Springfield Country Club
About
Springfield Country Club is situated just outside of Philadelphia, only 10 minutes from the airport. The golf course sprawls across gently rolling hills accented with stands of mature trees. The changes in elevation are seemingly subtle but they are trickier than they appear. Although the course is playable enough to appeal to a wide range of skill levels, it doesn't start you off easily. The opening hole is a tough par 4 that has a creek meandering across it as well as a severely sloped green, followed by another par 4, an uphill hole with an elevated and bunkered green. There are a few strategically placed bunkers throughout and water makes an appearance on a few other holes. The towering trees that frame many of the holes also present challenges.

Bad experience, worse course
After 3 years of a failed bermuda grass experiment the course is finally offering a reduced rate. This still doesn not make it worth it to play here. They have a USGA memo on their website as their disclaimer that the course is in bad shape. The course staff seems more proud that the course is dead, but has bermuda grass than apologetic. I golfed here twice this year, (both not by choice, this is my local golf course and there are always tee times available now) and the course isn't crowded anymore which is a plus. The fairways are almost totally brown and dry except for the errant weed. My golf cart died and my threesome had to continue, I didn't ask them to wait. It took 15-20 minutes and they came out with a new cart. By this time I wasn't happy. It ruined my round for me. Anyway, "this happens" was the rangers explaination. They charged me for a product and it was not what I had paid for.
I play 3 times a week and can tell you about every course in the area and this "country club" is garbage.
I won't be going back and you should't either. The course is a dump and the staff is proud.
Under renovations
The layout of the course is nice. Has challenging hills and dog legs left and right. The greens were great. Nice and smooth and fast. They are in the third season of growing Bermuda grass on the tee boxes and fairways. A lot of areas where the grass is permit and have not come to life yet. Once they do then it would be a better place to play. I will go back once that is done. Other than that it is a nice course.
Save your money
Since they came up with the idea of using Bermuda grass in their fairways they ruined the course. There are no fairways in good condition meaning most of the fairways are just dirt. The best advice I can give is to hit in the first cut of rough and hope it's sitting up. Not worth the $50

First sign that you shouldn’t play a course is when there are signs up that say to ask about discounted rates because of course conditions only to find out discounts are only given to township residents and seniors. Its $46 to walk at 4PM on a Saturday without a discount so no biggie. What a waste of money, the course is in horrendous shape with the exception of the greens. For the most parts the greens were decent but several holes had dead spots and apparently the clientele of the course doesn’t understand how to fix a ball mark.
The rest of the course is appalling, tee boxes and greens are a combination of dirt and dormant Bermuda. And therein lies the problem, management has decided to regrass the course with Bermuda. The Philadelphia area is barely in the acceptable zone to utilize Latitude 36 Bermuda and a township own and run municipal course is not one that should be trying it. Once the tee boxes and fairways grow in this course will have a 3 month shelf life where it’s in playable shape, the remaining 9 months you should just play winter rules. It also appears that management lost all their mowers because the rough was 2-3” all over, I would assume that a typical round is going to run 5 hours given how hard it is to locate balls a foot off the fairway.
I wouldn’t recommend this course to anyone, save your money.
Worse Golf Course in America, Maybe the World
It's hard to believe that management would allow this course to be opened in the condition it's in. There are no fairways - in other words, the fairways are all dirt - no grass. The rough next to the dirt is not mowed so it is very difficult to find a ball hit into what should be the light rough. The tee boxes also have no grass, except for the sixth tee box. The only positive thing I can say about this golf course is that the greens are in excellent condition. All in all, it's easily the worse golf course I've ever played on in my 30 plus years of golfing.
My recommendation to management is to close the course until it is ready for prime time play. If not, explain to your customers when they call for a tee time that the course conditions are terrible and that you can play at your own risk. Also, the greens fees should be drastically discounted commensurate with the condition of the golf course.
Fortunately, I don't live in Springfield Township, but if I did I would be extremely embarrassed for the condition of my township's pride and joy.
Wait awhile before you play
Springfield CC has always been a decent muny. I play here at least once a season. Last fall they gassed their fairways and installed a more durable grass. The problem seems to be that a combination of factors, including a brutal winter, has prevented the grass from being established. As a result many if the fairways are brown and patchy. It will probably be fine next year. On the plus side the greens were great and they are discounting greens fees.

