Traveling Texan
Up in central PA for work. In the area this is one of the best courses as far as layout, pace of play, and price! The greens were smooth and true! Only thing that could have made them better is if they were a little faster. Not a blade of grass missing on all 18 greens. The fairways were fun but we’re not as full with grass in some places! Overall I would honestly rate this course over Bucknell golf course at this point in time. Had so much fun I actually played twice today in under 5.5 hours.
Lykens Valley
Early in the spring. Grass still needs to grow and needs fertilizer and weed control.... Looks like they have lets some sand traps go ...
Great course
This is a wonderful course with many doglegs. Need to play with control. Great food and drinks at the clubhouse.
Horrible condition, worst condition I have ever played
It was sad to see the old Harrisburg North course in this shape! The fairways were rock hard under low quantities of grass. Lots of bare spots! The greens were just arratted with lots of sand on them. They were soaking wet at noon so the ball wouldn't roll without picking up wet sand which slowed down the ball and made pace impossible to guage. On top of that the plugs from arrattion were dumped right next to the greens which interfere with chipping when you miss the green. The fairways were so hard good tee shot were lost due to the ball running for ever. I would rather never play golf again than to play Lykens valley in that condition!
Rough Shape
Most fairways were in bad shape and ground very hard leading to very bad bounces. Greens were in good shape
Last played it around 20 years ago
I played here when it was Harrisburg North around 20 years ago. It was in much better condition then. Lack of rain considered, the greens were in decent shape and the fairways were fair with some issues. The sand in the bunkers needs redone/new sand and they might as well turn some into grass bunkers and save on maintenance costs.
The rough was mostly dormant or possibly dead grasses too all super dried out. There was no one managing the pace of play on a day the club tournament was going on. I experienced a great deal of waiting on the back nine so course management in terms of pace of play was poor frankly. It is too far out of the way with better courses in the area to come from Hershey so I will not likely go back unless a spring or fall tournament took me there and even then I would probably not return.
Worst fairways
I don't want to say to much bad, because it is record hot this July. BUT the fairways were the worst I have ever played. Hard as a rock, and bare as a baby's rear. What grass was there was straw. The greens, were actually great as were the traps. I know, was in 5 of them. I bet this course in the spring is a beautiful mountain setting with a gorgeous course.
