Great University Course
For Students this course is tough to beat. Not expensive, great membership deals, definitely worth it. Also the Willie Park Jr. designed holes are pretty cool considering he designed courses like Sunningdale. Definitely a fun round, but don't expect an incredible course if you're used to immaculate conditions. If you're an alum or a good golfer in State College this probably isn't the course for you.
Always a good day at Penn State Golf Course
Penn State is one of my favorite golf destinations. I enjoy both courses but particularly like the White course because, while challenging, it produces lower scores. I've made the journey to PS for the last four years and have always found the courses in wonderful condition. Nice full fairways and well manicured greens. Spring and summer weather at Happy Valley is unbeatable. The well stocked pro shop has everything a player would want and the staff is friendly and helpful. Synthetic turf tee boxes on the range do not present a problem for a pre-round warm up - great short game area for putting and bunker practice. Check their web site for discount coupons to save on greens fees. I look forward to my next round at PS.
Average course
Super pro shop with a lot of merchandise. This course is average with a high price. I would only play here using a Golf Now discount. The greens were in excellent shape and they have nice clean quality carts. This course is very walkable.
Penn State Blue course is one of the finest in the State College.
The Blue Course at Penn State University is one of the best tracks in the area. The course is well maintained, and is reasonably priced. The internet special allows folks to play the Blue Course Mon - Thurs (after 11 AM) for $35. Considering that Mountain View is asking $49..this is a really bargain. The course is challenging from the White Tees, difficult from the Blue Tees, and I suspect the pros would have all they can handle from the Black Tees. This is a course you want to play!!
More challenging than given credit for
Left and right will usually leave a second shot, but there is tree and sand trouble all over the place on this course, and deceivingly difficult greens. Pace of play can be frustratingly slow at times, but with a little luck, playing through isn't much of a problem. A little stronger ranger presence wouldn't be a bad thing. Overall, a great value.
