Going Down
Upon checking website for info, saw “senior” rate with hotdog and drink. At check in…parking lot had many open spaces. Inside we noticed empty shelves and racks. Attendant informed us snack was not included, but I saw it yesterday I informed him. He said he took it off this morning!!!
Course is fair but the rates are probably the highest of all the courses in 3 local counties around me.
Former private course now public
Course was originally built for executives of the nj zinc mining company. The original holes are terrific and mostly on back 9. The newer holes are mostly on the front 9.
The course plays on rolling terrain on back 9 and around swamps on front 9.
Course is worth a play if in the area.
Poor Customer Service
In 2019 we purchased GroupGolfer vouchers that expired in April 2020. Unfortunately with the COVID-19 pandemic we did not get to use them prior to the expiration date due to course closures and other restrictions.. We received an e-mail stating that GroupGolfer vouchers would be extended until the end of the season which we thought was fair given the circumstances.
When we tried to schedule a round and use the vouchers we were told that the extension only applied to vouchers purchased in 2020. The e-mail never stated that but the manager basically said that’s the way it is.
GroupGolfer vouchers never lose their face value and can be used any time for products or services at the establishment. So we decided we would use the vouchers during the week when the price would be cheaper and we could take advantage of the Senior Special they offer. When we arrived we were told that the vouchers could not be used in conjunction with the Senior Special. And to make matters worse they told us that they could only be used to offset the highest rate they were currently charging which was a $59 weekend rate. Are you kidding me? How can you charge seniors who want to use the face value of the voucher a weekend rate on a Monday?
It is apparent that management is trying to recover lost revenues at the expense of poor customer service. Needless to say you have lost our future business and I will not recommend Blue Shamrock to anyone. Very disappointed.
What is up with the condition
Grass growing in the bunkers, tees are out in the fairway or on a set of tees that do not match the score card. Rock hard greens dropped the ball 3 yards in front and it rolls off the back of every green. Distance to center of greens was off. Real mom and pop but mom and pop don't care. I will not be back.
Make Sure You Golf in the Afternoon
Tee times started at 7:20. Clubhouse guy didn’t show up until 8:00. Others there said it has happened before. Seemed like it was ‘normal’ for the course. It stinks to drive an hour for your ‘early’ tee time only to get off an hour later. Course has a good layout and fairways and greens were good. Probably won’t go back.
Down Hill Fast
Lack of course upkeep is starting to show more every week.
Rough not cut (Is there a Major being played here sometime soon we don't know about?)
Dead grass left on top of said rough from the last time it was cut a month ago.
Bugs/mosquitoes are out of control. Course too cheap to spray so bring your own bug repellent.
Sad to see it get this way because this course was once a hidden gem.
Good Layout, fun course
I'm a private club member from Florida, I found the course very average condition at best. Very good lay-out lots of elevation changes, but nothing to severe. I judge a course by condition of sand traps and care around the greens. The bunkers we bad ,most lacked sand and not edged or trimmed very good, the greens were ok. Most courses in the area of the Poconos I find that same, even the more notable ones. I don't want to mention names. Blue Shamrock is a good course for the area and great value.
Not what it used to be
I was able to play this course a few times a year when it was private as Blue Ridge Country Club and I enjoyed the course immensely. Last Saturday, with my usual foursome, I decided to give the public Blue Shamrock a try.
Let's just say that for $57 I was expecting a better product. Greens were bumpy, fairways burned out already in spots, and patchy rough around the greens leads to a troublesome round of golf. The layout itself is still very nice with doglegs and elevation changes, but the conditions are nowhere near worth $57. The bunkers were in decent shape at best, but at least they were able to hit out of.
The staff was fairly friendly and the bar is visually very nice, although the pricing was fairly insane. Food was very good and reasonably priced, however the drink prices were excessive. Let's put it this way when you have to pay $77 dollars for a round of golf and a six pack in Carbon County, you expect a lot better than you received.
