The 18-hole Sanctuary Golf Club At Cat Island (previously known as South Carolina National Golf Club) in Beaufort, S.C. is a semi-private golf course that opened in 1985. Designed by George Cobb, Sanctuary measures 6,673 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 136 and a 72.6 USGA rating. The course features four sets of tees for different skill levels.
Sanctuary Golf Club may be the Lowcountry's best conditioned golf course. With velvet tiff-dwarf greens, this George Cobb creation sports beautiful views of Port Royal Sound from many holes.
The course is located on a 400+ acre barrier island just a short 45-minute drive from Hilton Head Island. The layout takes full advantage of the wooded interior with centuries-old live oak trees in abundance.

Most beautiful course I have ever played!
Beautiful course with many holes built in the marsh with forced carries. Greens were perfect with good speed. Greens were a unique grass developed to be salt water resistant. Staff was extremely friendly. I would highly recommend this course to all level of players. There are tee's for all level of players
Tough Fun Course
tough fun course.
I would recommend more water stations on the back nine! It was a very hot day and were very thirsty before the station on Hole 13.
true greens
Good staff. Well cared for greens and fairways. True greens.
This course is mediocre at best.
10-18 blue tee boxes not maintained at all. Sand traps not properly cut around greens. Lot of unmarked harzards. No yardage markers present. Very poorly marked course.
straight
If you don't hit em straight, you are not going to be happy.
The ruff is manicured to make challenging.
I will play there again
Great views of the water
Great value, good to excellent condition challenging .
Nice course--scenic and uncrowded on a hot day
Played on a hot Sunday afternoon. Got a great deal through Golfnow (<$20 for twosome). Course was uncrowded and the atmosphere was relaxed (no starter, so we were allowed to start well before our tee time, and no ranger, at least none we saw). Pace of play was good till we caught up with a twosome toward the end of the front nine who was playing rather slowly. We had the course to ourselves for most of the back nine. Course condition was pretty good except for lots of bald/dead spots on the fairway, especially inside 100 yards. This is a scenic course with some marsh/water but that did not come into play too much of the time. We will definitely return but maybe on a less humid day, since the low country landscape did not allow for much of a breeze. There is a practice range and adjacent putting/chipping area. Practice balls approx. $4.50 small or $7.50 large bucket. Pro shop adjoins a pub-type bar/restaurant, but it was closing when we finished our round so we'll have to try that another time.
Scenery was absolutely beautiful.
I really liked the layout. Played on a Saturday, and flew through the first 14 holes.
Bring some bug spray, as my only issue was the buzzing gnats.
beautiful coastal course
We made last minute plans for this course and much to our suprise this turned out to be one of the best courses we have ever played. The staff was very helpful showing us around the facilities and getting us on our way out to the beautiful and well maintained first hole. If there can be anything at all negitive about this outing it is that the first three holes are probablly the most difficult ones on the course and you coiuld feel overwhelmed to start wirh, but all in all this was a very positive golf outing.
Lots of water in play. Great greens!
Lots of great holes! Very nice grill also. Greens were fantastic.
we play here more than anywhere else-by choice!
From the practice facility to the club barman, a really nice golf course, with just enough challenge to keep you coming back year after year.
Course design & layout were fantastic. Required you to think where you needed to be to play your next shot on almost every hole.
Course design & layout were fantastic. Required you to think your way around the course on every hole. Course conditions could not have been better. Greens were pristine & true.
Off course scenery was also great, with ocean views and plenty of wildlife on course with herrons, cranes & egrets on every lagoon.
I am not a fan of bermuda roughs, too much luck involved in lies, I would prefer to have zoysia roughs instead. Flags not color coded for pin placement ? Pace of play was fantastic !!! We played in less than 3 hours, and took time to enjoy scenery along the way.
No pictures or landing yardages on scorecards or tee markers. $3.00 yardage book a "must" to play course for any level handicap.
This course is a good value.
Course is overall in good condition. Greens are in good shape.Would recommend course to others.
Fun course!
This was a very fun course to play. The course had both easy and difficult holes. It also had many great views. Some of the fairways were in rough shape but I think it was from all the rain they've had in the last few weeks. Despite the wet conditions, the greens were in perfect condition. I will definitely play this course the next time I am in the area.
Fun course. With nice views.
Slow greens and spotty fairways aside, Sanctuary golf course has some great holes to play and is very fair.
Great value, beautiful scenery.
Love the layout. Relatively short but some very tight fairways. Greens were in very good shape. Fairways are not good, but it didn't bother my enjoyment of the round. Holes 16 and 17 are worth it alone. Will definitely play again soon.
The course is very challenging
We found this course to be tough but rewarding. Over all I would rate it an excellent course.
Excellent golf course -scenic beauty, a real shot maker's lay out
Loved the course - it is located in a scenic wonderland. Must play if you are in the area. Only down side was the greens were aerated and still not recovered, so a bit of a bumpy ride.
Very senic course, lots of views of marsh and the bay.
Greens had been punched putting was hit and hope it goes in the hole. Fairways need water bad.
