3 Lakes Golf Course
About
3 Lakes Golf Course originally opened in 1923 under the name Alcoma Golf Course. Along with the name change, it also opened its doors to the public and has since become a local favorite. It's known as one of the best values for your money in the area, offering country club-style golf at public rates. The layout was designed by Emil Loeffler, who designed two other courses in Pittsburgh – Highland Country Club and Shannopin Country Club. The course sprawls across more than 150 acres of gently rolling terrain, providing rolling fairways and undulating greens. The classic layout is tough but fair. You'll be tested with a variety of different lies and the holes have plenty of diversity as well, ranging from some that are on the shorter side to others that are monstrous.

its a shame about the greens
I always like to play 3 Lakes. Staff is great, amenities are good(former country club) and it's close to home. The course conditions are good. They have had some drainage issues in the past but it's not a factor now. Most of the greens are either burnt out or diseased. I spoke with the new head greenskeeper on the course and he admitted that they lost most of them but he had a plan to get them back. He assured me that by next spring that I would be pleased with the greens.
Now worth the money
For the $44 I paid, the worst course I've ever played on. They should use some of that money and pay the water bill. All the greens had burned-out, dried out patches. The fairways were like concrete. My wrist was swollen the next day from hitting the hard ground. The bunkers were so hard, I did not even leave footprints on the one at #18. I am not a great golfer, but this made the day miserable. Will never go back, even if it was free.
Course needs love
The staff was amazing however the course looked like a goat ranch, the pace of play was terrible. We were hit down on multiple times. This course could be amazing I love the layout amongst the hills. Just some major love
Used to be a really nice place
I have played there many times, especially when it was a country club. Even last year it was in decent shape, unfortunately not now. Not a bad deal for a golf now price, otherwise, there are better courses for the money.
From Private Club to Dog Track!
This old private club use to be an excellent condition with lightning fast greens and perfect fairways and tee boxes. Now, after going public a few years ago, this course is much worst condition then most Muni's in the area. The fact that I spent $40 to play on a weekday was a compete rip off. All of the fairways were burned out, the greens were the slowest I have putted on in a long time and that pro shop guy was a complete jerk. Go to Grandview if you want to golf in this area or anywhere else.
Oak Lake
Played this course multiple times, always a great play. The course is always in great condition, tee boxes well kept, only complaint are the bugs tend to get bad later in the day but can't fault the course for that. The back 9 is super challenging and has some awesome layouts. The staff is always super friendly. They have some of the best hot dogs I've ever had. Oak lake is always a solid play especially when you can grab a hot deal.
High dollar price for low dollar value
Despite living close to this course, I just can't bring myself to go back there and shell out the $25-$40 price tag for a round no matter what type of special they are having. The last experience I had there despite the great weather was anything but great. Poorly kept greens, a backed up course, and a high price tag made for an in general poor review. I realize that this place is a "former country club" but I don't wish to pay country club prices for a simple round of golf that I can get from another course at a cheaper rate with a better looking course.
3 lakes
Was not impressed with 3 lakes. Got a hot deal for $20 which looked like a steal compared to the normal rate. The course was in okay shape, the pace of play however was terrible. One of the par three tee boxes was so uneven I almost got sea sick trying to hit from it. Only got in 15 holes due to a downpour at the end, but took almost 5 hours. Longest round of my life, would definitely not pay full price to play this course.
Decent
Overall, the course was okay. The weather and the fact that I was playing golf were the best part of the day, not the brown fairways and terrible traps. 2 out of 5.
Very quick pace of play
Nice short mini course. Hilly but challenging. Greens have many breaks.
Terrible
Not only is the course not worth the money and not maintained enough, the staff sucks. Plain and simple. I think they forget it's not a country club anymore.
3 Lakes
The course was ok. It could have been in a little better shape. The greens were nice except for one that looked like it was under repair. Challenging because of the hills but too many blind T shots and I think thats what slows pace.
3 Lakes Review
For the price of this course $46, you would think the track would be in better condition. I played Cranberry Highlands the following day for $56 and the course was in 100% better condition.
The fairways, for the most part, were in decent condition but the rough and greens were super dry & the bunkers were in awful shape. I've played this course before and have had a 6+ hour round which made me nervous coming back. The pace of play was way better than before but I think it's due to the limited amount of people playing the course.
#11 is a downhill par 3 with a very large green. For some ridiculous reason the course decided to make a mini green about 10 yards from the actual green. When I got down there, I was putting on fairway grass and not a green, it made zero sense.
Unless you can't get a tee time somewhere else, I wouldn't suggest playing this course anytime soon.
Good value for the golfnow price (25)
Going in to playing this course for the first time, I was very skeptical. I heard comments about the course conditions both online and by word of mouth. The front 9 was very nice but the back had some holes under construction and one green was a makeshift area of fairway; I guess greens need to be cared for at times but it was also on the side of a hill... not good. However at a reduced price I will definitely return for another round. Once construction is completed, this will be a really nice course.
changes are OK
It's a well designed course with some quality greens. They made a few changes on 2 holes on the front nine that are just OK at best. There are some soft spots on the back nine. If the course had a range to warm up it would be a lot better course. You don't feel like you are warmed up until the 3rd or 4th hole.
WHY??
My review is entitled WHY? Why do they not water the greens? Why do they not water the fairways? Why do they not have smooth surfaces to putt on? Why did they destroy the 4th and 5th holes with some amateurish new designs? Well the answer must be obvious. Lack of money and lack of caring. Also WHY would they send people out in front of us as we made the turn? Sending out a group of 4 then a twosome as we were playing the 9th hole was rude and ignorant. We received a raincheck from the young man in the clubhouse. The place could be nice but....Too bad for the old Alcoma CC, it ain't what she used to be by a LONG SHOT!
get it together
Fairways all rutted up one flag in a fairway.
Who cares about new hole designs when the other holes are not playable
Poor condition and lots of mud and water. sewage.
Condition of course is poor and very bad drainage. Sand traps are not properly maintained, lack of sand.
Deplorable
we live close by and had less time than usual as we needed to catch up on house work-so we grabbed a later time on Sunday. The course is only ok at best, but today, 3 of the holes were literally holes a kids would make in their back yard. One (# 12) is a new dog leg which is a joke, #13 has a tee box where you have to angle your Tee so the ball doesn't fall off, and # 11 has a "green" mowed into the fairway as the green is closed for some reason-this on July 12. Even though this is 4 miles from my home I'll drive an hour to Lenape, Spring Church, even Apollo Elks rather than go here again.
Great course
The course is challenging and fun to play. The staff is friendly and the pace of play just right.