I played here for the first time last week, and was highly disappointed. Unless you like hitting from burnt out, dirt fairways, save your money. There are much better options in the area. Even with a discounted rate, way too expensive. Id rather play karakung, yea, i said it.
Horrible shape, ignorant staff
Do Not Play this course without calling to check conditions first!!!! They put in new fairways last year and every fairway is brown and burned out looking. The starters are ignorant grumpy old men. I emailed the pro shop to inform them of a particular incident that occurred and they never responded (note: it definitely warranted a response). As a resident of the township, it's sad to see where this course has gone in recent years from a staffing and condition perspective. Paxon Hollow is a much better local option.
Nice course, will play again
Well maintained even for the fall, with only one hole (11) with a ton of leaves. Well put together, not a ton of character from hole to hole, but I fell I got my money's worth.
This course is layed out very well and is a true shot making course.
What a play, although this course got the best of me this time. I'm looking forward to going back and taking another shot at it. For this time of the year I was really surprised how well kept the greens where. For the money, this course is well worth the hour drive from NJ.
Some really Great holes at this course!!!!!
Springfield C.C. has always been a favorite of mine. There are many holes that are very challenging that requires you to either draw or fad your tee shot. I play from the White Tees and I believe if you score in the mid to high 70's you really had a GREAT day. The only negative I will offer is: FILL THE SAND TRAPS WITH REAL SAND.
fun and challenging.
Fun, challenging, and well maintained course. Not sure if it was all the rain from the previous days but more than a few balls were lost in open areas by our foursome due to the thickness of the rough. The longer grass and fallen leaves just ate them up. But I will definitely play again. Only small issue was upon arrival. I showed my confirmation from the phone app and I was questioned in a slightly condescending manner as to whether I paid for the rounds. I had to dig through my emails to find that confirmation and still they questioned it. The other twosome we were partnered with had the same experience as they had also booked through golfnow. Minor issue, but every other time I have used the app I pretty much say my name and I walk onto the course. The rest of the staff was great. Especially the snack cart that came upon us in the back nine.
Needs help
This course was a challenge on the greens and the staff was very nice, but there were way too many patches of dirt and mud on the course. Not only that the bunkers were filled with water and it hadn't even rained that much in the last week. Outside of the greens this course needs a lot of TLC.
Great course for my game at this point but fairways need attention.
There was an overemphasis on speed of play from both my playing partners (they are bogey golfers; I once was but since a cataract operation 3 yrs ago, I have depth perception problems with my swing & am erratic, resulting in too many poor shots & lost balls). Persistent pressure from twosome behind us also detracted from enjoyment of play.
Course layout challenging. Requires good shot selection to keep ball in fairway.
Course has recently undergone renovation to replace fairway grass with Bermuda. There are a number of brown patches that did not take. There are also a number of large areas of sod that are 1 to 2 inches above the fairway turf.
Good Value
The greens were very good. Fairways were recently redone and need more time. 19th hole is a beaut.
Usually a well kept course but there are problems with the fairway conditions this year.
I have played this course many times. It is usually in well kept condition but this year they are experiencing problems with sections of the fairway grass dying out. My best guess is that it's a fungus related issue because we had a really wet early part of the summer. It would have been nice if SCC dropped a few $ off their rates to accommodate for the lesser conditions but they did not. That is why I cannot currently recommend this course to anyone unless they are getting the Hot Deal discount.
Great challenge for the $
Apparently over the summer someone at Springfield decided they needed seeding and in the process destroyed much of the fairways. Just about every hole had dry, brown grass-less patches in the fairways, some holes with VERY large affected areas. Maybe the seeds will grow in for next year. That being said the greens were immaculate and once the dew dried very, very fast.
Challenging elevation changes, course played well despite the bare fairways. Still a good value at $43.
Course is in Terrible condition
The fairways were burned out in the beginning of the season to make way for new "Bermuda" grass. It has not taken. There are patches of grass intermittently throughout the bare, seeded ground, and even the patches have not taken roots yet. It feels as though the ground is sliding out from under you when you pivot. The tee boxes are grown so thick that the tee has to go through a half inch of grass before it reaches turf. The greens are thick as well, like putting on shag carpeting. Couldn't have been running better than a 4.5. I will not be returning any time soon.
course in very poor condition
fairways all burnt, tee boxes uneven, no hole directions on either card or sign, only give yardage, makes it difficult to play because most holes are doglegs. WILL NOT PLAY THIS COURSE AGAIN.
