Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2019.

The 18-hole Sanctuary Golf Club At Cat Island (previously known as South Carolina National Golf Club) in Beaufort, S.C. is a semi-private golf course that opened in 1985. Designed by George Cobb, Sanctuary measures 6,673 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 136 and a 72.6 USGA rating. The course features four sets of tees for different skill levels.

Sanctuary Golf Club may be the Lowcountry's best conditioned golf course. With velvet tiff-dwarf greens, this George Cobb creation sports beautiful views of Port Royal Sound from many holes.

The course is located on a 400+ acre barrier island just a short 45-minute drive from Hilton Head Island. The layout takes full advantage of the wooded interior with centuries-old live oak trees in abundance.

Beautiful picturesque course

The course was in good shape, however, they did not have a starter and poor signage.

Very scenic very user friendly course

Although nestled in a residential community, this course offers some spectacular marsh and water views. Course is in above average condition, and for the price, is a great value.

All 4 par threes are water carrys. In fact, water comes into play on several holes, so accuracy is a must for this course. Greens were still recovering from aeration but still rolled really well. Also, bunkers looked to be raked daily.

No cart attendant but that never bothers me, although I wish courses would at least hire a high school or college kid to work for tips.

This course has excellent practice facilities - putting green, bunker, chipping green, and driving range. Will repeat playing this course and highly recommend if you are in the area.

Fun course

Have played this course a number of times. Hard to beat the value. Nice layout and a number of beautiful holes. Greens had not healed completely from aeration and were bumpy in places or would have rated course condition higher.

Scenic

Very scenic and quiet course. I took my son there for the first time.and we had a great time together. We got around in about 3 hours. The fairways were in good shape and the greens were a little slow. It looked like they had been top dressed not to long ago. Overall we had a great experience and I would highly recommend this course.

Enjoyable, Great Pace

To start with, greens had been aerated, but I knew that going in. Course otherwise is great and enjoyable. Check in took about 12 seconds, 3 other groups on the course. Will be back!

Fun track, beautiful location

When you talk about location, location, location, this place has it. It's a fun, challenging layout on a beautiful piece of land. Lots of forced carries and marsh and water views. The fairways weren't in great shape when we played it, but they weren't terrible. If you're just playing a casual round, just play the ball up and you'll be fine. The greens were in pretty good shape and were quite firm and fast. Overall, this is a fun course in a fantastic location and one of the best values around.

Very nice atmosphere

I really enjoyed my first time at this course and plan to return. Played at mid-day and round was just less than 3 hours. Relatively short from the white tees but a couple of forced carries. Greens in excellent shape. The whole experience was great.

Tougher than Its Write Up

The write up in the Hilton Head Golf Magazine made the course out to be a lot less difficult than it was. There are some long carries and narrow fairways. One of the par threes on the back nine is near impossible (go long.) Sprinklers were running on a number of fairways. Greens were in great shape!

Great place, mediocre conditions

This course has a quality layout, though some tight drives. Beautiful scenery and wildlife is offset by poor fairways (couldn't tell the cut line from fairway to rough, and it really didn't matter). Greens were hard and fast. Putted pretty true, but old Bermuda grass, yet cut down enough to not make grain an issue. For $25 it was decent value. A muni course with a CC layout and scenery.
