About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2018.
Originally opened in 1988 as a private club called Crickentree, the course changed its name and opened to public when it changed ownership in 1996. The golf course is known for its beautiful setting that has everything from meandering streams to towering hardwoods. There is also a scenic 17-acre lake that comes into play on a few holes. The risk-reward layout appeals to players of all skill levels. With good course management, the rewards are plenty, but it's not overly punishing for the high handicapper. The golf course is just over 7,000 yards from the back tees, equipped with holes that will please long hitters as well as shorter, trickier holes.

greens
the course has a nice layout but the greens are in bad shape but it was good for money
This course is in bad shape!
The conditions are bad! Greens are not keep up, weeds in the middle of some. Sand traps missing sand, not groomed. Overall not good!
Not worth the cheap price
I got an awesome price from GolfNow at $8 for 18 holes and a cart. Amazingly, it wasn't worth that price. Although the layout of the course is extremely difficult, the course is so poorly maintained that it is almost unplayable. The greens are just awful, the rough was very long, and there were large pockets of rock hard dirt on the edges of the fairways. The cart path is cracked and not usable most of the way. Although I paid for 18 holes, I left after the front 9. Unfortunately, it is time for this course to close up I believe.
Good course
Good course. Has some issues with the bare greens but good overall.
Faded star still shines
Previous reviews that criticize course conditioning are certainly accurate, so let's note some of the problems for the record. Greens are splotchy and are generally not cleared of grass clippings. The rough in some areas (adjacent to greens, say) is not routinely mowed and is weedy in places. Fairway grass cover is somewhat inconsistent, leaving some spots barren, pebbly and/or weedy. The bunkers are all now waste areas because of no maintenance , erosion and lost sand. Some stretches of cart paths are treacherous because of damage caused by tree roots. And tee boxes lack grass cover. In short, this star has noticeably faded. But for a lot of us, this is still a great course to play.
The architecture of the course is and always has been impressive. The holes aptly fit the landscape and are not artificially chiseled into the terrain. It is a scenic place with pleasant and strategic elevation changes, ponds and creeks, and beautiful hardwoods. When you stand on a tee box, the way the hole needs to be played becomes quickly apparent. The layout is indeed challenging, good (and even average) shots are rewarded, and only really bad shots are severely punished, which should be the case anyway. Houses adjoin some of the holes yet are situated well back of the course. The staff and crew are friendly and helpful. And the price is right.
Until two weeks ago, I had not played this course for fifteen years and I've since played it three times. I'll go back.
Extremely friendly Golf Pro, Great Layout, Poor Greens
I chatted with the head golf pro after the front 9. I had met another single golfer and his young son, decided to pair up. We went in to get a drink and a snack, that would be when we chatted about rain, conditions, layout, etc. the course had a nice build, but the greens are poorly maintained, with some sand patches and dirt patches. Overall, great experience, only complaint are the greens.
Bad choice
One of the worst courses I have ever played. Layout is nice but is in need of serious money for upkeep.
Greens were in poor shape on front nine
Golf Club of SC at Crickentree was what I expected except for the condition of the greens on the front nine. Weather conditions must have had an effect on the greens since they had very little grass and were packed mud in some cases. The rest of the course was okay and the layout is nice.
SAD DECLINE
This was a challenging and scenic course in the past. It is sad to see this course in such a state of decline due to so little play and maintenance. The annual membership costs are a steal at this point just to try and entice people to play the course. The greens were inconsistent with bare spots where the balls rolled as if on concrete, while the grass on the green was poorly cared for and the ball rolled very slowly. There were no real fringes on the greens as the weeds would slow your ball down. The roughs were no longer mown with weeds growing out of them at heights of 5-6 inches. It really disappointing to see what has happened to this course, and I feel for the homeowners who built around the perimeter of the course.
Needs Some TLC
The layout and surroundings of this course are beautiful. The course is old and everything from the grounds upkeep to the club house need work. The fairways were ok but the tee boxes and greens were in horrible condition and the cart paths were dangerous in some areas. We played this course 5-6 years ago and it was in competition shape. It is a shame that it has fallen on such hard times.
Showing Age
Course is nicely layed out and staff friendly enough. Years of aging and limited maintenance beginning to show. Fairways not awful but greens very sparse and inconsistent. Lot of bare spots and lumps of grass make putting very challenging. Could be wonderful with improved turf.
Sahara dessert greens
2nd time I played this course. 1st time was 14 months ago and there has been little to no improvement on the greens. It does have a challenging great layout.
Very Nice Course
The course is beautiful and challenging ! The staff is super friendly!
for the money its alright
I have seen 1st hand they are working to improve the over all condition of the course.
Wouldn't play this course again if it was free
We got worried when we had the only car in the lot that didn't belong to an employee and for good reason. Everything about the course from the fairways to the greens to the cart paths were in bad shape. It seemed like there was no work being put into the course at all.
Old Columbia area classic
Great layout. Course conditions are getting back to previous high standards. Well worth the trip.
Are you sure you were there. What I saw was a course that has been deprived of maintainence. Bare greens, weeds in the sparce fairways and poorly maintained rough. Tee boxes lack of grass and bunkers, well they used to be bunkers, guess you could call them hazards of some sort. Absolutely no value at all in this course.
