Play it before it goes fully private

Donald Ross was prolific, designing more than 400 golf courses in his storied career. And it’s natural to wonder whether his courses might start to blend a bit in one’s recollection.

LuLu, which sits toward the beginning of his career (1912), stands out strongly, thanks in part to a site with some interesting character (upon some golf had been built before Ross arrived), including a memorable wedge par 3 (#4) in an old quarry. Other quirky features include several “dolomite” or “chocolate drop” mounds behind greens and along fairways, as well as a few blind shots. At this point the club is semi-private, so if you find yourself in the area, spend the $78 (or less, depending on time of day and week) and play it.

Nice place

Really enjoyed the course. Conditions were great. Greens fast. Rough challenges but fair. The course is in transition and a new clubhouse is under construction so you start on #11 but they seem to be doing their best while going through the update.

Not worth the money

As the new club house is under construction some short comings can be forgiven....the conditions of the tee boxes was awful, fairways were average at best and the greens were deplorable.
The staff in the temporary pro shop were very nice indeed and Mike the starter was very helpful.
But the course conditions for over $45 for a round were poor to say the least!
It is irrelevant how nice or new a club house looks if the course is such bad condition.
Needless to say neither my playing partner nor I will return to Lulu CC.

Wouldn’t honor our tee time

Members were paired with us and they wouldn’t honor our tee time we were supposed to get off at 920 and didn’t get off until 940. And we were promised to be a 4 hour round with good pace but ended up being a 440 round ad a twosome stuck behind the two slowest 4somes. Owner promised to have them keep pace but did nothing

Great, but a bit confusing ?

Course is fantastic, but do to some construction, we started on the 11th hole and had a hard time finding the next hole to play a lot. But all in all it was a great day of golf on a really special course - will be back soon !

Nice greens

On vacation from AZ, best greens I have played in awhile. The rough was rough, but fair. Nice layout and people. Teed off at 3:40pm and got them all in. The only downside is they ran out of water on course, and no late beverage cart. That would not be allowed in AZ.

Refused to allow golf carts after nights rain

Paid $50 advance for $200 4some via golfnow the day before. It rained 1.5 inches the night before(confirmed by grounds keeper). Arrive at course 10am and told no golf carts allowed. We manned up and agreed to walk with pull carts after golf pro only agrees to knock off golfnow $10 fee. Course was fine for cart path rules. Walked a long 18 and all our feet were dry. Every golf staff member had a cart crossing and riding around while we lugged bags at 10% discount in 80 degree weather. I’ve played on courses 5x more saturated with cart path rules. LuLu golf doesn’t care for nonmember play.

Love the course but

I love Lulu great course, very tough. We tees off at 8:10 and a 4some went off before us. It was just me and a friend. The group in front, in which I’m not the best golfer in the world, was hitting the ball 125 yds in front of them off the box and would not let us play through. Like I said I love Lulu but I believe they were members and they treat members like gold over there, public not so much. Easily, the least enjoyable round of golf I’ve had in some time. Don’t know if I’d be back!

Light at the end of the tunnel

This Donald Ross gem will only improve as the new clubhouse facilities finish completion (spring 2019?). Yes, there is an awkward course layout having to begin at 11 and end at 10. Yes, you need to be on site at least one hour before tee time if you want to hit the range (it’s completely across the property). Yes, there are limited resources available for food, beverage, and pro shop merchandise.

But for $60 (cart included), you get a course that is only improving as the weather warms up. The greens were aerated recently and need to grow in, but they will run quickly in another week. Play it now before it once again becomes a private club soon enough. The staff is friendly, and the course design will challenge all skill levels (no need to bring driver out on many of the holes - hint - hint).

Great course, if you have horse blinders

The course itself plays very nicely. The design is great from a golfing standpoint.
Due to the club-house fire a few years ago, groups start on the 11th tee. I love to walk, but I would not walk this course again. 15/18 holes are uphill. No two holes feel the same and you get some unique types of holes, both expected and unexpected.
The Amenities are awful. No water on the course. Absolutely no where to go to the bathroom either. I don't mind watering a tree if there is a secluded spot, but there aren't any of those.
The worst part is that for about 85-90% of the round, you feel like you're playing golf on a highway. The new clubhouse is at the top of a hill in the middle of the course, and all the holes are along roads.
I will try this course again when the trees are fuller and the clubhouse is done.

Tricky Donald Ross Design

Disclosure: LuLu's clubhouse was destroyed in a fire last year so the club built a temporary clubouse/restaurant/bar with some trailers. They were dealt a tough hand but they're managing well. The routing of the course was also affected (play starts on #11).

LuLu lives up to the profile of a Donald Ross course: Thick rough, very fast greens. Word of advice: play below the hole as much as possible. Pretty vanilla layout with a few unique holes that make the course interesting. Public play here is limited, but you can usually get on later in the afternoon for under $50. There are tons of people joining as members so I wouldn't be surprised if they start to limit public play some. It's not as nice as its neighboring country clubs (Manufacturers', North Hills, Cricket Club) but it's a solid course. The range is on the other side of the property so arrive early if you want to practice.

Attitude from the staff

Staff was very rude. Apparently they were doing us a favor by letting us play there. If you go there ...dont bring your own water bottles or snacks. They made us put them back in our cars.
There are many other courses that are just as nice... without the attitude.

Donald Ross Course Worth Playing

Good place to play for the history of the design if nothing else. Small greens and some blind shots with bunkers in play. Played with a member who knew the course, but recommend driving up on some holes to see the layout first.

Course was in good shape altho some of the tee boxes needed a bit of work. Greens were challenging. Well worth a play.

A Real Treat

I enjoyed this course very much. Classic "Old Style".
Tees near greens, so it is very walkable. Beautiful Donald Ross greens, which were very quick. A private course that allows some public play. Take advantage if you can.

Good spot to try once

I had driven by this course for many years but never played. Finally did today. Course had yardage signs, was fairly open fairways so you could see the trouble in front of you, with some blind shots too. Was good to play for once for sure.

Overall nothing fancy as you can tell the course has been around for many years but was glad I played it.
