4 hours, and the course was not empty nor crowded.
A great value for a truly historical course and setting.
Break in the weather
Our 11 am tee time was pushed back an hour due to heavy frost, but with a noon start it had already warmed into the 50's. Course was in good condition considering the 2 major snowfalls we've had in the last few weeks. Greens were a little bumpy in spots but other than that rolled true. Typical Donald Ross design with few bunkers fronting the greens and tricky greens to read with lots of undulations. Always look forward to playing here and enjoying the layout and mountain scenery, and today was no exception.
Great Every Time
Let me say from the start that I love the golf course. Takes me back to a time this was the Asheville C.C. And Nicklaus and Palmer played exhibition match there just great memories. The day we went there was still a little snow on the ground but all and all the he course was in good shape. Not very crowded. We played in less than 4hr so was great.
A classic course the is fun to play
My wife and I live in Asheville and recently played this course. We had balked at the $100 plus green fees, but when we were able to obtain a lower greens fee we jumped on it. I really like playing a Donald Ross course. The holes are always interesting and the greens can be diabolical depending on pin placement. Because it was in the 30's and 40's the course was pretty empty so we never felt rushed. There were some very nice views as well. The gentleman in the Pro Shop was just that-a Gentleman. He treated us as welcome guests even though were weren't staying at the Inn and paid a discounted greens fee. My wife and I will definitely play this course as often as possible.
Very good and playable course
My wife and I live in Asheville and have seen the course many times. I hesitated in playing the course in the summer because the greens fees were $100-150. We made a tee time even though we still been pretty cold. The benefits of playing in the winter included there being few other players. Pace of play was very relaxed. The course was in very good condition, the exception being some greens had a bunch of pitchmarks because some players are too lazy to repair the pitchmarks. The course appears to offer wide open fairways, but trees and the streams running through the course come into play especially if you don’t have a course guidebook. As in all Donald Ross courses, the greens are basically upturned bowls and a missed shot will run off the green. Because it’s winter, the speed of the greens were slower than normal. The fairways were mowed tight with minimum rough. This is probably to keep the golfers on pace. The gentleman in the Pro shop was great, answering all questions and making sure we changed carts at the turn so we wouldn’t get a low battery. We had a great time and would recommend the course to family and friends.
WARNING-someone tried to break into our car
While we were on the golf course someone ripped part of our door handle off our car and tried to break into i (verified by Honda dealership)t. We were just stopping in to play on our way to Pinehurst so we had luggage and other items in the back. We have tinted windows so someone really had to look hard to see what was in there. We were parked right out in the open; the front row very close to the pro shop.
