Tough Rough
Course has seen better days. Tee boxes need attention and maintenance. Fairways were good with only sporadic spots of crabgrass and weeds. It is necessary to stay in the fairway. Even 6 inches off the fairway could cause time searching for lost ball. A number of times we were lucky to find the crown of the ball. The fairway had no first cut, just Bermuda rough. When able to find the ball, the rough was still tough to escape unless using wedges. The greens are where this course could use a lot of work. Weeds and crabgrass are on most, in some places they deflect putts. All in all we had an enjoyable day with perfect weather, it was still better than working.
Grumpy staff
25$ for a rider that didn’t play. Course conditions are very poor and staff was very rude.
Getting better
The course has shown good improvement since 2 years ago. Greens mostly in good shape except for three which had some bare patches in the putting area though fringe areas are more bare. Fairways in good condition. Tee areas are sparse but not terrible. Sand traps were bad due to a pounding rain the previous night, the starter said the bunkers were normally in much better condition. I will see next week if that is true.
High priced for quality.
I was charged an additional $25 for a non playing rider when other nearby courses did not and I was the last tee time and course was not busy. The greens were not well kept. Poorly maintained. Overall enjoyed the layout.
Championship caliber course with municipal course greens fees
Myself and three buddies drove down from Columbia, South Carolina on Sunday. It was recommended to us by another friend. Every single person that works at this golf course. From the cart and bag attendant to the ladies in the grill. Everyone was super friendly. The gentleman that we gave our greens fees to, was super nice and very accommodating. We even had an opportunity to meet the owner. He is also a super down-to-earth, accommodating gentleman. You can tell he has a passion for this golf course and it truly shows up when you’re on the course. The course is challenging yet rewarding. If you are hitting good shots, there are a lot of opportunities to score . If you’re not hitting good shots, there are ample layup areas. The greens were in awesome shape, true and fast. I would absolutely recommend everyone come play this course. I think the green fees and everything were $70 before tips. The carts are in great shape Cart paths are in great shape. It was a pleasure to play this course. They have a small pro shop. They do have a big putting green and they have a driving range. Island West, you definitely need to go play it.
The tee boxes need to be maintained
The ground was so hard at the tee box, you couldn’t get the tee into the ground
Enjoyable 9 holes
Played a 9 hole warm up on the way into Hilton Head. Enjoyed it.
Nice course
One of the nicer budget friendly courses in the area. The greens need some work, but overall we loved it. It’s going into our rotation.
Challenging
Nice course layout with a good challenge. Needs more love. Greens were slow and bumpy. Tee offs need seeding. That being said, it was good value for money as we paid the twilight rate at 13:00.
Much Improved Course.
I had a very good experience playing Island West. Course conditions were much improved since I last played it a couple years prior to its closure. The staff was great. Course conditions very good. The new management has made some needed improvement with some more to come. Greens were rolling very well. I plan to return for more play in the future. Excited to see what the future brings. Glad to see the comeback as the course offers some challenging and fun play. .
Rough
We played after 2 days of rain so we expected the course to be wet. That did not have an impact of my review. There were many bare spots on the fairways and the greens. T boxes were rough and uneven with bare spots.
This comment was made almost 2 years ago. The course was closed for almost 3 years and has reopened under new management.. The Course is in great shape with all the work that has been done. Should give it a try.
Muddy Mess
Course should have been closed. Very poor drainage on many holes. Even the cart paths were impassable in some areas. Played it once three years ago after Hurricane Mathew and wasn’t impressed. Thought I’d give it another chance. Save your money.
Thanks for your review. Course is just now transitioning from Winter to Spring playing conditions with turf coming out of dormancy. Expect major improvements in playing conditions over the next several weeks. Not familiar with a seeding program for tees in warm climate grass.
