Pleasant surprise
Having played at island west over the last 25 years, I can honestly say that I have never seen this course in such excellent shape from tee to green.
Great course for the money
Great course for the money in very good condition. Very quiet course, probably because it is much further off the island. Does not always have staff attending to your clubs, but that's Ok with us. Saw a lot of gators!!
Thank you for the positive review. Look forward to seeing you again!
Course needs some tender loving care
Enjoyed the course layout and pace of play but overall course condition is fair. Tee boxes are in poor condition and not much grass in the fairways. Green conditions were very uneven but not as bad as the condition of the cart paths. A 4-wheel drive may have been a better option to get around the course..
Yes, the cart paths are in dire need of repair in some areas. Brown Golf Management does have plans to address this issue in the near future. Thank you for the feedback.
Good value for the money
This was a very enjoyable round of golf. Course was in pretty good condition for this early in the season. Pace of play was great.
Thank you for playing Island West. We are glad you enjoyed your experience and hope to see you back soon.
Safety
One criticism. The backshop tries to ride the back of the cart from the exit at hole 18 to the parking lot. This is dangerous and not recommended by the cart manufacturers. When I tell them they are not to ride on the back, they insist on saying that it is OK or that they do it all the time. A friend of mine died at our course doing the same thing and now everyone abides by the rules. This must stop.
Been a while.
Decided to try the course out based on reviews. I have not played there in over a year and the greens was so horrible then I didn’t even finish the front 9. Now the greens are beautiful. They widened the fringes but desperately need to mow them tighter and the greens looks phenomenal! The putting green still had a few bad spots and there is still a few greens that had a few bad spots on them but wow what a difference.
Now biggest complaint now is the rough. It is so thin and y’all that the ball just goes straight down and hard to find. The gang reel mower these use to cut it makes the rough look horrible as well! And looks like they are going to start mowing the fairways wider in places as well. The greens speed was very slow around a 9 max on stint but they rolled very true. They had a small amount of rain through the night but was not cart path only and should have been on a few holes. Course is on the right path to getting back to a golf course. Really wish they wouldn’t have made the tee box’s smaller and why would they ever stop mowing the walking paths from tee box to tee box and from cart path to tee box’s since their rough is shin high is beyond me. Was a total let down!
I’ve played the course several times and happy to say the course is showing improvement. The greens have improved quite a bit over the last several months. The fairways were in excellent shape as well.
Hilton Head 2018
Some of the greens were infested with what looked like weeds. Fairways were a bit thin in places as well. Overall, the course was in average condition.
Nice course
This is a good course in great shape and fun to play. Staff are friendly. Highly recommendable
Not bad, not bad at all...
In the nearly two years since I last played this course I have heard nothing but severely negative comments regarding the condition...in particular the condition of the greens.
We were surprised and somewhat impressed at the overall condition of the entire course and in particular the greens. The last time we played here there was more green "paint" on the greens than grass.
The course has come back a great deal. This is a nice piece of golf real estate and it is on its way back but still has some distance to go.
I'll conclude but saying "it's worth a try."
Nice day for golf
Made reservations late the night before we played. Had not played here for quite some time because of bad conditions, but the course is in very nice shape now. I look forward to more play here in the future.
I played on September 1, the same day as Robert, the other reviewer, did. I make it a point have ACCURATE reviews. Reviews like his make me mad as his was totally inaccurate, saying the greens were "poor at best" and the whole course is "run down." Not only were the greens not "poor at best," they were in decent-to-good shape. There were patches of crabgrass occasionally, but 99% of the greens, except for one or two, were nothing but grass. They rolled very well. The rest of the course's condition was pretty good, too. It's not Augusta National, and there are times the greens are not good, but this wasn't one of them. If you play this September and probably in October, ypu'll most likely be okay with the conditions. And no, I do not work for Brown Golf or even know anyone who does.
Going, going, gone......
This course has been in decline for years now. The layout could be challenging and fun but the course is almost unplayable. The rough is too high, the greens are poor at best, the whole course is shabby and run down. It's too bad because it used to be real nice. Brown Golf needs to go. Look at the comeback of Eagles Pointe or Crescent Pointe. Maybe next year, but I wouldn't play it again this year
Not a great experience
The day started off pulling into an empty lot at 7:10, which should have been an indication to us. Apparently one of the employees was late so we got our own carts. Upon arriving at first tee we realized they had the carts setup for an outing lter that day so we took those score cards back to the proshop. Upon arrival the starter gave us a hard time like it was our issue he was late and he had to prepare 2 other carts for the outing. Apparently he didn't get the memo that we are paying customers. Greens were in horrible condition. We have played here in years past, but highly unlikely we will go back.
Lucky day for me
It’s a great course and very challenging, but I had one of those magical days and every ball seems to end up near the cup… I shot a 74 which is my best score ever!!
Thank you for the positive review. We have come a long way with our course conditions and appreciate it your patronage of Island West.
