Northwoods Golf Course
About
Northwoods Golf Club is one of the Columbia area's premier public courses. P.B. Dye, son of renowned course architect Pete Dye, designed the layout, incorporating some of his father's signature features. The golf course is player friendly enough to appeal to any skill level but there are some challenges in store as well. Mature trees line most of the fairways and there are a few strategically placed bunkers that come into play. You won't come across much water on this golf course and it's not terribly long either. It's gentle enough for beginners to approach with confidence. The golf course's signature hole is the par-4 14th, which features the famous Dye railroad ties bordering a lake that hugs the bunkered green. Northwoods G.C. also offers a practice facility with a lighted driving range and putting green.

The Spur has a few spurs
My golf bud and I booked this course as we had a day trip to another function in the afternoon. We are from the Atlanta area, so needless to say we’re somewhat spoiled with the true variety that is available. First, the price point was overpriced - it is not a $50 course even on the weekend. The cart paths were tree-rooted (bumpy and broken) or non-existent. Fairways in many places were quite sparse - little to no grass in areas. The back nine greens (where we started) needed some work, bare in spots or sandy. I play a course at home that is in better shape, with much better greens and overall conditions and I only pay $30 on the weekends. I do get discount because of military status, but for $50, even on the weekend, Northwoods Spur should be in much better condition.

Great layout
First time playing here and really like the layout. Some holes really tough due to blind shots. But that makes it more fun. Not use to the brown grass though! Overall a challenging course and fun. Will be back
Best Course in Columbia SC
Best course in Columbia, best price in Columbia, best golf environment in Columbia, staff is very nice, you get treated like family.
No playing pressure - course a little beat up in spots
Had another great outing teeing off at noon on Thursday. Nobody ahead of me or behind me which is really a wonderful way to play! The course had some beat up areas and watery/muddy spots to work along with the sand traps being a bit heavy and wet. All in all though the fairways and greens were in good shape after several dry weeks (except one day from Hurricane Ian).
We played on Monday at 11 AM.
The trash receptacles on every hole were overflowing from the weekend.
There was No starter, no drinking water, no refreshments available on the course.
My 81 year old father drove off the cart path on a par 3 and that somehow got the attention of someone to drive out to us advising we need to show proof of handicap to drive off the poorly maintained cart path.
The course is nice, it just needs a manager…..
Hello. We appreciate you taking the time to leave us a review. We would love to know how we can earn those last two stars next time! Thanks for playing The Spur at Northwoods.
Course in good condition with the rain
Had a nice quiet outing where not a lot of people showed up in the morning due to rain predictions which never materialized. So I was able to get out earlier than my assigned tee time and play as a single with no pressure behing me and no one ahead of me. Course was in pretty good shape from all the rain we have had though some greens were a bit rough. All in all just had a quiet relaxing round working on my swing and dropping a few extra balls now and then when the swing did not feel right.
Terrible
I have played this course multiple times. The conditions are usually average, not bad but not great. Today was average. However, I have never experienced such bad customer service nor pace of play. We waited for two full groups to tee off after every shot. It took 3 hours to play 9 holes. At the turn, I politely asked if something was going on and if we could get a rain check for the back 9. The staff acted as if I was not there and could care less what anyone brought to their attention. For a course that is 10-15 minutes down the road from my home, it is a shame that I will never return.
We appreciate you taking the time to review the course and rate us. Your feedback helps us do better. Thank you for visiting Northwoods Golf Course. We hope you'll give us another try in the future.
Course in good condition given all the hot weather
Took a chance to play in 94 degree heat and turned out better than I thought. The course was in very good condition and the playing pressure was mostly light around the course. We let a couple of single players through as they caught up but passed by use (two some) quickly so we had little golfing pressure from behind and never had to wait to tee off on any of the holes.
Course soggy from rain but mostly in good shape
Had a good outing with little golf pressure. Maybe due to the rains over the weekend so yes the sand traps had water and there were muddy spots but all in all 80% of the course was in very good shape (thanks to the rain). Play was a bit slow due to a foursome ahead of me so I jumped a hole on the back nine and had nobody ahead or behind me the rest of the round.
Lot of potential
Greens and fairways were fantastic.
If the tee boxes were level and had grass the experience would have been a lot better. Fairways were good but the rough in a lot of cases was sand not long grass
Course staff was kind and layout was interesting.
Cart paths were horrible. Some of the worst I’ve experienced.
They seem to be doing a lot right and would like to play again in the future.
We appreciate you taking the time to review the course and rate us. We are going to pass on your feedback to the team. Thanks for visiting Northwoods Golf Course, and we hope to see you again in the future.
