Is what it is
Don’t expect Sunset Hills to be a Championship club experience. It is the epitome of a muni course. It is a great course for those wanting a good round of golf for cheap. The layout is classic, and there is not a lot of opportunities to get into trouble which is great for those learning the game. The greens are small and slope to the edges requiring some accuracy on approach. Once on, the greens are in great shape but very slow. Overall a great round at a great price!
Fun Course, Great Value
Great course, especially for the beginner or average player. Tends to be a bit muddy around the greens, but good course layout and a great value.
Sunset Hills G.C.
I played 9 holes then another 18 that I booked through GolfNOW. With coupons from perviously booked rounds, my cost was $3. The staff was super friendly and prior to playing we told them that we would be eating hot dogs for lunch. They had none on the grill and were super friendly in making them.
The course was in a very wet state as it rained that day. My pants were muddy after playing. Some of the holes were water logged. However the fairways were in decent shape for all the rain we got and the green rolled really well. Although the wet conditions I would definitely play again!
Fun course, worth trying
Sunset hills is not a perfect course but it is perfect for me. This course is cheap enough that I can find the time to play weekly. It has a little bit of sand, a little bit of water and a great mix of hole lengths. The front 9 is tight and compressed, you need to be a good striker to score well. On the back 9 you can really open up with the driver. Hole 16 is my favorite hole. Hitting from blues on this 130ish yard par 3 you see a 100 yard lake just in front of tee box. The green is nestled tight just behind a bunker. Tough green to hit. Course condition can be an issue here. Some holes don't drain well and can get a bit swampy even days after a rain. Green are pretty decent and the ball rolls well. If your a consistent low 80 golfer this course will not be a huge challenge. For the rest of us amatuers, it is plenty hard.
Like a lot of NC courses after a rain it was soggy in low areas. The greens were slow but in good shape, tee boxes could use some help. For the money it was great I plan on bringing the wife next time and try the learning course.
High handicap friendly
Price right, course in good shape, layout not overly challenging, but greens a bit slow. Overall, thoroughly enjoyed the course, and plan to go back.
Rough very long.
The rough was VERY long even in the first cut. There were clippings everywhere when we played. Overall not bad for $30, but not sure I’d play there again. Losing balls 1 foot off the fairway is frustrating.
Good round
Course was in good shape, greens were a little slow but in great shape. The real gem at this course is the staff. Extremely friendly and accommodating. I would definitely play here again. And I forgot to mention what a great deal it is.
Greens are tough and rough is high
Good value for the money, but the greens are tough to stick on. They are built like upside down bowls and are very small. Rough and fairways need to be cut but for the price you cannot beat it. Pretty short course overall which really helps pace of play.
Not a favorite
Tee boxes right next to greens. Very tight fairways. Seemed as though there just needed to be a few more acres for the course. A couple of holes nearly share a tee box. Course not in condition for the fees.
Revhj
The course was not mowed. Although it was busy, the pace of play was good. If the course superintendent put some time, energy and money, this could be a decent public course to play.
Decent course, on the right track
Sunset is definitely a starter course. A lot of newer golfers just trying to learn the game. The course layout is pretty good, not too challenging but some fairways get pretty narrow with the tree lines. The tee boxes are pretty level and tended, the fairways are in great shape for a public city course, but the greens need a little TLC. Just patchy as most city owned courses are.
Sunset Hills
Greens in rough shape as are most tee boxes. Not crowded so blazed through the round. Reasonable value for the $$ spent for a practice round.
Don’t do it
Don’t do it. Pace of play was a ridiculously slow. The ‘greens’ looked jacked up and the fairways were full of patches and holes. Will not be playing here again until management gets it together. Was supposed to be a fun day of golf with great weather and I instantly regretted trying this course.
Terrible Course
Terrible golf course, in terrible shape. Most tee boxes were dirt and so were some greens. Way too expensive for the shape of the course
A great round at a great price is what we strive for! Thanks for review and we will continue to focus on the improvement of Sunset Hills!
