The 18-hole Sanctuary Golf Club At Cat Island in Beaufort, S.C. is a semi-private golf course that opened in 1985. Designed by George Cobb, Sanctuary measures 6,673 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 136 and a 72.6 USGA rating. The course features four sets of tees for different skill levels.
Sanctuary Golf Club may be the Lowcountry's best conditioned golf course. With velvet tiff-dwarf greens, this George Cobb creation sports beautiful views of Port Royal Sound from many holes.
The course is located on a 400+ acre barrier island just a short 45-minute drive from Hilton Head Island. The layout takes full advantage of the wooded interior with centuries-old live oak trees in abundance.

Really great layout with several memorable holes. First course we played since Florida that wasn't thin hard fairways. Had new deep sand, some dead spots where carts congregate. Greens were great except for a few spots. Very friendly and helpful. Worth the drive.

This course has recently been purchased by a new local owner. He is doing all of the right things to improve playability and condition.
The clubhouse is under renovation- soon to be completed. Once open, it will provide a nice option for after golf dining and drinking.
The greens had recently been aerated but have come back nicely. Once they are cut, they should roll perfectly. They did hold the ball nicely when you hit into them. Just putt harder as they are shaggy.
The fairways were a bit scortched due to a prolonged period of hot and dry weather but the irrigation system is back up and running and should be able to correct the issues on a few of the fairways that were most affected.
The course was abuzz with maintenance workers attending to some of the deferred issues which was a good sign but none of them got in the way of our round.
We were able to play at a leisurely pace and enjoyed the wildlife and lowcountry water views on almost every hole. Still managed to complete the round in under 4 hours.
You should play here. Great place- terrific value.

This is an excellent layout and well maintained. The greens were a little slower than I'm used to but not bumpy. The marsh views and the wildlife were memorable. This course compares favorably to the courses at Kiawah and Seabrook without the high price.

The last course George Cobb designed is great. First 5 holes are all you want with water and views. Great routing with many tee choices. Management is changing so not sure what will happen. fairways being cut when they needed instead to be watered and greens were slow from recent aeration but no question of a great design. Reminded me of Surf Club with outstanding views. Great pace of play. Thanks to the pro shop for working a single into a great group of guys. Will be back again.

I have golfed a lot of courses in the Beaufort/Hilton Head Area. I always enjoy the Sanctuary the best. I have a 20 handicap. The course does not beat me up while at the same time offers a good challenge every time I play it. It is a great home town type course.
It is a must play for anyone interested in experiencing what golf is like in the low country.

If you like a challenge, play this course. The first 5-6 holes require you to place the ball pretty precisely... if you can do that you will have an excellent round. The greens are in fantastic shape and the fairways are pretty good as well. The tee boxes were not as good but apparently had some work done recently...they are still very playable! It is a beautifully scenic course as well... my most recent round was just a pleasure to be there.

"Tough Course (4 handicap)"

Tough golf course. Course knowledge is huge here. I wasn't able to play to my handicap. I shot 6 over and have been playing to about a 4 lately. I thought the course was tougher than the course rating of 72.4 (par 71) from the back tees. The first 3 holes will eat your lunch if you aren't ready. I suggest hitting a small bucket of balls or you can just throw three balls in the water on the first three holes. Your choice. If you have a buddy that out drives you by 40 but can't find the fairway that often then take him to this course and suggest a small wager. Some tight holes mixed in with a few long holes. The greens aren't that small, but were difficult to hit secondary to being firm. The greens were faster than average. The course overall condition is above average for this time of year. The design of the course is difficult. Hope to get to play it again after the grass greens up some. Overall the course drains well. Like may coastal courses you can't always see the trouble that is out there. Buy a yardage book for your group. Make then give you a few bucks each if you're cheap.