I hope it turns around, because it was a great golf course a few years back when private, but it appears to be heading in the wrong direction fast. I would strongly recommend if you are going to Carbon County trying a course like Mahoning Valley or Valley Country Club in Hazleton which is more cost efficient for a better product, or head north to Wilkes Barre if you are from the Allentown area for a quick round of golf at a reasonable price.
Interesting course yet odd par 3's
I traveled about an hour to play this course which is pretty remote. It was in the 50's and cloudy, and the course was in really good shape. The greens were very good, and the traps were some of the best maintained I've played this year. No complaints on course maintenance.
I found the holes changed often and kept me interested in my round. It's a bit odd that it ends on a par 3 and the 10th looked like they changed a par 4 nice hole into a boring par 3. Maybe it was under repair but I couldn't see signs of it. But otherwise it kept my interest well.
Views in the fall were sweet. Golf in October ! I should have scored better but was surprised by the layout several times, which I view as a positive. Number 13, or maybe it was 14, has about a 200 yard forced carry and a big rise to the fairway. And I did the obligatory good high hard drive that clipped the last branch of the last tree and went to golf heaven.
The clubhouse was real nice. Great hang out. Worth a drive, but not trying to overly highly rate it. Good solid course. You may play it well, or then again, maybe not.
Shamrock is Awesome
I saw an article in the Philadelphia Golf Assocation rag about this course and was travelling to Scranton so decided to give it a try, and I am delighted that I did. I got out very early as a single with a 7:30 tee time (with a required cart) and the pace was fantastic. I am a pretty slow golfer so not being pressured from behind is a real plus for me. I think I was on the 10th or 11th hole when a twosome finally started to catch up with me. This place is gem. Nice greens, Nice fairways, the clubhouse is practically new and it is stunning with great views of the course and decent lunch food. Word has it the restaurant is great, but only the Pub was open when I was there. The course layout is a bit long between more than a few of the holes, so I would recommend a cart. I hope this place survives as a public. It was a private that closed, and then reopened as a public. If you have a chance to hit this place - do it.
Well Conditioned for late in the season
Got out as a twosome on a Sunday afternoon; course was in great shape and greens rolled smooth. Behind groups of 3 and 4, so 1st 9 was as little slow. Rather than continue at that pace, we when back and played front 9 again and zipped thru in under 1 1/2 hours. Requires some well placed shots.
greens excellent
3 foursomes in front of us extremely slow good use a ranger
Great course!
Blue Shamrock is a great course. It is challenging but yet extremely a lot of fun. The clubhouse is great as well with great food.
Wow... Is all you need the know
What a wonderful golf course. You definitely don't get the feeling of 2 holes being similar. You need every club in your bag. First timers beware as course knowledge goes a very long way on this tract. No holes are overly difficult but some require a precision tee shot and/or approach shot. She's long too. Couple par 4s well over 400 yards. The deals you get on golf now to play this course are amazing as well. Oh yea, make sure you stop in the gorgeous clubhouse and bar to grab a cold one and some delicious grub. Can't go wrong at this place!
Great shape.
Even at full price of $32 this place is a bargain. We played for $14 through GolfNow......wow !!!
Range was added this year - a good improvement.
Conditions excellent. It can be a challenging course if you pick the wrong tees. It's 6300 from the "whites". There are a couple of holes where BIG numbers are possible but if you play smart you won't have any problems. Only criticism is that the new layout has a short par 3 as the finishing hole.
Definitely will play again. Fall colors are popping now, probably peak next week or two.
Fun To Play
Love this course. The scenery takes your breath away along with the long 5 pars, but that is what makes this course such a great place to play. I appreciate the fact that the ladies tees are maintained and located in good places.
Course had great features and challenges
Had a good time great weather. Tournament in front of us little slow but over all good time. Great price for this time of year. Grwat looking new club house upgrade. Would defiantly come back again to play and also will refer friends who haven't experience the view and mountain surrounding to come and enjoy. Thanks looking forward to playing again.
go gold
If you are a senior, play the course from the gold tees. The green tees make it a looong course.
A Geat Day of Golf
A nearly 100 year old course in terrific shape. Great fairways and I enjoy the smaller greens that you often find with older courses. Great tee options for your level of play. A great day of golf.
