About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.
Originally opened in 1988 as a private club called Crickentree, the course changed its name and opened to public when it changed ownership in 1996. The golf course is known for its beautiful setting that has everything from meandering streams to towering hardwoods. There is also a scenic 17-acre lake that comes into play on a few holes. The risk-reward layout appeals to players of all skill levels. With good course management, the rewards are plenty, but it's not overly punishing for the high handicapper. The golf course is just over 7,000 yards from the back tees, equipped with holes that will please long hitters as well as shorter, trickier holes.

Course was in great shape
Fairways rough and tee boxes were in great shape. The greens were a little slow but overall they were good. Front nine pace of play was slow but we were able to go around slow group on 10th tee.
A good course with unfriendly staff.
I have been playing at this course for almost eight years, and while I love the actual course itself, I am always shocked at how rude the staff seem to be. When my group and I arrived, the man working in the club house tried to charge us a second time without even looking to see that the reservation had been made and paid for using Golfnow. When we told him that it had already been paid for he was very rude about it. On the fourth hole the weather sent us back to the club house due to heavy rain and lightning with no sign of it stopping anytime soon. When we tried to get a rain check for the 18 holes we paid for, the man working in the club house was rude to us again and refused to give us a rain check for more than 9 holes. While I love playing this course because of the challenges it offers, the habitual rudeness of the staff keeps me from frequenting this course.
Great potential, but not well-kept.
Played on 6/25/14 after seeing a fire deal for about $20 the night before.
The Good:
- Course layout is fun and challenging.
- A couple of the par 3's bring water into the shot (especially No. 17).
- A couple par 5's either require a draw off the tee for a long hitter, or a 3W so as not to hit through the dogleg.
The Bad:
- Most of the greens were diseased.
- They had recently mowed and their are dead piles of clippings all over.
- The bunkers looked like they may have been dragged on the weekend, but untouched since. Several of the bunkers had rocks in them. I got into one of them and after attempting to rake them away and get a decent lie without ruining a club, I decided to just hit from outside the bunker.
- The clubhouse randomly has hot dogs, but usually just a candy bar or chips. I had skipped lunch to play and was disappointed in my options.
- It just looks and feels like they're trying to get every penny out of it without doing the absolute minimum to keep it playable.
Overall:
Not a bad course in layout. I've played it before and will play it again while I still live here, but I would not pay full price. Even $30 is a little much.
Great Value
This Saturday afternoon was the first time I had played at Crickentree. Found it to be a very challenging golf course where accuracy and strategy is rewarded. I'm a 12-14 handicapper.
The condition of the greens was nothing to write home about. There were patches of damage on almost all of the greens. That said, it didn't really affect my round too much -- except for the 2nd par 5 on the front -- which seems to need a full rebuild. Though the greens weren't much too look at, they were receptive and rolled fast and true.
I'm new to the area and will be back. Peaceful, park-like setting where strong ballstriking is a must.
enjoyable round
the course was in fair condition, a few greens had areas that need repaired. fairways were the best part of the course made you shape some shots instead of just grabbing the driver and bombing away. met some very good people during the play.
Ignore Google reviews
Despite reading terrible reviews about this course on Google, I booked a tee time anyway, and am I so happy I did.
The course is in great shape, minus a few patches here and there, but definitely heading in the right direction.
As far as the staff, well I'm not sure if I've met a friendlier bunch in the year and a half I've been living in South Carolina.
I highly recommend you ignore the reviews on Google and go see for yourself.
Great find
My friend and I picked this course randomly because neither of us are from Columbia and wanted to try something new. We were not disappointed. The course was beautiful and just challenging enough to make it interesting. I can't wait to go back.
Great course
Difficult course; great design; well worth the time to play. Greens need a little more attention, fairway excellent but must keep it in the fairway. Will return.
Poor Condition
We saw only one employee the entire time. It was the guy who took the money. The greens were bad and bunker sand looked like ball park clay. The food selection was not very good and they do not sell beer. I was very disappointed in my golf course selection.
Nice setting
Was a very nice and challenging course, wish the grill would have been open but overall was great.
Loved the scenery!
Big Bang for the buck
Very challenging in that you have to shape ball both ways.....I got my butt kicked today lol....close to augusta too!
Greens a little beat up
Some of the greens had some damage to them, and the drainage on some holes left the course wet. Overall the course played well.
A little wet
We had had a few days of rains here in SC last week, but three days later, there was still a lot of muddy/soppy places on the course. The drainage seemed to be a bit sub-par.
Overall, the course was rather fun. A few challenging holes--especially with the placement of streams running throughout the course.
still one of the best layouts around
Great course. Still a wonderful view from every tee box. Hate that the grill is closed.
Not What You Think!!!!!
Course was in poor condition and was very swampy with extremely poor drainage. Pro Shop Staff was not friendly and the course staff was riding around in blue jeans. There are not restrooms on the course. The greens were dead and difficult to roll your ball. Very disappointing course.
Beautiful scenery on this golf course
This is a challenging golf course with plenty of lakes, bunkers, and hills. I enjoyed playing here. It was a damp cool day. I look forward to playing in warm weather on this course. The greens putt really good and there is green grass in the fairways. The scenery is beautiful. I will be back to play here again.
Nice Course
Have not played this course in years and it was just as I remembered it. Greens were excellent for this time of year. Was 1 over on my putting. Fairways were nice. Moderately challenging course. Very nice layout and well maintained.
The course was a challenging one but fair was with my brother in law he enjoyed himself as well
I will be back for another round, played here about 7 or 8 years ago before I moved and its the same course as then have to hit it straight.
Difficult but fair.
Tough course but fair. Greens held approach shots well and were tricky but moderate speed therefore playable. Well designed course cut through the Carolina pines, visually very appealing. In my opininion excellent value. Hope to get a chance to play it again someday.
