Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2019.

The 18-hole Sanctuary Golf Club At Cat Island (previously known as South Carolina National Golf Club) in Beaufort, S.C. is a semi-private golf course that opened in 1985. Designed by George Cobb, Sanctuary measures 6,673 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 136 and a 72.6 USGA rating. The course features four sets of tees for different skill levels.

Sanctuary Golf Club may be the Lowcountry's best conditioned golf course. With velvet tiff-dwarf greens, this George Cobb creation sports beautiful views of Port Royal Sound from many holes.

The course is located on a 400+ acre barrier island just a short 45-minute drive from Hilton Head Island. The layout takes full advantage of the wooded interior with centuries-old live oak trees in abundance.

Shabby Greens

I played this course last year, and it was great! Fairways were ok (you can always find a piece of grass to hit off of), but the greens were outstanding (smooth and fast) and the course layout is fun.
This year when we arrived, we asked in the shop how the course was and they said, “The fairways and rough are a little long and the greens are a little shabby.” I had no idea what that meant. Now I do…terrible!
The fairways and rough need to be mowed and they will be fine. The greens were slow, bumpy and had bare spots.
Check with the shop before booking on Golfnow. If they say they are shabby, stay away!!!

Great place

Nice place, good greens. Good level of dificulties. One thing to remember. It's on a military base so plan some spare time to cross the main gate. If youre not invited by someone from the base they take close to 30 minutes to identifiy you. But once this step done you just have to enjoy the course!

amazing layout!

This course is amazing! The layout is great, and the greens were in good shape. The fairways were ok, but only because they haven't been mowed. Really didn't understand that. But the layout of this course and the scenic views makes you forget about the hairy fairways.. oh, great food too!

Laid back &lo

Wide fairways allow for good positioning. However, approaches to greens require accuracy. Undulating greens make for challenging putting. Verry friendly and accomodating staff. Weell eorth the trip tp get there.

A Great Golfing Experience

Our foursome enjoyed our first ever round at Sanctuary. Looking forward to our return with a better knowledge of the course layout, etc. By the way, the greens were very playable.

A Great couse with just about everything you would want! PLenty of trouble lurking, but fair and fun!

We really enjoyed this round of golf! This course has some very interesting holes and considering the season is young was in very good condition. The cart paths were a bit rough is the major flaw! PLenty of water! Greens were in good condition and rolled true! Would play again!

Great day, Average course

Not sure where the other reviewers have played, but this course is NOT in 4 star condition. Like most coastal course it is Bermuda grass. Unlike real 4 star courses, they have not over seeded with winter rye to make the fairways have green grass. This time of year the dormant bermuda has decayed so mostly you play off dirt. Greens where fast with little grass.

The only green grass on the course is invasive Poa. S0 make sure you clean your shoes before going to other courses. Your greens keeper won't be happy if you trek back Poa.

south carolina winter golf

first let me say i will play this course again. the day we played 2 days after heavy rain,.and the fairways had taken a beating and..... the greens ran true and the traps were raked and fluffy except for standing water, so the greens crew had been out working. this is a fun course with beautiful wildlife. a variety of holes, requiring planning on the tee box. using your driver on every par 4/5 will land you in trouble. ....and watch out for #1, take your bogey and walk away happy. food at the bar was great!!! looking forward to playing sanctuary again when it has lushed up.

Sanctuary at Cat Island

In spite of the February time frame this course was well maintained and the greens were in great shape. The scenery and course layout were great. Staff were friendly and the food was very good.

Will definitely play here again.

Pleasantly Surprised

I am new to HHI region. I am trying new courses to find some new favorites. I tried Hilton Head Lakes. And it was decent. Got that course for $25 on a hot deal and it was worth the money. But I would likely only play that course with the hot deal. Then I tried Sanctuary. Again, a hot deal. $13 for 18 holes. Even if the course was disappointing, it was $13. After taxes, we paid $30 for 2 players. My friend is more picky than I am and was coerced into driving 35 minutes from Southwestern Bluffton to go to this course he had never heard of.

On the second tee, he turned to me, and said "Great find, E." The first hole was scenic, over water. As was the second. We were in for a treat. The course was in great condition, even in late January. It was 37 degrees at the beginning of our round. By the back nine, it had warmed up to about 45-50. Neither of us cared. It was sunny, and not windy. Just chilly. After the round on the way home, we were discussing how great GolfNow is. Without it, we likely never find this gem. We would have easily paid the $35-40 normal 18 price. And will in the future, as all the hot deals are at 8:30am when it will be cold. But the course is easily worth $40 and we will book tee times this week for afternoon golf.

Great Course, Tremendous Value

Lowcountry golf at its best. There are many great courses from North Myrtle to Hilton Head, and the Sanctuary is no exception. The holes are fun, challenging, and scenic. I live 80 miles away, but will make the trip again. It was a lot of fun!
